When Nikon did something I did not like. I moved on and happily found Fujifilm. If AF perfection, or any feature, is a necessary requirement for anyone you just move on. Fuji's AF is unlikely to ever be the best as their engineering team has to work around active patents held by Canon, Nikon and Sony. They all make wonderful images in the hands of people who learn how to use them. This is one of my favorite channels discovered through Pal2tech. Way to go Pete.

Thanks so much! I agree and this is the thing I find so interesting. After all this time, if you still are unhappy with a brand, you owe it to yourself to switch. It’s also amazing how triggered some people get from a video like this where I just tell them what I experienced and even show video/images too. It’s such an interesting phenomenon.
@lionheart4424

You can move on, and naturally at this point is the best choice because most Fuji shooters that do paid work has to adopt another brand (Pete with Canon, Omar with Nikon, Roman Fox now with Sony), or others just abandon ship. Still, doesn't hurt to voice your concern, specially if you are still using the brand of your choice. The worst part is that the best offerings are only on full frame for other brands, which comes with extra weight, size and increased prices.

Hey Pete, first I want to thank you for this video. Video AF looks improved slightly as others have reported, and I liked that you test it out in a low light environment. I'll have to say that to properly showcase the performance of stills, you would have to show a slideshow of shots taken in burst and disclose how many were actually in focus vs those out of focus. For all we know, the pictures shown were a handful of "lucky" ones. Now, I know you are a professional photographer and I want to trust your judgment here. In the end that's why doing all these AF tests is so draining. Finally, that solo at the end was you? That was fire! Wish you a happy new year and thanks for sticking with FUJIFILM.

It's better. But still not great. I used it in low light conditions during Christmas with my family. And it would freak out a lot. Giving me the red "AF" box, and not taking the shot maybe one third of the time. Another third of the time it would give me a false positive. I noticed it is still focusing on the sharpest contrast item/object in the scene, instead of the eye or face.I was using my X-T5 with the newest18mm 1.4, and my X100VI with the face/eye tracker. Eventually I moved to manual focus, and I was getting much closer shots my self. In bright daylight, it is much better at tracking my dogs running around. On that environment, I tihnk it is much improved. This is a step in the right direction. But I don't think we should give them a brake yet "Trust Takes Years To Build, Seconds To Break And Forever To Repair"

The biggest issue before was that the camera seemed to be catching whatever it should(like human eyes) rather quickly, but then I realized it actually didn't focus when viewing the photos on bigger screens, after this update the situation seems to be getting better but I'm still not confident given my past experience with fuji bodies and viewing photos afterward is like easter eggs. One thing I found is to use AFC CUSTOM to set tracking stickiness to max when shooting in a chaotic environment like you have here. Face detect plus max stickiness will tend to reduce the jumping from the face to the mic and then back to the face. Choosing a better vantage point so that the singer eyes never go behind the mic in the frame, helps a lot too. (Sorry, had to add that). In a recent studio test, I found that my Sony ZV-E10 was actually worse than my Fujifilm X-S20 when it came to dealing with objects passing between the face and the camera. I'm sure that most people would assume that the Fujifilm would come off as second best, just based on reputation. I sometimes wonder with these AF reviews how much Fujifilm's AF reputation colours the interpretation of the results.

My first thought: That club environment has to be quite challenging for any AF system shooting video. I have zero experience doing video, so I'm not sure about that. It would be interesting to see side by side with a Sony for example and see the difference. Having said that, I doubt I'll ever be using my camera for video. I've taken out the new X-T5 firmware in London twice, using AF-C for photos of people moving about. It definitely seems quite sticky (which is good) and I've not noticed false positives. Face tracking can grab the wrong faces, so I'd likely turn it off for most street photos. I don't like how it'll hunt for faces far outside of the focus zone box.

