In Peter Pan and Wendy, Disney has managed to suck all the magic out of an old classic, giving us instead a bland, grey, soulless - and sometimes embarrassing - mess.

I'm going to have to doubt that an (assumed) 9 year old has that much understanding of the value of childhood to a developing person without even finishing said childhood. If you aren't completely bullshitting though, that's cool. It's a smart take but it reads as a "my 6yo just said this about the socio-economic crisis" facebook mom who definitely just puts her own takes in a quote type post.

The attempt to give Hook a "tragic backstory" is misguided in an ironic way, since technically, he's already got one in the book. Although his origins are mostly played for comedy, there is a layer of actual tragedy just underneath, as with all of Barrie's writing. Moreover, Hook's backstory is actually relevant to the book's overall themes of adulthood, regret and lost opportunities. Hook went to a famous public school (probably Eton), so his childhood was probably defined by discipline, pressure and traditionalism. His decision to become a pirate is a radical attempt to escape the stifling world of his youth, seeking freedom through chaos. Unfortunately for him, he is too late. The values of his childhood are by now so deeply ingrained in him that they suffocate him even as an adult (hence his pathetic obsession with "good form"). His pirate career is also an act of self-denial. Hook is actually a hypersensitive aesthete with a passion for art and beauty. He's very emotionally responsive and desperate for human connection and intellectual discourse, none of which he can have with his brutish pirates. If Hook had been free to choose, he would probably have become a philosopher or a gardener, not a pirate. In his mannerisms, he switches back and forth between ruthless, calculating adult and frightened, gullible child (the animated film surprisingly captures that perfectly). But besides being very funny, it could also be a result of his restrictive upbringing - he's neither a fully realised adult nor a fully realised child. Enter Peter Pan. The reason why Hook is obsessed with him is not just the casual dismemberment of his arm, although that's definitely the catalyst. It's his "cockiness." Peter is the child Hook could never be, living the freedom Hook will never know - a living mockery of Hook's existence. Feeding his hand to the crocodile just adds insult to injury: what is dead earnest for Hook is just a game to Peter. Peter takes nothing seriously, not even his arch-nemesis. In Hook's final moments, that becomes clear in a way that's almost painful to read. Peter basically wears Hook down to exhaustion while laughing at him. Not because he's cruel - but because he can't comprehend the weight of the situation. In the end, Hook just wants to die. His final thoughts are of his childhood, but this time, he finds himself longing for the order and tradition he sought to escape. Peter Pan has become a monster to him, an embodiment of the chaos he's been trying for as a pirate - but which he now finally realises is not in his nature. With all that said, I think the idea of Hook as a former Lost Boy is actually great - just because it's not book-loyal doesn't mean it's worthless - and it could have been used to support the story's themes. But of course that's not possible if the themes are not there in the first place.

Pffft. Since when have Disney EVER cared about the original source material, mate? If they went by the original stories, for example: The Prince wouldn't kiss Snow White to wake her up, but merely try to take her glass coffin back to his castle so she wouldn't be left out in the woods. One of the servants carrying the coffin stumbles on a root, which dislodges the bite of poison apple from her throat, and she wakes up on her own. Pinocchio would get annoyed and kill the talking cricket, who later haunts the puppet as a ghost, and Pinocchio later gets hanged. Kaa the python would be a hero who helped rescue Mowgli from the monkey city, and later helped mentor the boy. The Little Mermaid would refuse to take the murder escape-clause in the sea-witch's contract, so she would die and turn into sea-foam, then roam the Earth as a spirit for 300 years to develop a soul and go to Heaven. And finally, let us not forget, Walt and his cronies hounded P. L. Travers for the rights to "Mary Poppins," but she didn't want to sell the rights because she was afraid they'd screw it up. In the end, after years of badgering, she finally gave in, sold the rights, Disney screwed it up just like she feared, and she spent the rest of her life criticising Walt and his company for it. And THEN they waited until after she died so she couldn't defend herself, and made a smear movie called "Saving Mr. Banks," where kindly old Uncle Walt (who loves absolutely everybody), played by kindly old Tom Hanks, kindly and gently talks a shrill, stubborn, emotionally-damaged, hysterical Travers into selling him the rights to "Mary Poppins," so he can simply bring joy to the children of the world. 🤮🤮🤮🤮🤮 Even the Disney "Originals" screw up the stories, and the remakes just make things worse.

