I feel the film Hook starring Robin Williams, Dustin Hoffman, Julia Roberts, Maggie Smith, and Bob Hoskins, was more of the book version rather than the Disney animated version. In Hook they mentioned certain things and had locations such as the home underground from the book version

Do you think it’s a possibility to capture all those themes and the lapsed time within a ~2 hour movie? And would you like the character to be a more tragic person than originally depicted in the 1953 film?

I think if we get the Snyder cut it could work 😜 Nah that’s a good point tho

That’s the paradox of Disney. The books have so much more wisdom, character development, emotion, grit, and growth behind them it makes the films almost insulting to watch. Mind blowing sometimes but would you ever read them if Disney didn’t make them so massive? I believe you could fit all that in. Maybe what Disney did was appropriate for the time but these movies are a stupefaction for what the books are trying to teach. A great example is the jungle book. Read the first 65 pages tell you get to the white seal then watch the movie. The *book* has so much more behind it and it easily could have been covered sub 2 hrs. You look online it says it was a good move to make the tiger what he was in the movie and not kill him off early but the movie concludes naturally at the point the book does for the relative story. Disney is idiocracy. But would you ever be interested in it if it wasn’t made so simple and magical? Ultimately, now at least the movies are to get a kids mind engaged and the books are for adults. So watch them read later and learn from the real story I guess. But the source material is so much deeper than anything in today’s entertainment you’d think the populous has lost their mind.

I love the idea of a more melancholy portrayal. Imagine, a live action departing from the animated film! Haha. (I'm excited for the Mulan one. It sounds like they went a different direction for sure.) So many great points here! I've read the first story about Peter as an infant, but I didn't realize there was more to the original novel. I'll definitely have to check it out! Thanks, Jen!

What Disney bought wasn't the book it was the play ( to have the rights) So that's why it's different Based on a play

I can understand Disney staying away from darker themes in the 50's, all of their movies with "dark" moments from the 40s ("Pinocchio" with Pleasure Island and the Monstro the Whale scene, "Fantasia" with it's dying dinosaurs and Night on Bald Mountain, and who could forget Bambi's mother...), while Cinderella, Dumbo and the South American package films did well. Are they making a live action Peter Pan? If they are going to make live action remakes of their classic animated films, then I demand they make animated versions of "Darby O'Gill and the Little People" and "The Three Lives Of Thomasina". Ok, how about versions of "Mary Poppins" and "Bedknobs And Broomsticks" where the live action parts are animated and the animated parts are now live action? Great video, looking forward to you next video.

Thanks Dan!!! Yeah, I hope that in this one they go a little darker with it because it makes such a well rounded story. That is a good point that the darker ones probably wouldn’t have hit as well back then. I’m super excited for the live action Cinderella to come to Disney + Sept. 1st as I’ve never seen it!!!!

I have read the book last year and was surprised by the violence and tragedy compared to the animated movie. In that sense, it was more “adult” than the movie. Peter was a disturbed individual. Disney has always sanitized its film adaptations. For example, Hans Christian Anderson’s “The Little Mermaid” is a tragic story for the protagonist while the film has a happy ending. I doubt Disney will ever delve into darker themes in its films. I wouldn’t mind watching a film closer to the book, but I don’t think any studio would do it, much less Disney.
