No chapter breaks?? Holy cow. Also, I hated Cursed Child. There are a bunch of videos already out on YT that I think really hit the nail on the head, but there were just so many things wrong with it. As for what you said about characterization, I understand that in the brevity of a play script, some of a character's dimension will be lost. But the degree to which these guys were out of character was just unforgivable if you ask me. Even characters as minor as Moaning Myrtle were just acting like completely different people. It made no sense, and my only conclusion is that Jack Thorne must have little to no understanding of the HP universe.

And you're are right, it is a matter of opinion. That's great that you were able to overlook all of its plot holes and flaws, but unfortunately I was not. Also, I never said that she was George Lucas. She obviously doesn't need the money, but I cannot understand her motivation to releasing a story riddled with inconsistencies when she is well known for he well thought out plots. For me, the story contradicts everything that she worked so hard to write.

Gotta side with The Astonishing Ashley on this one. It may be a matter of opinion but I can hardly even imagine being able to look over the plot holes, inaccurate characters, and overall cheesiness of the play. JKR may have been credited with writing the original story, but I honestly don't believe she had all that much to do with it. I have a feeling she participated at a bare minimum, just so the franchise would be allowed to stamp her name on the cover. She said even before the publication of Deathly Hallows that she would never write another Harry Potter book again after book 7, and I believe she said that with conviction. I truly believe she had no intention of continuing on with the franchise after DH. But now that so many big companies have stakes in HP, do you really think they're going to let the cash cow die? While I wouldn't necessarily call JKR a sellout, I do think the comparison to George Lucas is justified, since they have both allowed their creations (and themselves) to be exploited by big business. Warner Bros literally gave JKR no choice with the Fantastic Beasts movie; they basically said "we're going to make this, and you can either be a part of it or not," so she decided to write the script. But they were going to make the movie with or without her assistance. I think that pretty much sums up the authenticity of all the extra material that's being released.

About the Cursed Child. I liked it. i didn't love it, but I had fun reading it. It reminded me of the Starkid musicals from the beginning so I decided to think of it as a starkid parody/fanfic. I think if you just don't ask why and how, you will enjoy it.

The Cursed Child is filled with so many plot holes as well as a weak plot. I couldn't stand reading it and a lot of the stuff that happens is so out there that it's ridiculous. I agree that Scorpius is a great character, and sometimes Albus. I would actually love to see the play though.

I really loved The Heart of Betrayal! It's so good, and I definitely like all the twists and turns it takes. And The Queen's Poisoner looks fabulous and sounds like one heck of a story!

The Queen's Poisoner sounds SO GOOD! And I actually just yelled "DAYUMMM" out loud when you took that dust jacket off of it. IT'S PERFECT. I really like how the second book will take place when the character is 20 also! and I completely agree with you on the Heart of Betrayal! Lia is one of my all time favorite characters and that series is just so much more complex than I ever imagined it would be!

I personally liked the Cursed Child, but I get that everyone has their own opinions and ways they see books. I just read the book/play and appreciated what I got. In all truth, I was so busy thinking about the characters and how they could fix their lives that i didn't spot a plot hole. Then again, I usually don't see plot holes. Oops. :P

Definitely agree with you about the Cursed Child. I also went into it not expecting it to be "the 8th Harry Potter book", since I knew it was a play and that it would have a different feel to it. But oh man, the plot holes! Particularly the fact that all the previous time travel rules were just completely ignored. I also felt like the big reveal in the end (where you find out the parentage of a certain character) was completely unrealistic (honestly the reveal felt like something a bad fanfiction writer would have come up with).

I liked the cursed child as fanfiction of the goblet of fire, I just see that that's what it is. I was disappointed, gave it 3 stars. Scorpious was my fav character, I feel that the book/script did a LOT for the Malfoy family.

I've been thinking about the Cursed Child, and one of my main problems with the characters is that their dialogue was written in a way that made me read it in an American accent, whereas in HP all the characters, Ron especially, talk in such a stereotypically English way that the change just really threw me off.

Everyone keeps talking about the 'plot holes' but what people need to realize is that the entirety of the book deals with time travel and time change, so obviously things get muddled. I personally didn't ever find that CC caused any plot holes for the main series. And I did see the stage production so I definitely agree that seeing it preformed brings a lot more clarity than just reading the script.

I love HP and the Cursed Child and I'm dreaming of seeing it on stage! Hunting for the tickets now. :) I do agree that characters were a bit "empty", I don't know, and I feel like it's because of the format, but still to me it was like meeting my old friends and at some points I had goosebumps when certain characters appeared or events took place. So, yeah, I just loved it and was sad it was so tiny and ended so fast. I actually hope one day JKR would write proper huge novels about other magical schools. That'd be awesome :)

I finally read the first instalment of the Percy Jackson books for the first time, I thought I wasn't going to like them as I'm now 23 and thought that they might be a little young or immature being middle grade fiction but I absolutely loved them, can't wait to read more of the series!

