Haha, Im from Bolton and went to the same school as Peter Kay. One of my best friends is from California, he had to read my lips to understand me when we first met. I can talk normally now at full speed, took time but he gets every word now. Its funny watching Americans listen to my accent.

In the UK you dial 1471 on the landline to see who the last caller was. You don’t need a caller ID screen on the phone as the automated voice tells you the number.
@Simon........... Жыл бұрын
But useless though when they have to hang up first before you can dial it and find out who it is 😭😅.. plus at one point you had to pay BT to call 1471

Everyone has a cell phone so the CIA, FBI, MI6, Chinese can track our movements, monitor our banking and listen in to our voice & text conversations. I remember when they first came out. Size of a house brick, weighed a ton, battery lasted about an hour, reception was crap, texts cost money. But it was like having a Star Trek communicator and was cool. Today, I really hate my cell phone, I leave it behind every chance I get and never use it for anything BUT talking or texting. Great reaction again. Good job.

I hate texting, I would rather a 90 second phone call than 10 minutes of text tennis. With texts, you think the conversation is over and you can get on with work, then the thing beeps again with another question Grrrr! I've had a mobile phone continuously since 1989 and sometimes I wish that they were never invented, these days mine gets switched off at 18:00 and stays off until the next morning, it remains witched off over the weekend - this is very liberating.

I was watching a Millenial on YT the other day and he felt constrained to explain how, "in the old days" (and to his astonishment), a phone was attached to a house! I wonder how he would have survived before the Internet was a thing...

It is strange to we "Older" folk to have to try and explain to these younger people about our generations phones. Recently I was with my daughter and grandson to get some plants from a Garden Centre. As we were entering the indoor plant area, there was an old fashioned (I cant believe I just said that) red phone box. It had been rigged up with some shelves, and was filled with trailing plants. I pointed it out to my daughter and she was as enthralled as me to see just what one could do with a phone box with a little imagination. My grandson could not accept that this was a phone box that we used before mobile phones came along. He had no idea at all that we had to go into this red box and place money into the slots before we could use an "Old Fashioned" black phone.....He thought that we just went into this box and used our mobile phone, and the box was there to give us some privacy.

As a teenager in the 70’s the only option was to use the phone box. Try calling your girlfriend and the parents answer saying she’s out. That was it until the next day or day after that!

In the UK if you made the call you paid by the minute. So these long phone calls and a phone available to the kids just didn't happen... Mobiles and mobile plans changed that significantly. But pre-mobile kids didn't use the phone. They went out to see the person or waited to see them next time...

In days of yore before modern transistors the phone signal could be drowned out by noise, so far away places did sound far away. calls from a phone box were expensive but also inconveniently used up your loose change, you could avoid that by signalling with a couple of rings and hanging up.

Kids the whole world over are introduced to smartphones at an early age. I now live in the Philippines and our three year old nephew takes his Mum’s phone from her and logs onto KZbin for Pepa Pig or whatever by himself. Our 11 year old niece has got the latest iPhone and can literally do anything that the phone is capable of. Interesting to hear you say that you prefer texting to actual calls, I would say that most people these days have adopted this preference - not wishing to speak directly to anyone. It’s the modern world and we all adapt to what everyone else is doing…pretty sad really, but there is no sign of this juggernaut stopping.

Yup it’s the same here all kids have smartphones, our kids would have our old ones but as they got older would want the latest iPhone etc and ask for it for Christmas. I think my kids were about 9 or 10 before we gave in, it’s true it’s pretty much how they all communicate so the point my wife would make is that they would be left out of the the social groups without one, which is true. Although we have experienced the bullying that can go on, only my daughter and the bitchyness in her early teens with other girls. One thing, until smartphones whatever went on at school, you got home and left it behind for the day but now it’s continuous, mind you it’s the same for adults and work - your boss or office can contact you 24/7, one of the reasons I’m now self employed!

Most of the time my mobile (cell phone) is on charge at home. If I never had to text or make a phone call ever again it would not bother me, if I find myself in a group of three people, great the other two can do the talking. Social media is anything but most of the time.

I feel very sorry for the kids that don't have a phone or have an old phone and feel left out. What a horrible environment to grow up in. It makes everyone feel insecure and antagonistic towards everyone else. Not that long ago kids were just kids, its so very sad.

In the UK we NEVER had to pay for Caller ID! You guys pay ridiculous amounts for Cellphone stuff. Let me give you an example. I bought my phone outright, not on a plan. My monthly tariff is as follows: Calls - 5,000 minutes. Texts - 5,000. Data - 2 GB And the cost? £12.34 ($15.61) per month. 🙂

Not everything we say represents the entire country. We did say it is just us. I know lots of people that are either way. It just goes along with our shy nature. I don’t feel I have a lot to say on the phone. It makes me feel awkward. I’m more all about business on the phone. “Let’s meet at 7 at this place” done.
