A great piece of nostalgia! The young man on that commercial already had a big career on TV ahead for him. Peter Jennings was one of the greatest news imports ever - although a furniture commercial could have been an affront to current journalistic standards. I guess you had to be a Jack of All Trades if you wanted to survive, even prosper, on TV in the early 1960s.

Then, in 1963, he entered television journalism - and the rest was history.

Mike Wallace started out as a radio announcer in Chicago in the late '40s {under his real name, Myron Wallace}, announcing such programs as Mutual's "SKY KING", and delivering Elgin-American commercials- by transcription- on Groucho Marx's "YOU BET YOUR LIFE" on CBS radio during 1949. He eventually went into TV {1949's "STAND BY FOR CRIME", from ABC's Chicago affiliate} before coming to New York around 1950, as a genial host on daytime shows [with then-wife Buff Cobb] and a game show panelist...

That was a Canadian commercial, probably from his days at CJOH-TV, Ottawa. The store is in Orleans, an Ottawa suburb, and he called the sofa a 'chesterfield' which is common Canadian usage.
