Ryan, you're not alone. I cry every time i hear that song as well as countless others of Peter's compositions. I have heard them all hundreds of times over and seen him live many times and he puts so much feeling and emoti9on into every song that you are drawn into the sentiment and emotions within the lyrics. This is one of those instances where the orchestra absolutely brings the song to a new emotional level, enhancing the lyrics in a way that surpasses the original. I think his intro describing the purpose of the song is important to hear, as well. A brilliant piece when presented in this way.

I agree with you wholeheartedly. Peter Gabriel solo all the way. There is something so deep and spiritual about Peter. He draws you in to a place that feels familiar. He has such a almost gravelly voice and a vulnerability that calls to your heart. I love him and have enjoyed following his career since he left Genesis and I hadn't missed one of his tours. He is amazing.

The re-hashed version that appears on PG’s Birdy soundtrack is lovely too. That moment in the studio version at "that you build with flesh and bone" where Peter's voice turns to ice... the music does turn hopeful with "I will do what I can do", but it's just so chilling. His voice is so full of warmth and bitter icy cold when he chooses. Amazing vocal control.

"World Beat" is a term that was coined years after Peter introduced Third World music to the First World. I refer to his 3rd and 4th albums as simply African influenced. Furthermore, when Gabriel created the WOMAD festival around 1980/81, he brought the West the entire world as our equals -- no longer the "Third World". Bless him.

Ryan, I think I know what you're getting at with the Peter and Phil debate. Phil's talent is writing catchy accessible songs. He's going to give you what you expect, great melodic music and an upbeat, uptempo concert and that's fantastic, and we all love that especially now right? right. With Peter, his music requires something more, a deeper dive if you will but not so much to turn you away from the music but just enough to keep you increasingly more interested and involved. Peter is more an artiste, crafting moods, taking you on a journey, performing & becoming part of the songs themselves through the music and lyrics as opposed to just singing them. That will become more evident when you watch the "Secret World" video. That type of entertainer is perhaps what gives Peter an edge. Granted it's 2 different styles and both have their place in ones music journey but I'm with you, I enjoy discovering what Peters going to do next.

Your points are well taken. Can not disagree, but will take exception on one point. That is: taking you on a journey, becoming part of the lyrics. Phil inhabits a song, he feels the lyric and puts you there with all the pathos and joy. They both do. Which is why early Genesis was SO good. It blows me away that they performed together and all the other talent in that band. Crazy.

@@rk41gator all very fair points. Well done Ryan I thought the live choice for this was perfect and would have been my choice also, I saw Gabriel on this tour with orchestra to be honest I was apprehensive at 1st as only seen Gabriel with full rock band but this show was awesome, I took my son who was only 16 then to this show it was his 1st time at seeing Gabriel and it converted him to a fully blown fanboy. During the show there were moments when you could hear a pin drop and then the sweel of the orchestra and Gabriel's velvet voice rising up made me cry like a baby, to see this other side of Gabriel with all the atmosphere, emotion, Charisma and humanity he has always had you can see why he stands on the shoulders of giants, a true artist and pure genius. Your reaction at the end of this song spoke a thousand words and is the reason I love this guy so much but be warned there is a lot of fun and energy to come but also more tears, a very special song for me which makes me blubber like a good en is Father, Son which you will prob get to in the future my god that song gets me every time. Your 'Ice Cream' analogy is perfect. You can love both. I have the highest respect for both talents. Peter is definitely more avant guarde or esoteric. Phil more soulful and, maybe, accessible. Both hit their spots with high impact. Both would be incredible in concert, but for shear entertainment value, Phil Collins hits it out of the park. But for one concert, it is no question, GENESIS. Music from 2 exceptional albums there, Ryan...and very moving. It's interesting comparing Peter and Phil's journeys. Phil, after his wonderful solo debut, fully embraced the commercial music market. Peter only did on one occasion which is his next album SO, the success of which helped fund his more left field and world music projects, achieving critical acclaim if not commercial success on the same level that Phil did.

Don't know if you are aware but one of the female backing vocalists (the dark haired one) is actually Peter's daughter Melanie. She's done a couple of tours with him now. Also, the Secret World Live video is the definitive live performance (him at his peak) but it doesn't have a load of stuff from the first 4 albums. It has some but mainly stuff from fifth studio album (the 'biggie') "So" and follow up album "Us" - which features the track Secret World. I've seen Peter live twice in London (where I live) - brilliant! Totally enjoying your journey with you. Still recommend a visit to Steve Hecket debut album "Voyage of the Acolyte" (waaaaaay back in 1975) at some point

Saw a great version of this on British TV. There's a Sunday morning programme called The Andrew Marr Show, the format being a political discussion, followed by a pop song at the end. This one had William Hague, former Tory leader, and a couple of press reporters. When they introduced Gabriel at the end, ( with a string quartet and piano,.daughter on harmony ) I guess they thought he was that weird guy who had a big hit with Sledgehammer,..don't think they were expecting a song about Political Imprisonment in South America. It's worth a prvt view.

