Hi, red mites are the most common mites found on pet birds. In this video I talk about different types of mites and how to get rid of them. Do not use the 8 in 1 bird protector that hangs on the cage as it's very toxic to birds.

Great video, very informative. I'm going to give my 2 budgie cages a thorough cleaning; daily paper changes and wash down more often, like every 2 weeks instead of monthly. The days of taking my 4 budgies out to the lanai (enclosed, screened-in porch) have been over since a red tailed hawk started hanging out, but when I did take them outside, I would place their cages on a picnic table and while sitting in a chair with them, I would notice bugs crawling around on the table; I would occasionally get a bug bite as well. Glad to hear that you found the mites to be the source of Kingsley's problem.

One of my budgies got some sort of mites last year right after I moved into a new apartment, I felt so bad for him!! Luckily I track my bird's molts very carefully so from the first day that he started to drop feathers, I immediately called my avian vet because I knew it wasn't a normal molt, I got an appointment within days. He ended up with a few little bald spots on his head. He had two shots, two weeks apart, I replaced all the perches and toys and did some thorough cage cleaning and he recovered fully with no issues since.

Yeah don’t, wild birds and nests is where they come from. I dealt with the issue and very hard to get rid of. I purchased my birds and I think they had them, but only a few. Can only tell and see them when there’s an infestation. Happens to every bird owner, I wasn’t even aware they existed until seeing it, takes a month to get rid of.

One way to efficiently kill mites on things like rope perches and nets would be to put in the dryer on high for an hour.-- Without the need to wash in water first. This should kill the mites and the eggs if the setting is hot. perches can be soaked in dishwater and then dried in the oven.

I know this is an old video. I'm not sure if this would help. But in warmer weather, I put my birds in an extra clean cage, and take their main cage , and toys, outside and steam clean everything with my steam cleaner. I have the steamfast floor cleaner, but it has attachments to hand hold and steam just about anything. This might kill mites that are hiding.

Thanks 😊 again.

Oh my gosh.. glad somebody finally made a video about mites! I don't have birds , i have to cats. The neighborhood in live in has chickens. Plus the many wild birds out there. 2019 i had an infestation of mites. I knew it,but could not prove it. My cats and i felt extremy itchy . So uncomfortable!. Nobody i knew believed me. The pest control i had come out didnt either. I seemed crazy. But my cats wouldnt come in the house , even to eat and thats when i found i couldnt lay in my bed or sit on the couch .. without feeling worse. I could not see them , but felt them everywhere on me! So even tho pest control came out and sprayed, because they didnt believe me, they didnt kill them. They need the right type of chemical to kill mites. It was awful. It was 2 1/2 years later when i finally got pictures of them in my house. There were mostly in the cats beds . But even tho i show them the pictures, they are not treating my yard and house for them properly. With all the chickens around, and some would come to my house because their coop was need of repair. The most horrific experience ever. I tried to get the local news to do a story but it hasn't happened yet. I am so glad you did this video. I wouldn't wish this on anybody , it has been so hard to take care of. This will help many people who do not know

I'd be inclined to just put a bare minimum in the cage; one perch, food, water for a couple of weeks. Much easier cleaning. I wonder how long they live without feeding - after a few weeks of that, moving out the birds and clean stuff, so any mites hiding in the room die off. With all those birds and lovely cages I can imagine it's a bit of a unmatched battle - only a few mites would need to survive to keep the infestation on-going. I wish you luck in battling them - hopefully none of your other birds are as affected as Kingsley.

Hey Donna, don’t be ashamed. My finches had them, and I bought iverlux and spray to get rid of them. The lady I bought it offline from said it’s a big problem in Ontario, which is where I’m also from. Happens to everyone, I didn’t even know there was such a thing. Takes a month to get rid of. Everyone gets them from what I’ve heard. Very hard to see them unless there’s an infestation. They can come from wild birds near your house or air conditioners if there’s nests.

I think you will have to bin the wooden perches because your seeing them on the metal clasp but they actually hide in the crevices of the wood. They can hide and survive on plastic and hard surfaces but not for long if disinfected but any wooden perches or rope perches they will be living inside the wood and rope. Even if you submerge the wooden perch in bleach they are so tiny some still survive.

Thank you so much for this video. It's informative. My budgie has been scratching since the end of august but i couldn't see any red mites and when i googled for budgie mites i only found birds with that deformed nose or beak so I thought if he doesn't have that, maybe he's just scratching because he's changing feathers. But now his eyelids started to look like he has dandruff (the skin flakes) and i've asked a few vets in my city and they all said they're not specialised in birds so I didn't know what to do. I had no idea there's more than one type of mites in birds, so now I think he might have the skin or feathers ones...? Maybe they're smaller than the red ones and that's why I didn't see them. I also can't imagine where he got them because I never take him outside and i also don't have contact with other birds or animals. Since his infestation is probably not that high yet, i was thinking I might use some olive or coconut oil on his feet and nose and see if it helps him and see if i can find something in a pet shop that gets rid of parasites but is milder than ivermectin. But at least now thanks to your video, I at least know what to look for and have a general idea, so thank you!💙🦜

My vet suggested a few drops of neem oil in a spray bottle. My finches were not happy about being handled and sprayed. I mixed up another sprayer about 1 to 16 and used that on their cages, dishes, and toys after washing everything with dish soap and water. The cages and toys were totally dismantled. I also used it on the table that holds the cages. So far I am optimistic. The birds are doing much better. I also have a bottle of Scalex which contains pyrethrins. That's my backup plan, I'm hoping the neem oil solves the problem. We let a pair of purple finches nest in a wreath on our front door. I was taking pictures with my iPad. I think that's how they got in. That's a really great parakeet you've got there. Mine will sit with me for a while, but they usually find something better to do.
@Karinalarasart
@Karinalarasart 2 жыл бұрын
Hi, did the neen oil cure your birds?
@wjniemi
@wjniemi 2 жыл бұрын
@@Karinalarasart Yes, but it wasn't pleasant for any of us. I made 2 different solutions... I think the one I sprayed directly on the birds was 3 drops per quart of water, it needs to be very very diluted. It doesn't take much, you don't have to soak them and I would try to keep it out of their eyes and air holes. I made up a slightly stronger batch to spray down the cage and wipe it down daily... but you don't want that to get on the birds! It was a difficult job and I had to tear down all the bird cages to basic parts and clean them thoroughly as part of the process. But it did work, and the birds are happy and healthy as can be. There was a residual smell of neem oil in the bird cage area for a while but it goes away.

