I waited on John Entwhistle and Simon Phillips when they were touring in '88. They came into our restaurant, unfortunately without Pete and Roger. Entwhistle autographed my "Live at Leeds" album, quite a thrill.

@@gardensofthegods Sad but somewhat true, the autopsy report has been on the internet. Entwistle died in his sleep in his hotel room with a groupie the night before a concert tour. A small amount of cocaine was found in his system. This aggravated an existing heart condition, aortic aneurysm I believe. He didn't die of an overdose per se. But indulging in drinking, smoking, cocaine when you have a heart condition, if you are aware of it, speaks for itself. He passed long ago, but as with Moon, I wish he'd been able to overcome the addictions.

I never really met an addict who was actually having fun... they always end up getting sick of having to constantly look for that next High . I'm glad I'm Eminem was one of the smart ones who was able to deal with his drug and booze addiction. I just saw him in an interview ( Sway and Eminem / kamikaze interview ) and he looks good , really healthy for 48 . I don't think he got any filler injections or any of that nonsense like Keanu Reeves and other high-profile men .

In college I played drums in a power trio "pizza band" and we took that live version of Bargain and used it as our template for the song live. At the time it was the only version we had ever heard and man that was a show stopper of a song. You could really chew into it live and people responed to it with big round eyes. Pretty sure I got laid a couple of times just because of that songs ending. I had Keith's licks down perfect as I was obsessed with his playing at the time and nailed it pat.

These Sell Out songs were ever performed live: Mary Ann With The Shaky Hand, I Can See For Miles, Relax and Tattoo. Out of those, Relax performed live at the Fillmore East is my favourite. But I agree with you, The Who Sell Out is a great album, and it's a shame they didn't perform more of those songs live. I would have loved to hear Melancholia performed live, for instance...

A lot of people don't know that in the early days when the Rolling Stones were in jail or some such thing The Who recorded a couple of stones tunes. I think Under My Thumb was actually one of them. It's been so long I can't remember the other one, not even sure it was Thumb but they did record two tracks.

Of course Under My Thumb wasn't on the original Odds and Sods album that was released in 1974 which was a single album format. John said there were enough songs for a double album at the time so I guess they must have added the rest by the time CD's allowed for more songs to be applied to the format. In the late 1970s the Who were without question the biggest band in the world, it was absolute Whomania, in my opinion even bigger than Beatlemania where the frenzy was so bad that 11 people in Ohio lost their lives in a stampede to see them and to me it was all because of two movies: The Kids are alright and Quadrophenia. Really shows the power of cinema not to mention great songwriting.

You are right, 1979 was their year, even tho they were still hurting from the loss of Keith. You might like the book "Are the kids all right?" which came out in the early 80s. It's out of print, but I found a copy in a second-hand bookshop. It's an in-depth chronicle of the ill-fated Cincinnatti concert, and rock culture at that point in time.

People weren't killed trying to see the Beatles, but people were killed trying to see the Who. Beatles back in the 1960s weren't as popular as you think. By 1966 they were no longer selling out shows, people were burning their records, and by late 1960s people thought they were too weird and by the 1970s they were considered passe. It wasn't until the double albums, the red and blue greatest hits albums came out in the mid 1970s that people started picking up how great they were. I remember all this, I lived through it. Beatles were popular for a year and by the next year people tired of them