I am so glad to hear I'm not the only person who had mixed feelings regarding Every Heart a Doorway. I read this a couple weeks ago after hearing it hyped by several people and felt pretty much the same as you. I wanted to learn more about the worlds they visited and could have done without the entire murder subplot. I was really intrigued by the concept, but was disappointed with the execution. At this point, I don't know if I'll even bother with the follow ups.

I was really disappointed with Cursed Child. I know EVERYONE is saying the plot was like fanfic, but it's true! Best book I read this month was definitely The Fireman by Joe Hill. Just such a compelling and original take on the whole apocalypse/epidemic/dystopia-type story. The main character is so believable and yet so different to your usual jaded apocalyptic hero. I loved her so much. Second favourite was probably Dictator by Robert Harris - excellent conclusion to a brilliant trilogy.

Since I mostly read the whole of the Throne of Glass series the month of August, I'd say Crown of Midnight was my favorite book that I read. COM was closely followed by The Wrath and the Dawn/Queen of Shadows.

I agree that Cursed Child isn't the greatest of stories, but as a play and a production on a stage it is truly phenomenal. I'm so glad I got to see it - I actually did a review on my channel as well, but I think half of it is gushing about how amazing the production was... I'll probably read the script sometime within the next few months so, who knows, my opinion might change after that :) Will definitely have to pick up The Kiss of Deception at some point!

Favourite read of the month would have to be the All For The Game Trilogy. It just sort of blew my mind. But as someone who liked Cursed Child I can see where the issues come from. My personal perspective is that knowing the plot before you go in actually makes it more enjoyable. My friend had seen it and told me all the strange things that happen so I was prepared for that. So I just got enjoy the characters and the plot for what it was. There was no surprises just me having to take it all in my stride. But yeah I kinda ended up loving it....

I had similar feelings about The Cursed Child. The plot holes were frustrating. I also had a lot of problems with the characters. I was expecting some changes since it is 19 years later; however, I sometimes felt that they were unrecognizable. That was really heartbreaking since I grew up with these characters. It is taking me forever to write up my review on it because of how torn I feel. I loved seeing the world again and it was super nostalgic but and the same time I hated how many times I had to put it down because of confusion/wtf moments. Love your videos. Thanks to you my last book haul was nothing but fat, floppy fantasy books. Can't wait to read them all and watch all your spoiler reviews!

I just finished reading The Nightingale and thank you for making me discovering it!! I'm such a mess right now because of all the emotion but it was so so good. I'm always a sucker for WW2 historical fiction, it's so damn good and interesting. Plus I'm french and I weirdly never read about WW2 in France so it was about time. And also I read ACOMAF which was amazing as everybody said :)

I finally started the Throne of Glass series this month, so it was easily my favourite read of the month. As for Cursed Child, I adored being back in the Harry Potter world so much I almost managed to ignore the plot holes. I never got the whole release day experience for any of the other books (I actually finished reading HBP for the first time the day DH was released), so that was really exciting for me. The more I think about the plot itself, the more it annoys me, so I'm just focusing on the world and the experience of reading it again.

I'm sorry you didn't like Cursed Child. I really enjoyed it. While I did have a few issues with plot, I actually didn't find the characters' behavior that unbelievable. I've always been bothered by Harry's meanness & felt sympathy for Draco's hidden goodness, so to see those characteristics brought forward more in this story really worked for me. It felt like a character study in a way & I thoroughly appreciated the way that plot & characterization had developed over time.

I tried imagining it watching it on stage and I really want to watch the play now. I hope I get the chance to. It's top priority. And I still don't understand why Albus was even considered to be sorted into Slytherin. It makes no sense.This month I read the seven realms series and I loved it so much!! It's definitely one of my favorite fantasy series now.

I liked The Cursed Child. I went in with an open mind about it and I think that was important. I think a lot of folks went into it with a lot of skepticism and then ended up hating it. Yes, it had plot holes galore and read like a fan fic. I think if they were going to call it "the eighth story" then it should have been fleshed out as a novel...and bring in our other favorites....where were Hagrid and Neville!? Things I did like--the friendship aspect felt true to the original books and it was nice to see a realistic depiction of Harry as a dad. He's not perfect, never was, and he struggles to understand teenagers just as much as every other parent. All in all, it was ok.

These books are huge if you haven't noticed. And how do you know that I'm not rich? I love your videos! They gave me so much inspiration on reading. Really have to read Kiss of Deception. I already bought it. I have two favorite books I read this month out of 6. First one would be Reverie by Lauren E. Rico I actually got a free copy of that in exchange for an honest review. Starting the second part of it this weekend. My second so far favourite and I am not completely through it yet would be Ice Like Fire by Sara Raasch well or maybe Fall of Giants by Ken Follett...can't decide yet between those two. Definetly like both of them. Looking forward to see what you are reading next month 😉

I have so many mixed feelings about the Cursed Child... I think the only way you can enjoy it is to consider it as a side story and not the 8th book, otherwise you'll inevitably going to be disappointed... To me the ending of Deathly Hallows was perfect, I think the loose ends kept the story alive. And I agree with you, so many plot holes. But I also think many of the issues can be resolved by seeing the play. I just feel like it's a bit unfair for people who won't be able to see it

for the cursed child-- I loved being back in the wizarding world. I think that's what a good portion of my rating was based off of. But the plot was so shaky and thin and I hated the "plot twist" because it made literally no sense.

