Peter Boghossian teaches Corey Drayton techniques from his book How to Have Impossible Conversations in order for Corey to use them when speaking with his Woke friends in Portland.
We filmed this in late 2020. Pete is immunocompromised, so we played it safe and did the coaching remotely.
If you haven't seen the episode I put together with Corey speaking with his friend Eric, I recommend checking that out - • Episode Four - Speakin...
Next, I'll post the 2 hour conversation that Corey had with Eric.

Wow, he nails what it's like in the corporate world. I graduated near the top of my class, but along the way I earned an internship at a Blue Chip. This opened doors to nothing but Blue Chips and these are where you are to be steered, but only as wallpaper, not really climbing in your career. If you aren't the raving caracutures they expect, you won't be advancing, and as incentives became financial they have flooded in black women in particular which compete with you, not just because they are using skin color, but the mentality they are looking for. Those that advance are in newly created positions that suddenly lack requiring any spread sheet skills. Even below average performers are moved into management over you. So, in the end, no one is better off when wokeness erodes a business, trumps merit & competence.

I work in film... About 6 years ago I started having positive conversations where I planted a crap ton of doubt 😂 On numerous topics I just couldn't stay quiet! But I definitely love this technique! Getting them to actually think these ideas through is hard but pays off most of the time. I have ppl from a show I did a year ago call me up to say begrudgingly that I was right. Kept 3 sets of parents from putting their 10-14 year Olds on puberty blockers ... It's painful and slow but it's definitely better than keeping quiet!

Three separate parents? That is truly insanity that so many people have nearly done so much damage. I live in southern CA and have woken up plenty of people from general leftist dogma but it can take years. I mainly try and just ask them questions about their views so they have to support it logically without just name calling their opponents. I typically point out where they are wrong and provide them evidence and then they resist and want to change the subject. I probably make too many statements though, which might slow down the process and cause the backfire effect.

@@147salsa - I can relate. It was a personal growth step for me to discern much quicker how a conversation with a ranting Woke person was going nowhere fast. Why waste time with someone not listening, not engaging in dialog ( two people conversing, not only one preaching ), and not respecting my voice in the matter. I have asked questions, though not enough. Yes, I leaned more on counter-points, "evidence" and stats, but maybe it planted a seed or two of doubt. Keep up the good work!

I VERY MUCH AGREE. Better than keeping quiet. Good to know that someone in "The Industry" does speak up and contribute to true Diversity. ( Amazing how superficial the Left can be in terms of just hiring enough "colors" and "sexes" makes for "diversity". It was when I immersed within the Left that the Diversity they were talking about was just a thinly veiled version of the Right that only wanted versions of their own thinking and no one else. Just insular tribalism. What makes it worse is that the Left prides itself on how open and "diverse" they are. BS. )

I like the tools that Peter is supplying. One problem, I have watched a lot of his videos where he is speaking to people (including Ivy League students who are supposed to be bright) and they very often will not allow for any circumstances or conditions or new information to change their positions. I am reminded of a Mark Twain quote, "It is easier to fool a person than convince them they have been fooled." That quote may be very applicable to the way people get their information it also points to the fact that most people are unwilling to be swayed by facts.

If you think about the meta of this video it’s wild. Man 1 coaches man 2 how to have a conversation with coworkers on culture associated with his own background. How wild is it that a black man might feel adverse, or like he could lose his job, if he talks about his personal feelings or experiences that go against what his coworkers think the culture is.

Great video! Interestingly, I started doing this out of laziness. I knew all the data, but I got tired of doing other stubborn friends' homework for them. I would spend hours learning about a topic, reading about it, looking at data, and talking to people only to discover that I was always faced with emotional reactions to something a person "felt" was true (that they held with some strange confidence). Maybe they saw someone on TV making the claim or heard it from their college prof. So instead of trying to convince them of a different thing, I adopted a mindset of simply planting seeds. Something that would inspire a person to look more into the topic (like the number of whatever race shot by police), to do their own homework ... late at night when they are bored and don't feel like they are in a debate. A time when there are no "I told you so's" or lost face. A good byproduct of this is that they may learn something I didn't know and share it with me ... Instead of just regurgitating what I told them to someone else like they originally did to me. Now we both have more to chew on.

very little is usually accomplished by political arguments on strongly divisive issues, beyond providing entertainment for believers of whatever point of view. we rarely win such arguments with facts and logic. it's in true discussions with trust and good will that some distance towards truth or the good can be really made.