@@Beedo_Sookcool Eh, alot of the older Disney movies based on folktales really needed to be changed. Because here's the thing; while stories are older than dirt, the art of telling stories varies from place to place and time to time. Alot of our old folktales are superstitious nonsense from illiterate European peasants, collected by the brothers Grimm and others--interesting IDEAS, but the stories are typically primitive as hell and would be boring as shit as movies. Also, what's appropriate for children in the 1900's is quite different from several hundred years prior, where scaring the shit out of your kids so they stay the fuck out of the woods was probably a good idea, even if it resulted in yet more superstitious twaddle and the regular ritualistic murder of single women (the witch trials and inquisitions of Germany were far worse than the paradoxically more famous ones in Spain). Although the changes to the Jungle Book were pretty extreme, to the point of barely getting anything right. Kipling's work was not some primitive claptrap from dirt farmers and didn't need that treatment; I swear they already had a movie with dancing monkeys and just needed a name to slap onto it.

As a woman born in the 80's, what's most sad to me is the loss of diversity and unique nature of female heroines or characters. She-Ra, Xena, and Storm were no-nonsense, mature, bad-ass warriors, but they weren't what you would call 'maternal'. They were beautiful but their powerful natures made them aloof, unattainable, almost ethereal. Beverly Crusher, Ellen Ripley, and Sarah Connor were every-day, working-class women that balanced duty and femininity, and rarely looked pristine doing so. Each of them repeatedly made critical choices between responsibility to the whole and care for the individual, and being mothers was circumstantial to their behavior, not because they were mothers. Rainbow Brite, Strawberry Shortcake, and many of the early Disney princesses won battles through charm, cunning, grace, and care for others. They defeated evil and did battle using influence, not weapons. They were poised and fair, sometimes naive or childish but always kind, and that often bred loyalty from others to win the day. Their adorable or beautiful natures weren't an effect of their kindness, but an augmentation to their charming personalities. Their foes were illustrations of how ugly hatred made people; how pointless and harmful jealousy is. Aeon Flux, Emma Frost, and Selina Kyle were shade-of-gray femme fatales, sometimes heroes and sometimes villains, who had no issue using power, manipulation, or sexuality to get what they wanted. Unapologetic, conniving, manipulative, dangerous, and singularly focused women who saw vulnerability as weakness. Uhura, Scully, and Princess Leia happened to be women. Being a woman wasn't a defining feature; their duties and missions were always far more important. Their personal lives were barely a footnote, and we knew very little about them outside of what we'd see of them in their present. Who they were to the people around them was almost always an extension of the positions of office, authority, or respect that they held. Lucy Ricardo, Sailor Moon (both Usagi and Minako), Starfire, Jubilee, Kelly Bundy, Buffy Summers, and more than half the roles Marilyn Monroe played, were clumsy and ditzy that had a secret cleverness to them that wasn't always evident to those around them. They were often underestimated because of their general manner, but they often solved their problems with an efficient simplicity that escaped most of the other characters, and even ourselves as the audience. Each had an intense hobby and interest, usually to the point of having surprisingly expert skill in or knowledge about. Even the 1953 animated Wendy could fit into this... she was a bit slow on the uptake, there were many jokes made at her expense, but ultimately we realize she's actually quite insightful and empathetic, which is a totally other kind of intelligence. But yeah, it's an honor for all women to be boiled down to 'GIRLBOSS SLAY!' 😞

@@zogwort1522 It's mainly the lack of freedom. Our current societal standard is that of hedonism. Being able to do what you want, when you want, all essentially leading to a more authoritarian take on anarchism. Most modern writers, left-wing as they are, have long since forgone the idea that putting effort into a goal for the long term ends up being more satisfying than immediate pleasure. Hence, motherhood is seen as inherently evil due to restricting women's ability to do whatever they want. "My body, my choice". Quite ironically, Peter Pan is a perfect representation of these people. The writers are right in that females CAN be just as immature and irreverent as males, especially if society rewards them for being such. Modern left-leaning fellows are essentially part of the Lost Boys, never wanting to grow up while missing the joys of a proper adulthood.

Cutting to silence can be impactful if the character is seen as reflecting on what just happened, or in the case of Peter Pan to be on the verge of doing so. Perhaps if Wendy had not interrupted Peter's thoughts at that moment he would have crossed over than threshold of reflection, which in itself could have initiated transition toward maturity. It is somewhat reminiscent of moments of compelled silence in real life, where those present are expected to use that pause for reflection on whatever the matter at that time is.

