Don't let the video overshadow the music. This is a great groove with great musicians.

This song is a critique of materialism/consumerism (and I would say by extension capitalism). Peter Gabriel was always very focused on messages that highlight the suffering people around the world. When he says, "I will pray to a big god as I kneel in the big church" it sums it up pretty well. That idea contradicts everything religion likes to say it stands for.

Th lyrics are satirical: he's ripping materialistic people hard. I saw him on the tour for this album, and it's probably the best concert I've ever seen. He is a mesmerizing performer and artist. This album, So, was nominated for Album of the Year at the Grammy's, but lost out to Paul Simon's Graceland which was a really big hit commercially and with critics. If you want to see what Peter is really about musically, listen to Red Rain off this album, although every song on this album is awesome in its own way. If you really want to see his artistic side listen to his earlier albums. Rhytm of the Heat will knock your socls off as will San Jacinto. Games without Frontiers and Solsbury Hill are good earlier hits. Then there's Shock the Monkey. It's all good. Thanks for listening and sharing. Peace from SF

“Hi there!” Damn, that took me back. Haven’t heard this one in a while. Love it. I could never tell how sarcastic this song was supposed to be. It starts out like we’re there with him, but by the end he seems deep in his ego. I dunno. I also always loved this line: “And my heaven will be a big hell / And I will walk through the front door.” Great reaction though man. Peace.

If you notice in the middle of the video, his small roots try to re-appear and get smashed by concrete. At the end of it, his small looking glass crumbles, and he blossoms back out from those roots. "Hi there!"

Hopped on a plane from a small town in europe and ended up in a big city Toronto. After 5 years, I regreated it and wished I remained in the small town. I gave up my land, gruit trees and animals to move to an apartment tower in the sky. I lost it all for 4 walls and a view of a tower.

You wonder how big Peter Gabriel really was ? Well let me remind U of the glorious MTV 80´s. He won 9 of the prices in 1987 for Sledgehammer. And he didn´t compete with light-weights like today... Rihanna Drake Jayz and all lill whatever weedsmoking gangsta wannabees. He was up against the heavy boys.. Michael Jackson, Prince, Madonna, Collins, U2, Sting. Knopfler and all the one hit wonders we were so happy to enjoy back in thye days.

He was so much more than this album, “So” but it was undoubtedly his first worldwide smash. It sold 5 million copies in the US alone. He had fronted Genesis in the late 60s and early 70s. Then his solo career started in 1977 with his debut album. His first 4 albums were all called “Peter Gabriel” and all are great. He wasn’t afraid to experiment especially with his rhythms. He had a few hits, but So propelled him everywhere. Sledgehammer and Big Time were perhaps purposely commercial but there were other hits too in Red Rain and Don’t Give Up. He’s a brilliant artist. Always pushing boundaries.

I have a direct answer to your "small town" question. I was born and raised in Geismar, Louisiana, about 30 mi south of Baton Rouge. Zero grocery stores. One gas station. When he says _"The place where I come from, is a small town. They think so small and use small words. But not me, im smarter than that. Ive worked it out."_ I joined the military and saw Dubai, Singapore, Hong Kong, now live in San Diego. My take on those lyrics about "working it out" to me means that he found it boring with dumb people but found excitement with smarter people, but never forgot where he came from and didnt sneer down at his folks and people of his former town. Your mind gets expanded in clulture, but doesnt mean youre better than the ones who may be more ignorant due to never travelling much outside their small town. To me, thats what it means by "im smarter than that." If one sneers down at their old town folks, that makes them just as ignorant. Therefore, he "worked it out." Thats just the way I take it from personal experience and why that part resonates with me.

Peter Gabriel was doing work with Pink Floyd helping them put together Dark Side of the Moon, Gabriel helped a lot of other musicians throughout his career. I love his use of synth in this tune and the bass is spot on.

Oh additionally, there's more raw musicality in this one song than in every mainstream song I've heard in the last 10 years combined. Same for Sledgegammer, or basically everything bands like Queen or Pink Floyd ever wrote. Why else are millions of people watching reactions to 30+ year old music?

You gotta get meta. He's not speaking as someone dissatisfied with small town life. I was from something smaller than a small town. A village. Without a store, a post office, even a freaking stoplight or billboard. And yeah, I went to the big city, for a while. He's not mocking those people. He's mocking the insecure ones who absolutely need to let everyone know that they're better than their small town pasts. You need to hear the irony in everything he's saying. There's nothing wrong with being from, or living in, a small town. But the "narrator" of the song (not Peter Gabriel) obviously thinks there is. "And the bulge in my big, big, big, big, big, big, big, big, big, big, big, big, big, big, big, big, big, BIG." -What do you think he's referring to?

But, see, one can grow up in a town that's bigger than all others, in the u.s. and still feel the living is too small. Therefore one goes to where the living is grand. Consider a certain politician, born in Queens NY, who moved to Manhattan, NY. He wanted to show off all he could, but does not love most things he has. And he wanted the Biggest House (not in size, but stature) he could own. But, look at what happens, in the end. I call Big Time a foreshadowing of a Real person, we all know.

...but among other things the "So" album was the most commercial oriented music material that was put together by Peter. His Pervious albums were more Progressive Rock/ ethnic /art rock. Charisma Records and Virgin Records more or less pushed Peter to be more mainstream .....and to go "BIG TIME".
