That was beautiful!! Eddie singing his idol Pete Townshend!! 😊💓🤘✌️

A truly great song from 1977s Rough Mix with Ronnie Lane. I saw The Who at the Albert Hall in London in 2000, the first all star Teenage Cancer Trust gig, Eddie was a guest that night. He flew to London just to do that gig, then back again. Pete has always been so supportive of Eddie. As always Paul's band back Pete beautifully.

I remember watching this the night that it aired! I popped in a blank tape and recorded it on my VCR. Oh to be a young teen in the 90's! Lol! Such a great performance! Love Eddie Veddar. 💜🎙🎸🎶🖤

Recently repurchased Rough Mix from which this song was born. Vedder sang Ronnie Lane's part well. One thing about aging rockers: long after the vocals fast, most never forget how to play. Thanks for sharing this gem!

I remember the exact words to every song from the original Rough Mix album. I think that Eddie Vedder's rendition of the Who songs from Quadrophenia are stupendously amazing, but in the peformance of this song it seems like he was maybe having an off-night, and he flubbed 2 verses of the lyrics. Still, I'm glad he joined up with Pete Townshend to sing it. Ronnie Lane's music lives on!

@@xblood1978 Except I suspect Townshend OK'ed the Vedder's changes beforehand. Townshend himself changes the tune by starting with the verse about Danny, instead of the one about Johnny Boy, which is the way the tune appears on the Rough Mix album. I don't know why Pete & Eddie changed it -- it's not an improvement. Love the original!

These two are a great example of people who do not actually sing "well" that make up for it with beautiful lyrics and writing to fit their voices. Not overproduced or tuned. You can hear the cracks and strains, and bum notes. It's much better than perfect pop of today.

The original on rough mix is still better. Ronnie Lane , one of the greatest musicians of the 60s and 70s that so few really know about. Rod Stewart credits him for being one of his greatest influences though he treated Ronnie rather Shabbily in the Faces. Ronnie wrote the ooh la la song

He wasn't done for it as it was proved that he was researching into child abuse as obviously it's something he hates. Use of child pornography doesn't get punished with a slap on the back of the hand 'caution'. He was niaive to think he could do this kind of research on his own and paid the price with a tabloid headline which is remembered over anything good he has done.

not many notes were hit in general. for pete it kinda works because he wrote it and can get around the lyrics in a way that still feels authentic. for the other guy, not so much.