Most of the writing is all about the moment rather than any sort of cohesive idea. There's never a relationship, just measures of status. There's never delayed gratification, just instantaneous gratification. It's also self-gratifying, it's all about ego rather than actually wanting to say something meaningful.

There's a terrible irony here. Michael Eisner was pushed out of his position as CEO back in 2005 as part of the "Save Disney" campaign spearheaded by Roy Disney Jr. Roy believed his family's legacy was being lost as the Walt Disney Company became more interested in business than the art of storytelling and family entertainment. The final straw was when Eisner pushed for all of the tasteless direct-to-video sequels we all remember from the late 1990s and early 2000s (Pocahontas 2: Journey to a New World, Cinderella 2 and 3, The Little Mermaid 2: Return to the Sea, etc). When Bob Iger took over, he was supposed to fix Disney. Instead, he's doing the exact same thing, but with live action remakes.

What gets on my nerve is that if Disney was all about "diversity" they should have taken notes from the Pixie Hollow series, where they had Iridessa (Black) and Silvermist (Asian). But the main reason these two stood out is that they were given defining personalities, that nobody cared what their ethnicity or race was. And that's what the studio and creators are ignoring: Stop giving your female characters a girlfriend or race and start giving them a personality.

@@KL9702. First off, John was never a founder of Pixar, the founders were Edwin Catmull and Alvy Ray Smith, so clearly you don't have any idea about the inner workings of Pixar. Second, those hugs you claim he was fired for were actually grabbing, kissing and making comments about physical attributes to point that Pixar has people who were deigned to keep John in check. He ruined it with his own desire to sexually assault staff. Third, he only helped write one of the Pixie Hollow stories, Jeffrey M. Howard wrote the first, third and fifth one, Evan Spiliotopoulos wrote the second, Bradley Raymond also wrote the third one, Bobs Gannaway, Peggy Holmes, Ryan Rowe and Tom Rogers were writing the 4th, John only wrote on the fifth film with Peggy Holmes, Bobs Gannaway, Jeffrey M. Howard, Lorna Cook and Craig Gerber, so clearly he wasn't vital to the spirit of the one movie in this series that he had any writing in. The sixth was written by Steve Loter and Tom Rogers. I can’t remember her name off the top of my head but the pixie hollow books also had a prominent disabled character who was a valued and important member of the community. She was a water fairy, she lost her wings in an accident I think? Point is though, she was a beloved character because her presence wasn’t just to be a mouthpiece or an example of like “see how society treats marginalized/disabled people?” She was a fully realized character. I also think when writing the books they probably said to themselves “well we have this society of fairies, which obviously fly. What would happen with one who COULDN’T? How would that change their outlook, how would their society adapt? How can they use their talents in innovative ways to compensate for their lack of wings?” Care was taken when creating the world and creating the character. It wasn’t just slapping a bunch of stuff together and hoping it stuck.

My best friend was an English major and Hook is one of his all time favorite movies so he wrote his final thesis on Peter Pan and its history. It’s common knowledge that Spielberg does not like Hook very much. He’s never been happy with how it turned out. While researching that paper, my friend found an obscure interview with Spielberg back in the 90’s where someone asked what happened with Hook. Paraphrasing, but he said he started out very excited about the movie. He’d always loved Peter Pan, it was one of his favorite stories, he had all kinds of ideas for Neverland, the cast was amazing, the script was good, it had everything going for it, but he said while they were filming, something happened. He became a father. And Neverland changes and becomes kind of horrifying when you become a parent. Halfway through filming, his entire outlook on the story changed and became much darker. It’s why there’s so many tonal shifts between scenes. Halfway through making it, Spielberg started to hate Neverland.

Thing is, telling a story that ruminates on what it means to grow up is totally antithetical to Disney's current brand. They make buckets of cash off of adults who never outgrow them. Their remake factory depends on adults who want to feel like kids again by recycling their childhood with a more adult-acceptable aesthetic. Anything more complicated or emotionally fraught than "generational angst/trauma" is now completely off the table because it's easier to resolve a problem that can just be Talked Out than grapple with an immutable law of reality that is melancholic but also necessary and good in many ways. But no, they could never do that, because that eternal childhood fantasy is exactly what Disney wants you to indulge in. That's why this adaptation shears off a lot of the elements that build up that theme and replace it with "girls can be as cool as boys!"