The red ones sounds like 'chiggers'. But a general rule would be don't let your birds walk in the grass or on trees outdoors. They will pick up mites left behind by wild birds. Also it put them at a higher risk of getting west nile disease. I wouldn't recommend using branches you have found outdoors unless they have been boiled.

i know its out of context but i dont know what else to do.. my budgie is about 10 years old and he always vomits on his water and chews for a long time when he eats. i even went to the avian vet with him but the medication the vet suggested made him worse and she also suggested that i separate him with my other budgie, which made him upset so much that he was way way worse, he was about to die. i know budgies are social animals so whatever the reason i couldn't leave him alone without a companion to die unhappy. it's been like 9 months since this happened, he is still generally moody. one time he is happy one time he gets sleepy and fluffy. i dont know what to feed him with other than greens(daily) and eggs sometimes. the vet said the instinct to wanting to have a baby is making him sick. but without a companion he gets more upset so my hands are tied.

Hi, thank you for you perfect explanation, I someone don't have mite or lice, what is the preventive thing we have to do additional to the cleaning? specially for baby nest for canary? thank you.
@Loveofpets

Cleaning is best and check the ends of perches and everything that attached to the cage as that's were they will hide. Also when getting new birds it's best to quarantine and check for mites or any health issue before introducing them to your current birds. Check the nest often as they like nests and they will suck blood from the babies. Change the bedding in the nest every few days if you can.

That was so interesting, I have never seen that in my cage but I am now wondering if these tiny dots come out of a night and settle on my iPad while watching KZbin could I actually have mites in my bedroom pleSE reply

It's possible but they mainly stay close to birds and hide in the ends of the perches and feed on the bird during the night. They are not known to fees off of people

Donna, thank you so very much for this crucial information help. Our birds can get these mites, no matter HOW clean we keep them! So important to keep the number of your closest Avian Vet ! Call her and get to know the vet. Visit and bring flowers 🌸 to the office to tell the workers how grateful that avian medicine is available to you, BEFORE you need vet help.

hello I am writing this message to you from Belgium, I have just discovered red mites in the cages of my parakeets, I have already cleaned the cages and treated my birds with an adequate product, also treat the cages with products.. is what should I be afraid of having red mites all over the living room? how did it go for you? did you manage to get rid of it? I'm desperate.. thanks in advance

Hi. I did lots of cleaning and spraying for mites. I washed the walls and baseboards very often. I kept checking the end of their perches, especially their sleep perch. I cleaned weekly as if there are eggs they would hatch.

Yes they can breed if aloud to but it's best not to let them breed together to keep the species separate. Breeding them together may cause health issues.

5 years ago I had a birds nest on my balcony. When the birds flew away, within 20 minutes there was something crawling on my head. I had the apartment fumigated times. I carried mites to my car on my clothing. I had it fumigated 4 times. I finally left the car out in below 0 F for 4 nights. That were gone. Now 5 years later I still have small crystal like things come out of my skin. I’ve had people over and no bites. I have pictures of the sores. It has been a nightmare. I’m always itchy. They say bird mites don’t live on humans. I have found black specks everywhere. All over my kitchen counter. I’m beginning to think I’ll have this till I die.

Hi. It's a round metal disk with product inside. You hang it on the cage. It's supposed to kill lice and mites but it kills your bird instead. I believe it's not sold in many Pet stores any more.

I wanted to find a youtuber who knows a lot about parrots, but hasn’t got so many comments that mine would get lost, so I found you and went to this video to ask something important. My cockatiel’s tail is shivering a little bit. I know tail bobbing can be a sign of a sick bird, but my bird’s tail isn’t bobbing, just shivering. My birds usually shiver but I’ve never noticed the tail doing that before, but they might have been shaking their tail a little without me noticing. I’m not sure. Can this be a sign of sickness? There are no other symptoms (except maybe sneezing, but that doesn’t happen too often, and I assume it’s just because of dust, or dry environment)
@Loveofpets

He could be scared or nervous. How old is he and how long have you had him. Did you change anything in his cage or location of his cage or anything new in his environment? Any new people in your house or new pets? He could also have a fever but may be nervous. If he continues its worth a visit to a avian vet.

Hi, I have a question about parakeets, I see you have a good experience with them. My son got me a bird cage for my bday cause he knew I want parrots. My husband got me 3, (don’t know why 3, not just 2). I have them for 4 weeks now and 2 of them are getting more comfortable to sit on my finger for a treat. Your opinion: when I should try to get them out of cage? My dream is AG but that will never happen, so, please, help me with your advice. Thank you. Vera

Hi, they can come out right away. Budgies are smart and once they know where their cage is they will go back in. I use millet spray to get them to go back in the cage and I guide them in with a long bird perch or bird ladder. But usually they go in when I say bedtime or they go in by themselves

I had a society finch named Charlie he was ten years old when he died and I found him dead in his nest and he was covered with mites crawling all over his body.
