Visually the live concert version of “In Your Eyes” is excellent. However, the arrangement of the song in the concert version is not the same as the studio version from the “So” album. Salvo, if you haven’t already reacted to “In Your Eyes” then O highly recommend the first listen be the studio version before any other version be it in concert, or any other version which might exist and I’m not aware of. The quality of the studio version of “In Your Eyes” is unmatched.

Peter Gabriel is still making music. Look up his double album I/O that came out late in 2023. He has two versions of each song (Dark Side, Light Side) mix. He is as creative as ever.

I love this one and Sledgehammer, but you should definitely watch both videos - groundbreaking and freaky and the same time! I'm not sure what the guys from Genesis were "doing", but both Peter and Phil Collins were bursting with talent.

So much funk! This song and Gabriel's other big hit of the era, "Sledgehammer", seemed to come out of nowhere in 1986/87, but they grew out of PG's earlier song "Shock the Monkey". There's a lot of sauce in this track and many of his other songs, but his career path has been like that of a chameleon - it alters to fit the times. Well worth a deep dive. Many of his songs of the era were accompanied by great innovative videos which are also worth checking out.

For some reason I’ve always really enjoyed that percussive “slap” sound that occurs here and there during the production on beat 6 if you break the time signature downs into 8’s.

From his work with Genesis to his solo work, his musicality can be seen across genres. He pulled inspiration from World Folk music to his signature sound & style with intelligence & humor. He has a video from a concert on a round stage where the whole band is dancing & singing with amazing energy. The Sledgehammer video used stop-motion animation to excellent effect.

Definitely check out the OMVs for both this and Sledgehammer - both are trippy and amazeballs. Also check out PG’s live performance of In Your Eyes from 1993’s Secret World tour - I was lucky enough to see him on that tour and it was one of the most incredible shows I’ve ever seen, and I’ve seen a LOT.

Great song,. but yes, you blew it by not watching the video as others have said before me. If you do Sledgehammer get the video version. This was part of an era where the videos were almost an intrinsic part of the song. OH and yes you should watch the entire Secret World concert video.

You have missed out not watching the video although you may have been distracted from the lyrics just from the visual stimulation of the video. His time with Genesis is often used to mark the difference in the band's focus. You have Peter Gabriel's Genesis and then you have the Phil Collins' Genesis.

if you're reacting to a song from the 80s, you really MUST play the music video associated with the song, or else you're missing out on half of the song's cultural impact. I realize there's a generation (or two?) who don't understand that, because they didn't grow up on MTV, but it's a good rule of thumb to keep in mind.
