Anybody who found this interesting should read about the wreck of the Dutch East India flagship Zuytdorp off Western Australia in 1712. The modern tale of its discover and the ancient tale of its wreck are both equally interesting.

Also there were other reasons why Jeronimus Cornelius applied to be on the Batavia. He was an apothecary who lost his business after his 8 month old baby died of syphilis. This stigma from this was huge. His business dried up and his debts were mounting. He was also seeking to avoid his creditors.

I have a couple of older books on the Batavia and I feel Peter's one is by far the best. He has a common sense and matter of factly approach to human nature which really grabbed me. I just wish they would do a big budget movie or series off his book

So "Abrolhos" is a contraction of abrir seu olho - open your eyes. It must have been a common abbreviation in the past because there are a collection of islands off the coast of Brazil which are called the Abrolhos as well.

When it is made it just has to be an European and a Australian-New Zealand production. Hollywood would just ruin it with their PC-ridicule, their obsession with modernizing historical characters, and dialogues that serve no purpose etc.@Scott Laux

The ringleader got the breaking wheel punishment in Jakarta. Breaker Morants wife Irish born Daisy Bates who was a bush missionary to aboriginal people noticed that the Aboriginal people in the Murchison valley practiced European agricultural methods, and had blond hair and blue eyes .This is to be region where the morooned Dutch sailors were left to rot on the Australian mainland.

It's not really an "Australian" story, it's a Dutch story.

Well it happens near Australia and they were the ones who found and salvaged the wreck, and plenty of Dutch people settled in Aus so I think it’s ok.

@philhutchison55664 жыл бұрын
If you read/listen to Peter's book it does describe another dutch mariner who, about 20 years earlier, discovered the route . He stopped on one of those chain of islands and nailed a metal plate to a tree on the island. He told all to avoid the route because of the reefs in the area.

"This isn't marketing schtik". It's absolutley marketing schtik. To promote his book. For this guy to be claiming he'd never heard of it in 1999 simply means he was uninformed. There was an excellent documentary made about the Batavia in 1995. If you look through the posts people refer to a film from the 70s and several other articles. "without ruining MY story". Skakespeare dies over a decade before the events of the Batavia. At least get some basic facts right.
