This is the video I needed! I think you hit the nail on the head for my problem with romantasy as well. I love the more finely woven historical esque romances as opposed to just modern tropes in a fantasy setting. Definitely checking this author out!

I love Grace Draven's work! She does a fantastic job of writing healthy, yet still compelling, romances. So much romance out there is filled with toxicity wrapped up in, "but he's a hot bad boy" excuses. Grace really shows how you can still have an intriguing romance without the love interest being awful.

I canNOT tell you how excited I was when I heard Grace Draven……she is phenomenal! Wraith Kings series is a must…..3 novels, 4 novellas…….and the novellas are better than the novels!! Also, side note, Grace Draven announced last year she was diagnosed with cervical cancer and haven’t heard anything since…..send prayers and well wishes for her please. 💚💚

Omg Grace Draven!! I read Radiance and liked it so much! It definitely has the same “falling for each other purely out of mutual respect” vibe because it’s the entire point! The MCs are from two different fantasy races and have very different beauty standards so they start out repulsed by each other. For some odd reason *cough*moodreading*cough* I never got to the rest of the books! I don’t hate a lot of the standard romantasy but I never find it believable and have a similar need for a romantasy like this so I will absolutely be picking up more Grace Draven books

I love Grace Draven, her writing is so beautiful and her stories so good. My favorite is her Wraith Kings series, book one is Radiance, it is a true friends to lovers i hope you give it a go, its a really really good story.

Considering what you like, I recommend Vela Roth's Blood Grace series. Cinnamon roll male, very political, beautiful writing, and dreamy romance.

I love fantasy, I love romance, but I've been avoiding romantacy because most of the books that I've read in that genre don't deliver on either front (weak world building and instalove). The way you talked about this series has convinced me of giving it a chance! It sounds like it has a good balance of both aspects

I am not a big romantasy girlie, BUT Daughter of the Moon Goddess (Celestial Kingdom duology) was wonderful. Our MC wants to grow as a person and get close with her family. The romance/relationship {love triangle} is in the background or off to the side. Book 2 the love triangle takes a little bit more focus but still 2nd to MC's personal goals. also the books are just pretty💖

Have you read Sharon Shinn’s books? I just read her Twelve Houses books, starting with Mystic and Rider, and they are the perfect slow burn, found family, historical romanctasies. Highly recommend.

I love this concept!! Makes me wonder if I should give Grace Draven a second chance. I'm in the minority of not having loved Radiance, only gave it 2 stars, and I think it had a lot to do with the way it was sold to me and it not living up to that expectation. (Do not read on if you don't want to know!) . . . . . . One of the biggest selling points of this book and what I saw it praised to the skies to in reviews was the fact that there was no insta-love between the two main characters. They are of different species, each finding the other horribly unattractive. But from the minute the two meet there still is an insta-connection and they are very affectionate with each other. They cannot miss each other and cannot refrain from constantly touching each other. Yet every three or four sentences there is an allusion to how ugly one person finds the other, so that we should not forget that they ABSOLUTELY DO NOT find each other attractive. I never really felt the tension or transformation of how a so called ugly person suddenly becomes beautiful due to growing feelings... Ultimately, this is not a bad book. It is well written and I read it really quickly, but a combination of not getting what I had hoped for and not feeling invested in the characters or the story, resulted in me feeling some resentment towards this book, which has spread to not reading anything further from this author...

Please read “The Tea Rose” by Jennifer Donnelly! It is a chunkier book that is a part of a trilogy, but has the historical romance vibes, mystery, and just so much more.

There is something just so addicting when you find the right cocktail of believable fantasy and romance! Like the YEARNING is so so important to me, and I won't lie, the most popular 'romantasy' at the moment just doesn't deliver this. I wanna be kicking my feet and blushing y'know? You should check out the book, Zelda caught in thorns. It's about a princess of a galaxy called Zelda who goes on an intergalactic vacation and finds herself falling in love with a prince of another galaxy called The Thorn, and gets taken hostage by the people of that galaxy, who want to exchange her for one of their galactican who is imprisoned in her galaxy. A space romance.

I’ve read Radiance and really liked it, then entreat me, which was less good in my opinion, but overall I like Grace’s books. I’m currently reading Emily Wilde’s Encyclopaedia of Fairies and I’m loving it, I’d say it’s more fantasy than romance though.

I am discovering that I’m down for any tropes in fantasy romance it just has to have good writing and mature themes. I have been disappointed so many times by overhyped fantasy books and I try them and they are just poorly written and cringey! Grace Draven is so underrated!

You talking about why you love historical romances more totally made me realize why I have the opposite taste. I got a lot of that fun religious trauma and shame so reading about propriety and chasteness is not it for me. I’m like, give me a fantasy world where we don’t glorify purity, and where no one bats an eye at your orientation. Idk. I think its cool that you are kinda deep diving on what types of stories you like best. It can teach us a lot about ourselves.

Super valid! I would say this series does not center purity and all characters have had previous relationships and life experience etc etc (and in general I’m not a fan of that either!) but I do love manners lololol and flowery language (a guy who writes a poem I won’t lie)! I hope later books center more queer characters because I’m right there with you!