An adult wanting to feel like a child again would focus on those Disney movies from when they were children, which for a good number of them is the animated classics from the past. They are essentially made to please their makers with the hope the Disney name will make them profitable regardless. The displeasure this invokes in their audience is become increasingly clear at that trend continues. For example were I to ask my niece if she would like to watch 53 Pan she would say no, because the message the remakes are sending is "everything that came before was a mistake, everything was toxic, this version is more pc" then they make the new version garbage and forgetable which puts a nail in the coffin of people rewatching the original, if new version is superior and new version is garbage, old version must be worse and harmful. It muddies the waters while cashing in on the memory of what was, in that way it makes sense why they are doing this, it's a definite agenda to destroy old values and brainwash the current generation. It felt so thankless, uninteresting and unimportant to do women's work and play women's roles but stories like Peter Pan, Howls Moving Castle and Cinderella remind me its a subtler sort of thing that matters an awful lot. It may be underappreciated and thankless sometimes but its still so very needed and being motherly is a role no one else can really play. I'm kinda a cynical shrew but I'm working on it.

Current Disney writer's distain for motherhood is so narcissistic and ungrateful. People seem to treat it like slave work or a prison, stealing away all freedom and God forbid, giving women responsibilities that can restrict their flexibility and lifestyle. Refusing to listen to women who ARE mothers, many of which insist motherhood is the most amazing and important thing that's ever happened to them. Obviously not every woman had to be a mother..... but god damn, show some respect for those who have taken on this important job.

Not unusual. Look at how they ignore the massive number of women who oppose abortion. The small subset of truly entitled and, we'll go back to narcissistic, parents, does not represent the whole. In fact I'd argue more people than ever assume this stuff about the majority of parents because of social media, the way algorithms boost the annoying behaviors of people. But say you get a really talented drama actor for Peter in Hook, like say Tom Cruise (we have to pick a guy would be late 30s in the 90's). You would have a really good movie with the same script. Stay with me here, Hook has a rather dark under tone to the movie, a dramatic and serious undercurrent that while Williams does well with them, an actor who could do more serious scenes would highlight tonally different parts of the movie. Tom can do the more light and comedic acting (he has done it) but not as well as Robin can. As a side note I think Robert Downing Jr. might have a good spin as well, but l digress. The line, "This magic belongs to no boy" rather baffles me. Usually that sort of trope has been set up beforehand with vague foreshadowing or something. It's we're stronger together and can accomplish more by embracing our differences.

“Tiger Lily talks to Wendy about not-romance and they mutually benefit from the exchange” could have actually worked well… I mean, how about they come up with a plan together to solve a conflict with the pirates? talk about growing up and how they feel pressured to become someone they aren’t sure they want to be? Wendy could ask her about Peter’s weird, erratic behaviour, and Tiger Lily could fill her in on how he’s always been like that (maybe with a throwaway line about how she used to have a crush on him but moved on because he can’t reciprocate). Wendy could ask her about literally ANYTHING related to life in Neverland and her people, and then realize she wants to see the world outside her sheltered english life, anything. It could have worked, and carried new themes an all. But no, either girls are lovesick or they say “yes bitch slay”

Captain Hook screaming for Mr Smee while being chasing by one of the most charismatic crocodiles ever created is just by itself a scene I could watch on repeat. Hollywood writers seem totally blind to universal messages. Every culture can understand the concept of having to grow up expect of course Hollywood writers who somehow manage to live in a bubble in the 21st century. I can understand wanting to update the Native Americans from the OG however out right removing them just removes an entire layer to the story. From what I remember of the OG the children were very interested in the other culture and wanting to join in. Hell the lost boys would play with them constantly usually by kidnapping Tiger Lily. I've also mentioned this before but Disney need to watch that Mermaid scene in the OG animated Peter Pan and understand the nature of that scene. The mermaids wanted to play with Wendy by drowning her. You also have the Mermaids asking for a story and Peter remarks about the time he cut off Hooks hand. It's one of the those moments that set a slight darker tone of the story. The way the Mermaids don't even recognise that drowning someone is a bad thing to do shows just how terrifying Neverland is as everything is a game. Also the Mermaid VA at the end of that scene is amazingly well done.