I did notice an improvement in the AF-C performance. I also don’t use eye auto detect, because it just drives me nuts, so those features are wasted on me. Extremely please with the new system and believe it or the S1R with contrast detect auto-focus is more reliable and continuous auto focusing mode than my previously owned XH2S and X-T5. I am happy with GFX 100SII and 50SII for studio work. One day, Fujifilm might get their cameras auto focusing system on par with the other camera makers. I've used a Sony 6500 for a couple of years to shoot live events during the period 2017-2019, and I would never switch back to Sony after trying Fuji. The difference is having a camera which is part of a system (Sony: shoot, import, edit, edit, edit, deliver) or having a camera that can get incredible shots without further editing (Fuji: shoot, deliver). You should edit only if you shoot with some difficult light (for example, a backlight situation) or if you're a perfectionist. Pictures are beautiful, who cares if some shots are not perfectly focused? If I get 40Mpx images and deliver 2000px pictures, a subtle out of focus is very rarely an issue. And in any case consider that I shoot 5 to 10 times the number of pictures I deliver to my clients, and even if I have to trash 1 shot out of every 5 for the AF (which is NEVER the case), I still have hundreds of good shots to choose from. Typically during a 4-hour conference, I shoot between 1000 and 1500 shots, and it's very rare that I have to trash 10% of the shots because of the AF (of course I 'm not counting blurred images for other issues like slow shutter or shaky hands on my side). Of course if you have to shoot olympic games and every single shot should be perfect, then probably you should need a camera with a better AF. I would also switch in that case, but then don't get a Sony A6xxx, start with an A7x kit and save money for some good expensive lens.

usually my trick for shooting live musicians on video, on a Fuji... which I do A LOT (XT-30ii, amusingly NEVER updated the firmware) AFC, but spot focusing. usually stick that little square somewhere middle width, 2/3rds height. which more often than not, usually lands on people's faces singing on microphone when I pan past them, and/or faces behind drums and/or fingers plucking instruments. and if it doesn't, just quickly whizz that square where I need it with the touchscreen. ...yeah maybe this is slightly easier, because I just use the screen, not the EVF. and it's only EVER failed me (briefly) once if a horrifically/EXTREMELY backlit gig, where it lost someone's face completely. but that's like... one fail, out of 200, in the past year or so. ... but I'm also curious whether there's a better way to do it. and if my method ONLY works using the touchscreen/no EVF?

Hi Pete, thank you so much for the effort to test the latest FMW 4.10 from FUJIFILM. I appreciated the open approach. It looks better and promising, perhaps they will also enhance more in the near future. All the caos generated around the FUJI AF as an interesting learning experience. For sure FUJIFILM has done a really bad job with the communication about it. As user we have to be realistic and not just brand supporter, we pay good money and the declared perfomances must be there. As well, it was an eyes open process to see how many content creator moved from silence, to brand supporter and finally forced to admit the issue, that means no much professionalism there but just the interest to please the brand. Once again thanks for being very active on this making tests and sharing result. And, I really like your b&w pics. Nice mood indeed. The bass solo??? Wow ... great! Happy Holiday & peace.

Really? I think Canon is the most hated brand by far. And Fuji fanboys play a major role in that regard. As if any consumer played any role in the creation of these wonderful products. The simple fact is if you need the best AF performance for your type of photography, then Canon and Sony rules. Honestly, I mainly shoot birds and wildlife, so portrait photography is not a priority for me. But sometimes I need to do a portrait. I use a manual focus lens for that with a very thin DOF at down to F0.95. What a portrait or street photographer does with world class AF I don’t know. People are just weird I guess.

I've watched hundreds of videos about Fujifilm to research every camera and every lens, and the biggest takeaway is that there's always autofocus problems for every camera and every lens, and almost every reviewer is complaining about autofocus in almost every video. How can Fujifilm be so incapable of resolving this? I decided to cancel my Fujifilm system I was planning on building for video.

Kind of like a college bar where people kind of grew too old to be in the college bar, and yet not a college bar, but the people are too old to really be there, but they are there. Not arrested adolescence but aborted adulthood? Hard to describe the impressions. But thanks for the video, interesting shots. I tested the latest firmware for the XH2 and there was a big improvement on AF performance. It’s still not the best but it’s noticeably more reliable. I never bought into Fujifilm for their AF performance but for their image quality, form factor and certain features. I’ve recently used a $10k Hassleblad setup that had equally or less reliable AF than the Fujifilm bodies that I own but I never hear Hasslblad owners complain. Having a product that is easily accessible by the masses, opens the door to critics that aren’t interested in learning the craft but are just gear focused. Not every camera is a universal tool, and you should know what tool is best for your intended use. You don’t grab an FX3 for portrait work, nor would you grab a Hassleblad for videography work.

