The reason I am so involved in the nutrition is because I am soooooo biased towards specific marketing. Even to this day, if I do not like the marketing it’s hard for me to get behind the product. This is not just dog food. Everything from bottle water to socks. I know I suffer from this so therefore I know I need to get involved with the quality of the products.

Could you make a video about appropriate diets/nutrients for very active working/competition dogs? I reviewed the Hill's Science Diet website but did not see a food for this purpose.

@@DeborahDruar it’s very frustrating. Hills actually made a high energy diet called Performance, then Active. But for some odd reason they only sell it to police and military dogs. It’s 27% protein/23% fat. It’s unique because it is not a puppy food like most high energy diets. You’ll notice it’s higher in fat for energy but the protein is just a bit raised. ProPlan Sport is used by a lot of folks. It’s 30/20, but is basically. Puppy formula. It’s not as glamorous as protein, but fat is the primary energy source. Working dogs don’t need that much more protein as they do fat.

I have a science diet kibble(s) that has what one can only assume to be hair baked into it. Of course I'm biased. Any intelligent person who does their research SHOULD be biased. I've done animal care/rescue for 5+ decades - pets, farm animals, wildlife rehab. Why have I done research for animal care since I was 10 years old? Because I want to do better for animals under my care. And when I find improved methods of care and food, YES, I better be biased! Of course I'm going in the healthier direction - for myself and my animals. My mantra is also "Extremes are almost never the answer" - so I don't climb on any fad bandwagons. After 50 years of animal care, I know the rollercoaster. The general public goes to one extreme, the extreme causes problems, so they go to the other extreme. I use it all - the best quality kibble I can afford, commercial and home-made fresh food, commercial and home made raw. I consider each animal under my care as individuals. New or sick animals are journaled, to carefully watch their food and what works best for them. I've researched my ingredients, including micronutrients, for decades. I SOURCE AS MUCH FOOD AS I CAN FROM LOCAL FARMS, FROM PEOPLE I KNOW. I started this for the sake of humane treatment of animals. Even if my foster kitties are obligate carnivores, the chicken, fish, turkey and cows that feed them do not need to live miserable, horrid lives. My Great Pyr/Anatolian Shepherd only wants raw - frozen. I wouldn't do that with most dogs, as they could chip a tooth, but he's a soft mouth and loves to take his time working through it. He is 7 and supremely healthy. I grew up in farmland - I know my real expectations. Slaughter day is bad - for every animal. The best it can be is done with merciful methods. There's no decent reason these animals should be living EVERY day in tiny cages, filthy, sick and injured. This is the biggest reason I'm biased more towards locally sourced raw and fresh that I make myself. This is an issue that I see few people talking about - all these people who claim to care about animals. It's important, and should be talked about. With kibble, I have to believe what companies trying to make money tell me. I don't just care about my pets, I care about all animals. Seeing that even the animals that feed me and my pets live well with good care - that's how we care about animals. I have an excellent group of vets, experienced animal caregivers, and nutritionists on KZbin that I listen to already. I don't feel like I'm learning anything on this channel. Perhaps I'll try out another video or two. If anyone has a recommendation of his with a good topic, feel free to recommend.

All you have to do is look around America and most countries adopting Western diets. I don't think anyone has it all figured out yet but people are clearly getting so much sicker now, all kinds of diabetes, dementia, obesity, heart disease etc. Puzzles have more than one piece. There are all kinds of cruel animal trials that translate to humans. How about this vast essentially human population dietary trial translating to pets? If it's an epidemic to humans perhaps there is a correlation to pets. Isn't calling industrial pet food "prescription" when there is no legal requirement for a prescription just marketing too? I can't understand why the macros are ignored on "WD" can that feeds high carbohydrates "prescription" to a diabetic pet. Hospitals do it too, to people. By the same token we don't want to ignore the nutrient effect of solving one problem and then creating another health problem. It's not easy to figure out at all.

@@youtubular007 the name Prescription is simply a name. Hills veterinarians, got going all the way back to Dr Morris himself, felt the therapeutic diets should be dispensed and controlled by veterinarians managing those patients. Deciding distribution of your product is done all the time. Some manufacturers of various products sell just to independent stores and not Big Box stores. Others cater to the Big Box stores. Hills, Purina and RC have every right to do that. Besides, I know Hills can’t produce enough product to fill shelves in more stores.

@@PetFoodPuzzleGuy I'm sorry, I didn't mean to imply these companies don't have a right to market how they choose, just pointing out that "prescription" label on Hills is marketing. Like "Science Diet". If McDonalds started calling a new line of their food which is all developed in huge product labs "Science Food" people might get the impression it's healthier for them. And perhaps it might be considered healthier by some dietary organizations if McD put an amount of minerals and vitamins in their sawdust patties that a group of doctors decided is healthy. Anyhow, to your point about biases, I think all the pieces make the puzzle. All products for profit are going to have some sort of marketing. "Science Food" and "Prescription" is one perception while whole and clean foods is another, and limited ingredients, or no X ingredient, etc and such. And they all have their truth and benefits controversy. It's too hard right now to get prepared food that meets all expectations. Anyhow, for my specific pet being diabetic I guess the controversy with Science Food is that they think that high carbohydrates is appropriate for pets and even diabetic pets while I strongly disagree. I'm not a scientist and they are but I strongly suspect that the endocrinology in pets and humans is similar with regards to GI, glucose and insulin. Plus I think with pets that their ancestors were not eating grains so if that has anything to do with indicting modern diet it's probably more pronounced with pets. I appreciate your channel and shining a light on the mineral levels and vitamins in pet food and wish there were more detailed requirements on the retail labeling. I'm also open to your argument that dry food vs wet is not necessarily causing diabetes or CKD since pets have access to water. That's a controversy that science should have been able to settle with studies at least. I'm not giving my cat dry food kibbles any more because his vet doctor set not to but I'm not sure I 100% believe in that. It feels like gambling having to choose.

My point is just say you are biased and stop trying to pretend like you are not. Stop pretending that Vets are not biased due to kick backs and the financial support the big pet food companies give to their schools and they steer them when they take their few nutrition classes. We all can read and we know that kibble esp. from the big pet food companies do not have good ingredients and are not good for dogs. I've asked Dr Rea with no response, so Ill ask you how is it that human beings are encouraged to eat whole foods but dogs should not? Why are humans supposed to look at ingredients, ones we can pronounce, but we don't need to look at the ingredients for my dog? Make it make sense. Its BS. My choice is real whole food, that I can pronounce for my dog.

I think the issue is most people dont do whole foods proper. Good dog food is formulated to meet the needs. A lot of time people who cook or feed raw dont get the nutrition right. Im pretty sure thats his opinion.

Who said you don’t have to look at ingredients? I look at ingredients all the time, but you also have to see the nutrient profile. Can you tell me what the nutrient levels are for fresh food diets? You need to know these nutrient levels when you have a pet with a disease. For example let’s use chronic kidney disease. It’s critical to know these nutrient levels as high calcium and phosphorus levels can make your kitty sick and further advance the disease.

Our 12 year old was saved from an extreme food allergy reaction from Farmer's Dog food. Long story short, she was saved first, by a regular ole kibble from Purina. She now has been on a kibble-combo from Farmina & Purina, & has never looked so good, so healthy. Bottom line is, the info Glenn & Dr. Rea have put out, SAVED OUR PUPPER. So yeah, you go on with your "INGREDIENT list priority". We'll stick to NUTRIENT levels.
