Pete Holmes is one of the few comedians that I'd like to have a philosophical conversation with.

Not in an aggressive way, but I think you should widen that. Honestly, comedians might be some of the better people to have a convo like that with. They arent afriad to say whats on their mind, a lot of other people try to skate around their beliefs to avoid being cancelled or getting in trouble.

@@armpit_farts7327 you make a good point and I definitely understand that more now than I did 4 years ago (holy shit time flies). Id love to have some deep convos with a lot of them.

@@christophernoia5197 Also, want to say I recognize that this comment was 4 years ago lmao. So I get that you can change in opinion! Just watching people like Bill Burr, Patrice O'Neal, George Carlin, Pryor.... I would LOVEEEE to talk to them about philosophical stuff. They would probably be able to shut me down and tell me whats wrong about how I feel, even though we agree. Its kind of humbling and eye opening. lol

Pete has gold falling out of his head all the time. But I’m so glad when he talks with someone that actually challenges him. It’s like he dials it in quicker and gets to the heart of what he means faster.

This is fascinating. Drew asks if evangelical non denominational is unitarian. Pete: "nonononono." It's interesting to hear Pete talk about that culture which I grew up in too. Most of the influential people like Drew don't have a clue. It's fascinating to hear them ask Pete about it like it's a foreign country.

Anybody who is interested in the “unitive” stuff and the thing about a Great Awakening should look into a philosopher named Alan Watts, specifically a book called “The Taboo Against Knowing Who You Are” and get into Zen Buddhism and Hinduism.

I assume it was hard for Dr Drew to diagnose a patient if they are never allowed to spend 2 seconds describing their symptoms.

I think a lot of people who aren't religious and those who are religious but do not know it misunderstand what religion actually is. We are all naturally spiritual people. We always have a tendency to transcend beyond the material world, hoping for what's to come next after we die. We all do. And we will all die. Religion is a structure put in place for us to come and understand the transcendence of the human experience and to find out which God is the real God. I'm Catholic because I believe Jesus Christ rose from the dead, so he is who he said he is, which is God. He gave his church authority on earth as is in heaven to bind and loose. Catholicism teaches that God is love. Those in different religious upbringings who practice different religions than Catholicism are loved by God and can be saved through no fault of their own and mediation of The Catholic Church. The Church teaches that all other religions that preach peace and uphold the dignity of people have some truth to them and, in some ways, participate with God. But the Church teaches that Catholicism is the fullness of truth, of God's divine revelation to humanity. That's why I'm Catholic and reasonably do not judge other people, while at the same time, willing the good of them in truth of the gospel of Jesus Christ. God bless everyone on their journey of discovery.

Dr. Drew really ought not to be on a microphone. Pete said that his dad might say he struggled with alcohol. Then Drew said “so the alcoholic father caused the narcissistic tendencies.” That’s some sloppy armchair diagnosis.

I cringe at the word religion as it is interpreted today. I am a believer and follower of Jesus... religion is an organization with homogeneous beliefs (I used a big word, wow) and rules. Jesus wants us all to be connected as family... not as different fraternities and sororities. I will clarify one thing...I do believe that Jesus is the Way, The only Way to the Father and to eternal life. Religion is not the way.

i'm not a bible scholar, but the spirit i get from what little reading i've done on jesus seems to show him as a bit of a radical, maverick, and iconoclast. modern christianity today seems focused on keeping followers inside the established safety rails and to not listen to the wrong "christian" songs because the church leaders don't trust the followers to be able to use their own critical thinking.... or dIsCsErNmEnT as they reinterpreted it

His recent stand up was hilarious but really dumb when it came to religion. He whined about a strawman by Atheists, then invented a strawman that does not exist against Atheists. The scientific definition of nothing is not the religious definition. That is called a strawman.
@dremelrocket9572
@dremelrocket9572 7 ай бұрын
My atheist buddy argued the same thing but how do you know that there was your definition of nothing at the inception of existence? That's just assuming, there's no way to scientifically prove that your nothing theory is factual.

I honestly think religion is an indication of bad psychology. In no other area of life would we say that it’s healthy to believe in something on faith. But, because religion has been established for so long it gets a crazy pass. Imagine how that looks to normal people who are honest about what they do and do not know. If humanity was a person, it would seem as though they have psychosis. I will say, the religious people I respect the most are the ones who acknowledge that what they’re doing is absurd, instead of trying to rationalize it. If you have faith - a belief in something regardless of proof - then own it.

I think it has much more to do with your environment and how you were raised. Also just my two cents, whatever it is that you believe or don’t, if it brings joy and does not harm anyone, than live and let live. We don’t have to agree but we can co-exist peacefully
@stevenalexander7776
@stevenalexander7776 3 ай бұрын
It seems like you are using the word “faith” really poorly. You are presupposing that a person has no reasons for believing something but believing it anyway. People have reasons for believing things-religious and otherwise. For example, you take on faith that your loved ones care about you and will behave as if they do have your best interests at heart. There is a faith element to this belief of yours even though you have additional reasons for believing it.
