I didn't know the real meaning of this song in my twenties when I just started listening to Peter Gabriel. But the song somehow comforted me.. Time went by, I faced my battles with depression, loss of self worth, self destructive thoughts.. Thanks to internet, i learnt about Annie Sexton and the 45 mercy Street... Now into my fifties, I relate this to this song a lot more... These days I wake up from haunting dreams, full of scenes from my childhood and the image of my deceased father standing, staring at me. I never had a great relationship with him and had huge differences in my twenties, lost him early to a heart failure, ten years back, when the bridges started to built back between us and had I started understanding who he was and his real love for his children. I think I understand why this song comforted me then and why it haunts now. I think I understand what it means "looking for mercy"
@LibbyRal4 күн бұрын
No comfort for me. My father wasn't a sexual predator like Sexton's but he was abusive and terrifying. This song breaks my heart, turns my stomach, for a man who deserves no mercy. I had to come to turns that I wasn't to blame and his behavior had no defense.
@pablo.romero3 жыл бұрын
This song is based on Anne Sexton's death. She was a poet with a sad life and a sad relationship with her father. Her poem that shocked PG was "45 Mercy Street". Anne Sexton committed suicide, her fifth attempt, in 1974 (she threw down a glass of vodka and went into the garage, shut all the doors, started up the car, and died of carbon monoxide inhalation). She was 46. Anne Sexton's work is very dark. The song uses a brazilian northest rhythm, according with Djalma Corrêa, the brazilian percusionist.

And when people like Peter Gabriel are long gone, where are the pretenders who will step up and fill their huge shoes? Personally, I cannot see anyone waiting in the wings. We'll all just be here on KZbin lamenting their passing and giving silent thanks that we were fortunate enough to be around when they were here ...

This song means so much to me. I have a hard time listening to it now. Back when this dvd concert came out I bought it and was a fresh Peter Gabriel fan. I was not prepared as to what would transpire soon. I was not prepared for the emotion that overtook me. It was in a healing way though. Great art always (most always) is. In a few weeks my father had passed away unexpectedly from congestive heart failure. I was completely naive and had no idea what this meant when the doctor told my mom of his condition. Maybe I was in denial, however as the days went by after his passing I kept listening to the growing up concert/dvd. It amazes me because my father used to take me out in his boat with him and his fishing buddies. I never realized how much that meant to me until after he passed away. His grandfather used to take him out fishing as well. It's amazing how meaningful these small details can be for us. Anyways, Peter Gabriel, I hope you read this comment and know how much Mercy Street means to me.

Good music is supposed to move the soul of the listener....no matter the genre.....for certain Peter Gabriel has mastered that skill.....as have the musicians that play with him...my wife doesn't understand how I get emotional listening to and talking about a particular song or artist.....but that is quite possibly a function of our difference in age as I am 68 and she is "only" 49.....

👍 Me too - and agree about most of today’s current music/artists being 👎. I’m 70ish now, but also have been listening to Genesis since I was much younger. THIS is, imo, a 🌟 performance from a 21 y.o. concert! I admit I never realized 🫡 Peter was originally a member till now, as I knew Phil Collins had been (and frequently listen to him - MORE now than in the past).

💞 Beautiful vocal/instrumental 👏 performance AND meaningful lyrics! Although I’m 70ish, each time hearing it, I cry 😢 - wishing I could go back to the days when my father DID hold me in his arms. He passed away suddenly @ age 87 (when I was 40) from a massive stroke 28 yrs ago as a previously ‘healthy’ person. I will always regret ALL the many things I never said, told/asked him when I HAD the chance. Lesson learned: Never put off what you CAN do today until tomorrow - there’s only ONE who knows when someone’s time is up!

Mercy Street by Peter Gabriel Looking down on empty streets, all she can see Are the dreams all made solid Are the dreams all made realAll of the buildings, all of those cars Were once just a dream In somebody’s headShe pictures the broken glass, she pictures the steam She pictures a soul With no leak at the seamLets take the boat out Wait until darkness Let’s take the boat out Wait until darkness comesNowhere in the corridors of pale green and grey Nowhere in the suburbs In the cold light of dayThere in the midst of it so alive and alone Words support like boneDreaming of mercy st. Wear your inside out Dreaming of mercy In your daddy(‘s arms again Dreaming of mercy st. ‘swear they moved that sign Dreaming of mercy In your daddy’s arms Pulling out the papers from the drawers that slide smooth Tugging at the darkness, word upon word Confessing all the secret things in the warm velvet box To the priest-he’s the doctor He can handle the shocksDreaming of the tenderness-the tremble in the hips Of kissing Mary’s lipsDreaming of mercy st. Wear your insides out Dreaming of mercy In your daddy’s arms again Dreaming of mercy st. ‘swear they moved that sign Looking for mercy In your daddy’s armsMercy, mercy, looking for mercy Mercy, mercy, looking for mercyAnne, with her father is out in the boat Riding the water Riding the waves on the sea
