I feel like its our brains consciously trying to undo assumed subconscious bias. I find myself telling myself to never pick the very first person, because clearly that's what I and other people would do more often due to our bias towards the first one. But it works against itself because no one EVER picks number one because they are all trying to make sure this bias does not happen.

In that first question my mind would also be into picking the one in the middle for some reason, when maybe its more important, when leaders stand in middle or the more talkactive people stand in middle, while the newer more quiet introvert members stand in the side listening, but I didnt know that in the weakest link was any bias, when in weakest link I would be into voting the person how got least money in the bank or who destroid the streak of right answers, when could have got a lot more in bank or, if it preatty equal. I just then vote the person who personality I dislike the most and who is most obnoxious, so I dont need to listen to that person more anymore, so I myself would not think I got bias in weakest link with choosing more in the corner, when the most obnoxious person can stand in the corner or in the middle.

Spatially, be in the middle. Sequentially, be anywhere but the middle. Your field of vision is strongest in the center, but your memory recall is best at the beginning and end of a sequence.

it is pretty much implied to us throughout our lives that whoever is in the middle will get the most attention. remember sitting in the corner/by the wall in math class so the teacher wouldnt call on you to answer a question? willingly sitting in the middle is a bolder choice because you put yourself in a position where eyes will be on you..and boldness/confidence can be a good quality :)

@CoralCopperHead

No, I remember the teachers favouring the kids that were closer to the walls and the corners while avoiding the kids in the middle. When I was going to school, being shunted off to the side made it almost _certain_ that you'd get called on at least once per class, if not more often than that. It was actually annoying, I ended up in the rear corner during eleventh-grade English and the class had a forced 'group reading' portion that took up about 1/8th of the class's time, the teacher kept calling on me to read aloud, then gave me shit for 'not paying attention.' The specific example I'm talking about was Hamlet. The class had just reached _Act 2._ I was reading at my own pace, and was at *_Act 3, Scene 2. And I was re-reading it because I'd already finished the damn script_*

I have actually observed the exact same thing while playing card games, and in fact I thus found a way to trick my opponent every time: When the opponent chooses one of your cards to discard at random, if you bring your cards closer to him while still holding them in one hand so he can pick one and expose the back of each of your card equally (ie to not make them think you're trying to hide one), they are less likely to choose the card that's on the edge and far less likely to choose the one on the edge that's away from them (ie the one closer to you, the one that you can see its entirety as you're holding it). Try it and see!

It's true as think of photographs. World leaders and company CEO's, etc, are always in the middle of the photograph, with their subordinates either side. For rock bands, the lead singer is always in the middle with the lead guitarist on one side and then the other band members are just subordinates.

Here's a question related to this topic, if we're the ones doing the choosing (say we're hiring someone or someone's auditioning, etc.), how do we avoid this bias so that we can instead focus on figuring out who's the most qualified? Is it as simple as just remembering that there is a bias and try to avoid making decisions based on it or is there another way around that problem?

Have a criteria of qualifiable factors or expected/desired inputs from the members of the meeting. But also try to take time to give extra consideration for those who raise points not in the criteria, as those points won’t already be mapped out and thoroughly considered as much as the criteria might be when it is being conceived.
@mrsfahrenheit
@mrsfahrenheit 4 жыл бұрын
I also noticed that in school but with a different background in mind. Because in school especially when you’re trying to make friends during classes (and even more especially when you don’t really know anyone yet/ try to create a stronger bond between a person you got to know already but want to know better/ you yourself are rather shy) you need know to ALWAYS try to sit in the middle of the row , not on the total edge of the table when you have no one sitting next to you on one side because you’ll see that it’s way easier to start a conversation when you find yourself sitting in the middle and people are also more likely to talk with you either. But If you sit on the edge of the table and you have no one to talk to on one side in the first place you’ll notice that your partner on your other side is more likely to talk with the one sitting on his other side and not you. Because naturally when he talks to the person on his other side he turns his back slightly towards you and mostly and not even on purpose remains in this position the whole time so you : 1. feel left out 2. and ,actually even tho the person doesn’t specifically intend to do that, are left out! 3. you also will have a hard time to even start a conversation and 4. it’s harder for the other people too to invite you in their conversation so .. ALWAYS try to sit in THE MIDDLE OF THE ROW IN SCHOOL and AVOiD THE EDGES of the table

When you sit on the middle, it gives you the center of attention, which makes you stand out. But this really depends on a persons mind, if that certain person observes and look at the big and small pictures, they might not choose you (hire etc). Therefore it also depends on skill.

It makes sense, in general. From our young days as kids, the "popular" kids in the group would generally be in the middle, while the less popular ones would be on the side. The popular kid would be surrounded by others exactly because they are popular, thus always having people left and right. On the other side, the kid that isn't popular wouldn't attract the same kind of attention, thus would most likely be on the outskirts. This idea happens very often as well. Even in war, the important units would be in the middle, flanked by the "cannon fodder" so to speak. An important asset is usually surrounded by other stuff to protect it. In this case, the guys in the middle or close to the middle are subconsciously meant to be important.

I own a fabric and a shops for furnitures. When I hire someone for the shop, I'm expecting easy talker- no "uhhh" and "umm's". My city hosts annual furniture expo, so being there atleast once, gives you the feeling of the different styles. If someone wants a work in the fabric, he/she must prove some knowledge for the position. I dont care if you came first of 5th or 20th.

This is actually true in most cases, with some with meetings too, sometimes our brain assumes if people are in the middle people want to be/don’t mind being next to the person more, making us think they are better to get along with

Me too. I chose him because he entered first. Unconciously, it seemed to me the guy with the most confidence, entering first in the room, whereas the last would probably be my last pick. It's normally best, in this situations, that you're the one that enters first, and do so without hesitation. If no other criteria is counted, it is confidence, and not your spacial position, what will make people more inclined to choose you.

I just found this funny.)

Well, I didn't think too much, he gave me 10 seconds to pick, I'm just refuting his thinking. Also, the guy in the furthest left is also the one that stands out the most, if you blurr your eyes, that one is bluer than the others.

I usually make a good impression at a meeting by doing my research, compiling all relevant information into easy to grasp slides, overlay that information with pie charts and line graphs where necessary, programming spreadsheet software to display embedded figures, designing decision trees, making compelling fact based arguments that drive on emotional appeal, speaking clearly, and dressing nicely. ....... but yea. You could also just sit in the middle. Let me know how that turns out.

Give people 4 options to vote for, all exactly the same, and the first option will ALWAYS win. Another one would be that you can vote for 2 different things, leaving a like if 1 and doing something much more complicated and difficult to count for 2, like commenting or using some emote. The likes will ALWAYS win because it's easier and faster to do. And every time the 1st option will be the more "popular" thing and the 2nd one will be more controversial or more disliked to ensure the wanted results. This example with 5 people I don't think is as reliable. But it's quite similar.