Rowling) 3/5 stars It Ends With Us (Colleen Hoover) 5/5 stars The Assassin's Blade (Sarah J. Maas) 5/5 stars A Monster Calls (Patrick Ness) 5/5 stars The Elite (Kiera Cass) 2/5 stars Least favorite book I read this month was The Elite (obviously). Favorite is definitely It Ends With Us, but the close runner up is The Assassin's Blade. I keep thinking about this book and it's tugging at my heart strings, I just can't. Sarah J. Maas' books are like crack, I just can't get enough. I need to fulfill my Sarah J. Maas fix. (Which I am currently reading Crown of Midnight and loving it so far)

I just read Every Heart A Doorway. And I enjoyed reading it. The next book is about the twins and when they were in their world. I enjoyed reading The Cursed Child. I liked how things played out and I liked the story line. I agree with you that maybe if people could see the play itself that it would come across better. I really enjoyed the cursed child. But I understand why people are a bit put off by it. I just don't understand why people won't read it because it's in a play format. In the bookstore I work at we've had people return it because they didn't realize and they sometimes ask if we have the novel in stock and we have to convince them that it doesn't exist.

I haven't read the Cursed Child, nor do I really have any desire to at this point, but there was something bothering me about how some people were trying to put you on blast the last time you talked about it since you were being, rightfully, critical. While I know plays can typically be very different from novels in how they handle characters (I started reading plays and scripts way before I really got into reading novels), I feel like people arguing that it's okay for a play to have bad characterization just because it's in script format is lazy. Like, yeah, a lot of performances have actors and actresses who added their own flair and element to a character, sure, and that's something you look at when critiquing a performance. But when critiquing the writing itself, if there's little to no character there, that is bad writing. There are a plethora of scripts out there that I have read and loved that were packed with characterization, it was just done much differently obviously than how novels handle it. I dunno, I just personally feel that the idea that you can't critique a script because it isn't being performed is asinine. Unless the writer is purposely doing it to leave it up to the performers to choose how they want to portray their characters, I'd consider that poor writing. Just because an actor takes a poorly written character and performs it well and gives them something that wasn't there in the writing doesn't make the writing good - it makes the performance good, which is entirely separate from the critiquing scripts, in my opinion.

My favourite book I read this week was either The Winners Kiss or In Order to Live. I enjoyed The Cursed Child well enough, but when you lump it with the rest of the series it's so underwhelming. I mean I think it will be amazing on-stage, and maybe the actors will be able to show something that I didn't see on the page. I was hoping for something different, whereas this felt like a not-as-good version of what's already been done. I didn't hate it, but it didn't grip me and I did have problems with it. I think the only thing I've seen everyone agree on is Scorpius, and even people who hated it liked him.

I mostly read books you've touched on previously which includes: White Cat by Holly Black, Legend by Marie Lu, Firefight by Brandon Sanderson, and in the process of Watchmaker on Filigree Street. One series I like but you have not mentioned is Maximum Ride by James Patterson.

White Cat is a great book. White Cat has a lot of twists and turns and very suspenseful. There is a magic system in play called curse working where one touch can give either side of luck, cause dreams, give love, change memory, and various other effects that's illegal. There are some odd notes in Castle Sharp's life which lead him on an adventure and discovery of the truth. I don't want to spoil it, but it is amazing book as long as you don't mind suspense, intrigue, a surprise around every corner, and a book you don't want to put down to discover what in the book's world will happen next. I loved it! I will be reading the next book in the series soon.

I didn't hate or loved the cursed child, I feel like some of the plot was off to me, I want to say everything turned out to perfect to actually happen. I think if play was a little longer it would be really easy to fix the plot holes. Or if the Delphi situation didn't happen at the end and they fixed the plot holes in the beginning. Also only some of the characters were off to me (mostly Harry and Ginny), Harry was just a terrible dad and Ginny was like movie Ginny. However I really liked moganogal, hermione, and sorpious. Overall I enjoyed it, but it still wasn't the best.

I hated The Cursed Child. It had nothing to do with the format of the story. Most of Shakespeare plays I read, and haven't seen on stage, yet the characters felt real to me. With The Cursed Child, they were so out of character to begin with, that it felt like reading a bad fanfiction. And don't get me started on the story line. I can't believe someone who wrote such complex stories and back stories for the Harry Potter universe would come up and approve all those ridiculous cliches present in The Cursed Child. Honestly, I want to forget I've ever read it, forget it exists and move on. I will always love Harry Potter but this is NOT the 8th story. Not in my opinion.