I updated both of my Fuji cameras the XT5 and the GFX 100 SII and I did notice a significant improvement. I was quite nervous which I've mentioned to you about upgrading the GFX 100S ii because that was actually working quite well but after seeing a few comments online and a few other people mentioned it to me that it was fine I was good to go. I think your video is very accurate. I think video shooters or content creators are going to struggle. I think it's gonna be fine for Talking Heads videos but for multi face type scenarios like weddings or events then the camera is going to struggle and then you've got a decision to make around. Is this the camera system you need to use for video but from a stills perspective and maybe I'm biased but I shoot stills mostly the camera is great. I was at a Christmas function with my family and I was just playing around taking some photos of the family and I was really impressed with how sticky the XT5 was again and I keep saying this to a lot of people one setting I do change and I would recommend you have a play with this. It's not always ideal in certain scenarios but pick one eye left or right what you'll find is that it then? Doesn't jump to the other eye it's not looking. It just settles on the left or the right eye. This is more ideal if the person is in front of you straight on obviously but that has some practical application applications. I do feel like the XT5 is now workable for this type of scenario around taking photos of portraits and so on which is good. I feel this time at least they took their time getting it right and we've now got a camera that's workable. I'm not one of those people as you know that's going to spit the dummy and carry on and whinge and moan. I will just find work around. Overall I've got to a point of acceptance and that acceptance phase is accepting that the camera is not perfect and then you can actually work with it as opposed to trying to make something perfect and getting angry about it is not gonna achieve anything you have to understand that every camera has strength and weaknesses for me. The image quality and colours out of Fuji far outweighs the fact that it doesn't focus all the time because I will just still get the shot somehow with the workaround tricks that I know but other people are purely looking at it from a focus perspective and I think that's dangerous because the camera probably is not going to suit you. Everything is a weigh up process.

Thanks for another great video. Here’s my take on the whole AF issue. In 2 years of owning my X-T5 it’s never been in movie mode so my comments are limited to stills.Happy with the update, eye tracking seems stickier especially when on lock to a specific eye. Prior to Fuji I started my hobbyist journey with a couple of Sony APSC cameras and shot loads of pics of my newborn granddaughter with AF in auto and many were out of focus - newbie user error. Only when I switched to X-T4 and now X-T5 did I learn and understand the exposure triangle, helped by the dials. Now able to concentrate on other aspects of photography like focusing and improving steadily. This whole AF issue is starting to bore me. Simple answer - if the AF is bothering someone so much then move to a different brand and stop revisiting Fuji videos and whining. Secondly, Pete is a professional photographer who shares his experience at no cost or benefit to himself - if you don’t like the content then start your own channel and show us how to do it. In all honesty shooting a video of a band performing is a challenge for any camera, you can’t expect the camera to know which person it should lock on unless you track that person. Best for those case scenarios is setting your camera’s aperture to f4 and focus manually on your subject, increase your ISO and clean up your files in post….this way at least you come with footage that is in focus and no pulsing/hunting. And if you want to shoot with AFC on video at let’s say f2 or f2.8 (the Hollywood standard aperture) just set your camera focus limiter around your subject and practice, practice!

The whole discussion about the AF is completely overrated. It doesn't matter whether one camera can do something even better if the other can do it well enough in most cases. Or are we all BiF photographers now? And even there the Fujifilm delivers, even if not quite as perfectly as others. I'm talking about AF for photos here. There is nothing that an X-T5 and especially an X-H2s can't do confidently with more than enough sharp images. Unfortunately, the topic is good for clickbait and hundreds of bashers think they have to increase their self-esteem under such videos by making other things worse. Brave new internet world.

You don’t have to condescend at all to make whatever point you’re making if that point passes on its own merit. Isn’t it? Agree or disagree? 2. If those “stupid tests” are okay for a Sony Nikon or Canon, why are they bad to evaluate a Fuji? 3. I took out the Xt5 to shoot. It occasionally focuses on things for stills. Mostly misses. And on video the AF looks like a 2014 camera focusing with 1 step at a time. It’s stupid because THIS IS NOT THE CAMERA WE BOUGHT. This shite needs to stop. If this is adequate AF, don’t freaking come around and talk about how good the AF is when they launch the NEXT gen cameras with better AF. If this is good, any improvement should be no biggie.
