This is a teaching session on Pes Planus, or flat foot. The session is being moderated by Firas Arnaout and Shwan Henari from the FRCS Mentor Group, and Ruth Head from Orthopedic Research UK. The speaker is Sunil Bajaj, a consultant pediatric orthopedic surgeon at Lewisham and Greenwich NHS Trust. The session covers pediatric, adolescent, and adult flat foot deformities, including flexible and fixed flat feet. The Spring Ligament is highlighted as an important structure for the management of flat foot. The angles to be considered when handling flat foot include the talus first metatarsal angle and the tailor-navicular coverage angle. The arch can take up to ten years to develop in the first decade. The session includes a lecture presentation, MCQ questions, tips for the FRCs exam, and a hot seat Viva practice. The session will be recorded and posted online.

During video time 7.53 You say during heel strike subtalar joint is in valgus. Valgus position of subtalar joint unlock the forefoot so as to absorb shock. Please explain this a little more clearly. Also please tell us what is the role of tibialis posterior in subtalar heel valgus and forefoot unlocking?

The TN and CC joints are parallel during heel strike making the foot supple. Due to the contraction of tib post foot supinate and the axis of the two joints become convergent locking the foot for a push off.
