Yeah I always try make sure my bills are the first things paid out of my paycheck as direct debits or standing orders. First one being my rent on the 1st of the month. Then it's easier to budget when the important things have already been paid. And I feel bad if I don't do my dishes right away or miss a few crumbs - but that's sometimes one of those things of working full time, sometimes I just forget in the morning and I will clean it when I get home

Worked in housing in a deprived area of the north west back in the early 90's. I lasted 9-months. Most traumatic year of my life, the things I dealt with, saw & smelled, I will never forget. These agents & inspectors really have their work cut-out (I just wasn't strong enough!) & I feel for many of the tenants too, who often have many social factors working against them, sometimes not always of their own fault/making.. The poverty struggle is real.

I so emphasize w/the woman w/the bed bugs. We let an old friend stay with us because he was homeless. And he gave us bedbugs. It took months and months and months to get rid of them. I lost my favorite couch and my bed. I would be sitting on that couch & they would just crawl over my shoulder and down the front of me. I would find them on my bed quilt. We finally got rid of them. Now I have a terrible phobia of spiders. And one day I went into the bathroom and I saw a little black thing on the wall & I thought. Oh no, I thought we got rid of them. And then I got close & said words I have never uttered before or since - Thank God it’s a spider. That’s how terrible bed bugs are.

Bedbugs are the f***ing worst! My brother brought them from a holiday in Greece. We didn't catch them until the colony got so big they started coming to my room and eating me alive. I was literally tearing chunks of skin because the itch was so bad and the only thing that took the edge off was calamine lotion. It took months and thousands of pounds to get rid of the infestation. We had to hoover books, wash everything at 60, replace matrasses and for years I kept industrial strength bug spray around, just in case there was even one that survived. Even now I get so nervous when travelling and if I see even a small bit of black fluff on white sheets I panic until I can clarify it's not a bug. You never fully get over a bed bug infestation.

Sorry to hear that. My Friend got an eviction notice this week because he was always late with rent. He spends more than he makes and he got away with not keeping his financial obligations in the past. I helped him but the Bailiff was one step away from evicting him and throwing his stuff in the street. He couldn't thank me enough, he knew he would have been homeless were it not for me. He'd also have nobody to take him in. I am going to help him with his fiannces and a budget because he knows how hard he has to work to keep a roof above his head.

I rent out two properties and I have to pass all inspections to be able to rent it out… how can these landlords rent a house out for almost £1000 per month, with rats, mice, bed bugs, no smoke alarms working, damp and so on? I have to get a certificate of habitation from my local council and if I don’t meet the requirement I can’t rent it! I have to carry full insurance on the properties, the boilers and electrics maintained yearly with certification and damp inspections every two years. What a disgrace that this house can be rented out like it is! If my council inspector saw this they’d condemn my landlord certificate and my agent would ditch me and I’m going to say it, to many foreign landlords are operating against the law without consequences!

I like in govt housing and have a neighbor who is a cat "rescuer. Some she has fixed and let's go but the last count I heard was 30, that are being kept. And the worse is it 2 adults 1 who is disabled and the only income is the disability check. So it's horrendous with the look and smell!! And they were reported but nothing done, for nearly 3 yrs!

We're lucky enough to own our home outright. However, we did rent property when we were newlyweds. My mum always told me to "always keep the roof over your heads". Pay the rent , or mortgage, first!! She'd say that we could always eat eggs/ beans/ bacon, (whatever) on Toast, if things were tight, financially. She was right! It's so important to learn to prioritise, financially. On the other side of the coin, I'd NEVER rent a property out. I'm just not the trusting type..

Should be something that should be done. Granted that some may fall on hard times eg loose job and on benefits which can take time to “kick in”. Here in Australia, the agents do a house inspection every 3 months. I'm sure they see a lot of filth but the majority of us have to keep the house in tip-top condition. I don't understand how people create so much filth, not to mention living in it

But there also has to be a point where if they’ve done a few inspections, the tenant is an excellent tenant, keeps the property like it’s their own, pays the rent without issue, informs the landlord/agency of any issues promptly that these inspections are not warranted. As a tenant myself it is incredibly invasive and degrading that someone has the right to come in and inspect your home as if you’re under suspicion all the time. It cannot be a one size fits all situation

Am grateful as I pay $600 for 3 bed 2 bath 2 living areas 2 decks. Water included. My electric is $150 average a month. Winter I pay $140 for propane for 6 months contract. I live rural.

Times are quite different now. Most middle class people cannot and will not afford a home ever. This economy is SCREWED. I have friend working 3 jobs just to barely afford food and rent in a tiny place. Life isn’t the 60s anymore. Purchasing power is GONE for the average person. Inflation out of control, rents, gas, groceries, so expensive that we now have a class of people called the working poor. There’s seriously something wrong with this economy, where a working person cannot afford a roof over their head. In the past, it used to be that you had to be a drug addict or alcoholic or mental illness or whatever. No, they cant. In Australia, if the real estate/owner gives notice of entry (usually 2 weeks), they are allowed to enter, wether your home or not. Its part of the lease. And why not allow entry? What are peole hiding?

People need homes to live in. Its not "dead money" if your paying for a roof over your head. Cant afford to buy, what are you supposed to do? My Mum and i and my 2 daughters live together as we couldnt afford to rent on our own. We each pay 50/50 rent and electricity, and i buy the groceries. Sweet deal for you to be able to rely on your Mum and Dad to live. You pay groceries? Thats it?! Thats shameful.