When the company suddenly started scheduling time wasting bridge building, they didn't say they were trying to get people to break an unwritten rule: no politics or religion talk at work. This was their excuse to do nothing but talk all day, but I would simply ask them, "you do see me?", this company hires plenty of blacks. They literally say, "not you, you're not really black." I say I am, what do you mean??? Well, you're mixed with something. I am not. And look at them. "You are the minority on the floor. Lololol!" (I point to the bay where almost every cubicle is a black woman). Crickets. How does this end? Suddenly they all need to be somewhere. They simply never answered me and I jacked up many because they liked to spend so much time in the break room, right next to my desk. Even where my desk was was a show for anyone getting off the lift.

Totally fascinating conversation and illuminating. This explains perfectly when I, over the covid period, very politely said to hundreds of different people, that I've read well over 150 clinical trials on mask efficacy and all the best ones (RCTs with meta analysis) say they don't work at all to stop any airborne virus, it had zero effect. Even doctors and nurses. I went out of my way to try to tell people because I thought they would want to know this, but everyone would either change the subject or defend mask wearing with some bizarre, illogical low level evidence point. This video absolutely confirms my suspicions I had about a year ago coming through that weird period. Self realisation needs to come from the self, it can't be forced down people's throats. But, the question whether people can actually change their mind on something is a good one because I think with all the tactics that Peter has put forward, and God bless his patience, some people will never, ever, ever change their stance on something.

Ya I think the method underestimates the hostility that will automatically appear and the mental gymnastics at play. For example, "there's only 20 reported police shootings bc the US is dominated by white supremacy. so most of the shootings are covered up". A moderately intelligent person can always fabricate a reason to justify their views. That's my experience at least

The problem this technique encounters is that most people don't even have an argument for what they believe. Most people in a round about way say "I believe it cause it's true"

This was hard for me to watch. Peter, if you read this, there's something you need to know. The Blue Yeti is a side-address microphone. Talking into the top of it makes your voice sound tinny and slightly distorted. Also, it's backwards, In the cardioid pattern (which is what you should be using if you're alone in a single room) the Blue logo should be parallel to your face. The sound quality will be a lot better if you do that.

I am Shane, we can no longer afford to be the silent majority. It's gone too far. There's no room for fence-sitting. We - you - must pushback! And we need to learn how to do that. It takes courage, but make no mistake: we are in a war for the souls of our children!

What I notice, is that it is near impossible for them not to get defensive or triggered, and I suspect it may be because they are smart enough to understand that there is reason for severe doubts about these ideas, and are worried about the frailty of these ideas being exposed and overturned as this puts them at odds with the mob, which I believe is the true motivation.

This is so true. Woke ideology has me treating black people as abstractions rather than real people. I now feel uncomfortable with black people because I have the feeling they hate white people and resent them. I used to just treat people as individuals, black, white, nice, unpleasant, rich, poor and so on. Yes I had black friends. Why do I feel uncomfortable? Because most adverts now feature a black cast, news sites such as the BBC propagate resentment stories and identity politics, it’s horrible. We do not have labels attached, we do not conform to simplistic categories. We are people.

I think we need to acknowledge that many wokists know that they're evil and don't care. They love the power it gives them and the freedom to say and do horrible things to people without consequence. That's why they'll always gaslight, deflect, and try to destroy people's perception of dissenters. And if all of that fails they'll run away and cry for someone with more power to silence you.

Peter himself uses these techniques for his street epistemology on college campuses. Hate to say that I have not seen any video yet where a so called woke person has changed their view. Or even had an ability to think of any argument where they could be persuaded to alter their level of conviction. If you want a technique to have a dialogue with a woke person, this probably isn't it. These individuals seem to prioritize being good people. And their path to righteousness is the beliefs that they have, and in some cases, their willingness to destroy their opponents. Peter has the benefit of having a large enough audience where he can produce something of value from having these conversations because he can then show others how stubborn the ideologues are. Unfortunately, for regular people with no platform, you stand to gain little from making an attempt. You may even suffer consequences for doing so. I don't mean to say that we should shy away from conversations simply because it may result in a personal loss. It is better to be brave and say what you believe. What I am saying is that the techniques he prescribes likely won't yield a positive result. I believe that one thing Peter said that is absolutely true is that you will have more success with less people chiming in and running interference. I've gotten interesting things out of people one on one. But I wouldn't say any of these people were woke. They were just people who were a bit skittish about what they've seen going on. Edit: Funny enough, just after writing this, I found a video with Peter and Dave Rubin titled "Don't even try reasoning with these people". Granted, this interview took place in 2017. "How to have impossible conversations" was published in 2019. He may have changed his tack during those two years and decided that it was actually valuable to try. I should say that I'm actually a fan of Peter. I have a fair amount of respect for him. I just don't see this prescription landing any points for us common folk with regular jobs. Edit again: Alright well I watched the Dave Rubin interview and Peter doesn't make a case that you shouldn't make any attempt to talk to these people. He was mainly detailing the convoluted situation that we're in with wokeness in the University. Felt like I needed to have some journalistic integrity, even though I'm not a journalist.
