Peter Benoit ~ what a noteworthy composer! I really enjoyed listening to this exquisite performance. Thank you!

Upon searching for the influence on Italian American composer A.L. Scarmolin's sound, I think I have traced the style back to Flemish Jef Van Hoof and in turn his mentor Peter Benoit. Thanks for help. Now to listen to more Benoit.

Benoit is in fact a much underrated composer. First I thought because he wrote mostly vocal works on terribly silly Flemish texts. But then, most librettos used by other composers like even Mozart, Bach ...are just as silly. So why this neglect ? If this piece would be presented as by Dvorak or Smetana it would be praised !

Certainly underrated - love his oratorio 'De Schelde', & 'The Pacification of Ghent'...& this is beautifully constructed !
@christianwouters67643 жыл бұрын
@@Clivejvaughan I have the score of De Schelde. What immediately struck me was the great rhytmic variation that B uses. More so than his more famous collegues. We see it in this piece also, f.i. the coda of the introduction. I know of no other likewise syncopation in 19th century music.

The same is going on with many Dutch composers.

@@engelbertschoormans But they get at least recognition in The Netherlands themselves. In Belgium culture is in hands of the politically correct left and they hate everything that reeks of nationalism. So Benoit and most other Flemish composers get no chance in the media. In Holland people are proud of Pijper and Wagenaar, here we are supposed to be ashamed for Benoit.
