That summer was a strange one. She didn't win a tournament for three months between the French open and US Open and often looked very out of sorts. She said years later that the war in Yugoslavia was really affecting her during that period. At this US Open she had a bad cold and never had to play her best tennis. She was slightly lucky in that all her main rivals, Graf, Navratilova, Sabatini and Capriati never really showed up, and Arantxa played a very poor match in the final. Seles was a great competitor. She didn’t have tantrums, didn’t bad mouth others, didn’t make excuses. Seles was direct and some don’t like candor. In terms of biggest “B”’s in tours how about all the top players who voted against Seles getting a protected ranking upon return to tour. Only Sabatini said yes give Seles protected ranking. Protected ranking like injury return to tour ranking that had time of injury. A stabbing on tournament court during a match most certainly was out of Seles control. Yet the selfish mindset of other top players voted no! That says much about their jealousy of Seles and fear of her game. That to me is a “B” characteristic, extreme selfish mindset.
@ralphbourgeois58755 жыл бұрын
Yes it makes sense to freeze her ranking when nobody knew if she would even return to tennis. What if she didnt, would Seles still be the #1 ranked today with her frozen ranking? Granted I know most Seles fans believe she would still be the dominant player today at age 47 if she were not stabbed or something, so maybe I am asking the wrong person that.

Monica had been in something of a slump coming into the US Open, not having won a tournament for three months since the French open in June. She'd had easy losses in that period to Graf and Navratilova where at times she didn't really look like she was there, and also lost her first match to ASV in Canada, looking very tired and frazzled during the match at times. At the US Open she'd been suffering from a bad cold and wasn't really at her best in this match. As for ASV, she played an awful match here. It was delayed because the men's semi final before had gone on for 5 hours, and ASV took a long time to wake up. Also, there had been controversy about how she should play this match - she actually had two coaches at the time and one wanted her to play attritional tennis, whereas the other wanted her to attack. She looked confused at times as a result. Also, ASV had just had her first win over Monica a few weeks earlier in Canada. On the one hand I think it raised the pressure on her to win again, and also made Monica more determined to get revenge.
@jansnauwaert17852 жыл бұрын
Wtf. I didn't even factcheck all you are saying here, but I know for sure that Monica was one of the best, if not the best, women's tennis has ever seen. The horrific stabbing almost put an end to her career and if it had not been for that awful event, Monica could have become the GOAT. Reading your comment, though, one would tend to believe she was almost average.
@zeddeka2 жыл бұрын
@@jansnauwaert1785 maybe fact check before commenting next time? Monica didn't win a tournament in 1992 for three months between the French open in June and the US Open in September. She had a very lopsided loss to Graf at Wimbledon (6-2, 6-1) then had another lopsided loss to Navratilova in Los Angeles (6-4, 6-2) - that match is on KZbin and she played awfully. She said after the match that her game just wasn't there. She then followed that up losing to Arantxa for the first time at the Canadian Open. That match is also on KZbin and she looks tired and somewhat underweight. Monica said years later that the war in Yugoslavia was badly affecting her during that period. I'm curious as to why you think stating facts about what happened is somehow "making Monica sound average" ? She is clearly a great player. If anything, the fact that she could come back from that poor form, and have a heavy cold at the US Open, and still win, is a testament to her. Reality isn't an attack. Ralph Bourgeois yeah she was more aggressive than usual which i feel was not working. It's sort of like the other us open final where she played graf. In that match, she lost the first set 6-1 trying to blast graf, but won the next 2 when she took pace off. That said, I'm not sure it would've worked agst such a prime form Seles, but well worth a try.

True about the 94 final but Graf's back went out bigtime in the 2nd set (she was even stretching her back squatting on the ground numerous times in the 2nd and 3rd set) which really helped Sanchez come back too.

Yes she was a bit more agressive than usual and able to execute that day, unlike in this match, but as you said Seles was not the same player at that point. This match she tried to go overboard and hit her forehand regularly in a way she isnt capable of hitting it, and made a ton of errors.

An awful lot going on in this match. On Monica's side, she had been going through a dry patch and hadn't won a tournament in about 14 weeks or so, since the french open. During that time she had some strange losses to Graf at Wimbledon and Navratilova in Los Angeles (she said after that match that her game "just wasn't there"). She'd also had her first ever loss to Arantxa a few weeks earlier at the Canadian Open. Monica took 6 weeks off after wimbledon and looked tired and somewhat underweight in los Angeles and Montreal. She'd also picked up a nasty cold during this US Open. On Arantxa's side, she actually had two coaches at the time and they disagreed on how she should play this match. The legendary Australian Mervyn Rose who was one of her coaches thought she should attack. Her other coach thought she should try and wear Monica down. In any event, Arantxa played a nervous, confused match. The appalling US Open super Saturday scheduling didn't help either. These two players had to wait for the 5 hour men's semi final between Chang and Edberg to end. Monica handled it much better and Arantxa looked like she was half asleep at the start. The 1992 US Open was probably one of the most disappointing of the 90s. Graf looked like she didn't want to be there. Navratilova lost very early. Sabatini had taken a sabatical since Wimbledon and also looked like she didn't want to be there. Capriati, fresh from her olympic gold, also had a shock early loss.

@@TjordfulI think a mixture of things. The court was a lot slower at the Canadian Open for one. I think Arantxa felt a lot more pressure here given that she'd just got her first win over Monica a few weeks before, and the confusion with her coaches didn't help. It'd be interesting to know what these two felt about the very long delay they had because of the hyper long men's semi final beforehand that delayed this match. I think this match can be viewed as a step in Arantxa's development. She still wasn't the skilled, thinking match player that she would become in later years. I think the Arantxa of 1994 and later would have played this match a lot better.

It was idiotic of the other coach to suggest that Arantxa should wear Monica down with her defense. Arantxa played her best matches against Monica when she was aggressive and used her own power and angles. She really must have been. She made tons of very easy errors. I don’t know if I ever saw her hit 15 errors in 5 games. The match total must have been well into the 30’s if not 40’s. It was a poor final.

If anyone lost to sanchez vicario it's simply because they didn't play their best

Yeah so all 759 wins were because the other player under performed . She made 31 grand slam finals because she was a crap tennis player . Reached number 1 because every other player played badly . Won 4 Olympic medals because everyone else played badly . Made 13 QF appearances or better at the French open . But that’s because all other players had a shit day . Oh made 35 grand slams QF or better appearances, but yes very one had a bad day since 1987. Tidally agree with you . You are a very knowledgeable tennis fan . Well done you

@@CJJAK37 You are taking this literally. You have to consider Seles and Graf. Women’s tennis in those days was mostly crap. What he means is that if Seles or Graf has lost to Sanchez, then they must have played badly. That is actually a truth.
@CJJAK374 жыл бұрын
@@vcetaditya you said anyone that lost . Anyone does not mean Seles or Graf . Yes those two were superior in every way . Totally agree with that . But she still had her wins over them in slam finals. No one else beat both in a major final

It’s so true. This was such a flat match in all regards. It’s like no one even cared when it ended. Such a weird atmosphere and you can’t blame the crowd. The ny fans are the most lively crowd anywhere in the world. I think it was clear Monica was winning this match and for some reason, Arantxa made so many errors that it took away from the fun of it.

Pasquale Ferraro you watch much tennis come on man Monica kicks ass back then if only she didn't get stabbed in the back!!!!😞

I found it exciting, Monica was amazing prior to the stabbing. She was relentless, a “take no prisoners” approach, afterward she seemed timid. What a shame.