Perhaps this has been written here before, but this is a song that benefits greatly from looking into the background of the song; what it's written about i.e., Chilean political prisoners. The orchestral version makes an already powerful song that much more powerful.

The closing verse is a good example of the fact that you can't translate everything one-to-one into another language and then sing it. On his German album the text has been changed a little to love the rhyme and flow of the text: Wir haben dich verlor'n. Ohnmacht... Trauer... Zorn... Und ich versprech' dir jetzt, ich tu was ich kann. We lost you. Fainting ... grief ... anger ... And I promise you now, I'll do what I can.

In the West, (Europe, Canada, and the U.S.) historically, we have had this idea that police and the government have limits on their power, and you can't have your "civil rights" trampled on. Due process. No illegal search and seizure. Innocent until proven guilty. You can't be held for questioning for longer than some pretty short period unless you're charged with something and there's a warrant for your arrest, and warrants aren't handed out like candy on some neighbor's say so. If you are arrested, you have a right to a speedy trial, you can't be imprisoned for too long while you wait for a trial. You can't be coerced (much less tortured) into making a confession of guilt or into testifying against yourself. In America, the constitution says that the government has no power that is not specifically granted to government by the constitution. But over time, we've grown complacent about these basic rights. And during the last 40 years, we've been slowly losing them. Since the Patriot Act, for example, if the government decides to label you a "terrorist," you don't have those rights at all. This means that when Trump (or Biden) is in power, the FBI or Homeland Security or any other government agency in the executive branch's control, could accuse Biden (or Trump) supporters of being "extremists" and therefore "terrorists" and hold them for questioning for an indefinite period, and torture confessions out of them, and so on and so forth. No due process. No Miranda rights. No Habeas Corpus. During the "pandemic," our legislature here in Oregon gave our governor the right to bypass habeas corpus if you fail to cooperate with the state's "Health Authority." (There never used to be any "Health Authority!" Only "Medical Advisory" boards!) They haven't retracted that power and they probably never will. Once a power is given, it's almost never retracted. It is clearly an unconstitutional power! Yet it was granted. One right that was absolutely not granted by the United States Constitution or the Oregon State Constitution to any government is the right to make medical decisions for people. Yet these events took place recently: A woman's daughter, who had cancer, was faring very badly, and the chemo therapy her doctors had proscribed was wreaking havoc with her body and her immune system but was not shrinking her tumor. She seemed to be on death's door, so she removed her daughter from the doctor's care, and started pursuing alternative treatments. Her daughter quickly got much better, and her tumor begin to shrink substantially. But the state medical authority got wind of this woman's actions, and decided that failing to follow the doctor's proscriptions represented a danger to her daughter, and, no doubt, more importantly, it represented defiance of their authority, and felt that they needed to make an example of her. Her daughter didn't want to do what the doctors wanted her to! She wanted the same thing her mother did! She took her daughter and fled to Nevada, but Nevada is almost as blue as Oregon, and so when an Oregon judge made the jaw dropping, constitution burning decision to authorize action, Oregon officials were allowed to go collect her and her daughter from Nevada and return her to Oregon where they put her in prison and put her daughter in foster care, where she was sexually abused. And they forced her daughter to undergo an unwanted surgery. I'm not sure how her daughter is doing now, I hope she's doing alright. Cancer rarely ends well for long. I understand she's out of prison, and with her daughter again, but has been forced to agree to sign over medical power of attorney over her daughter to an agency of the state. I'm a bit old, but if there were a militia forming somewhere, with the intent of marching on Salem, I would be sorely tempted to join. Because the right to make medical decisions for myself and my children is not a right I'm willing to lay down. They will take it from me over my dead body. The CDC and the NIH do not own science! But they are trying to lay claim to doing exactly that, and they are doing everything they can to silence all opposition. Our pediatrician has lost his license because he presented third party validated clinical evidence from his own practice that certain vaccines may be associated with substantially increased risk of certain medical problems to the state medical board. Instead of listening to him and advising everyone of his findings, they accused him of foul play and of spreading "misinformation" and suspended his license. The attacks on doctors and scientists who disagree with the CDC and the NIH are not science based, they are nothing more than smear campaigns, and their malevolent action is nightmarishly horrifying. There is no "medical authority" in a free country. Clearly, our country is no longer free. So here we had in our own beloved "Free, Western Democracy" what was essentially a political prisoner. I fear the worst is yet to come. It is hard to see how this ends without bloodshed. The practice of imprisoning political dissidents comes out of the Dark Ages and from places like Communist Russia and China. It was China's influence in Latin and South America that led to the rise of totalitarian socialist regimes that have sprung up in those countries and have produced this sort of thing there. But now because of how far left the democratic party has swung, I fear we will soon be seeing a whole lot more of that sort of thing right here in America.

comparing Peter and Phil just isn’t fair. Phil had a massive career… he’s great in his own way. but Peter was just way more experimental. it still amazes me how many of his experiments turned out brilliantly. including these orchestral versions… I’m usually skeptical of this kind of combo but he makes them work… they often turn out as quite different pieces. for another eye-opener, check out his orchestral version of Bowie’s Heroes.