The live action Peter Pan story I enjoyed the most was actually Hook. Yes, I know it's more a sequel than a remake, but it addresses all of those growing up themes, expressing them with Peter himself. His deliberate rejection of Neverland and his embracing living in the real world never quite goes away. He does have the return to the thoughtless life of Neverland but only briefly. His happy memory that allows him to fly is not Neverland but the birth of his son. As a follow-up to Peter Pan, it's, by far, my favorite in that it stays true to the heart of the story but extends it. I do appreciate your in-depth critiques of these movies and shows. I love when people play the racist/sexist card when we aren't leaping with joy in the face of race swaps (black Tinker Bell), inclusion (the lost cultarly diverse children), and girl bossing (Tiger Lily and the "this power belongs to no boy"). But the truth is it isn't these things per say that make us hate these remakes, but it's the force-feed of the activist/feminist agenda and Disney using this as a shield for their mediocre writing that pisses me off. These sorts of tweaks can be done well, but when it disrespects the material, alienates the fanbase, and is solely done to make a quick buck, I lose more and more faith in the studio. Given how absolutely no passion and thought seems to go into making these girlboss characters that get churned out like factory models, it's honestly really disappointing that Disney nowadays seems entirely bent on making all their new female characters ALWAYS have to be overpowered I-can-do-everything-you-can--do-but-BETTER shallow caricatures. While I applaud having strong, vibrant, impassioned female characters that can hold their own, that doesn't mean that they must therefore be carbon copies of all the dudes. You can be feminine and like artsy things and still be amazing. You're allowed to emote and have emotions and be soft. It's not a crime. You can be tough and strong and brave _and_ still have a soft heart and show compassion and empathy for others. The 1950s Wendy was kind, loving, and brave. She could have adventures quite happily with her brothers and embraced Neverland with absolute joy, but she still loved her parents, she still offered songs and stories not just to the Lost Boys but the pirates too, and when all was said and done she still had the strength to turn her back on Neverland's incredible allure and go back to the gentler mundanity of her home in London. It's beautiful. It's like Disney wants their audience to think all new female character reboots must be bland now. It's sad.

In my opinion, the "Captain hook was a Lost Boy" storyline could've worked if they made Hook's character more mad. As in, Hook gets lost at sea after leaving Neverland after having a falling out with Peter. Hook ends up lost at sea long enough to go crazy before being found by pirates and later returns as an old mad man Peter doesn't recognize as his old friend and Hook attacks, Peter cuts off Hook's hand and we have an way of preserving Peter's innocence and Hook's role as the villain of the story.

One small thing I keep going back to is Wendy's line about motherhood: "I dont even know if I want to be a mother!" It sounds like it came out of a political debate about abortions, which is probably where the writers get the sentiment from. Simply change it to: "I dont even know if I *could* be a mother." Equally short, but it would at least lend an appreciation to the implied responsibility, the vast variety of how a mother cares for a child in so many ways, a recognition of the warm fuzzy feelings she still has herself, from the care she got, and the care she imagines giving someday. But we cant have that, thats femininity! Its weak and disgusting! Female characters cant have that!

Had the chance to enjoy this early on Twitter and like to say thanks again for such a through review on the Peter Pan movies. Your commentary really brings to life the depths and ideals these writers packed into this timeless classic. These newer writers are standing on the back of giants and see them as nothing more than cogs in a machine.

I would say this is the anti-adaption in that fundamentally the creators behind this movie disagree with the morals the original story was about and instead of doing the correct thing and deciding not to take part in the adaptation of a work they fundamentally won't be able to honestly portray they want to "fix it" and in doing so disrespect the original author, the story itself and its fans. The problem is currently no one at Disney actually appreciates motherhood. Sure maybe some of them might give some minor lip service to it, but they are definitely the types that wouldn't see being a stay at home mother focusing entirely on motherhood as a healthy choice for women so they have to change what is effectively one of the two core parts of the story and worse yet in doing so they also harm Peter Pan's part of the story by taking away from his unique aspects to give the girls "new and improved" character growth more attention.

Good point. Drives me crazy how people miss that CHOICE was an OG feminist goal. I love my career-gal life (Army vet, no kids) *and* admire SAHM friends raising happy, well-adjusted kids. "Auntie" is fun, but fr: kids that make good choices are better for society than crap I work on. It's gross to devalue moms just because other choices exist! Also this "Be Strong Woman = Do Man Things" is pretty misogynist if ya think about it. And dumb AF.

Yup. By the same token, you get a pretty good read into their lack of values. They know vaguely what they oppose, because they’re supposed to oppose it, but the film is empty because they don’t actually have a value set to replace the one they’ve deemed outmoded. Beyond vague, generic “girls in STEM” type symbolism.
@InDeathWeLove
@InDeathWeLove Жыл бұрын
@@TheLittlePlatoon that’s literally all they have, a vague girls should need no man and also should find fulfillment in a career instead of family. The former though somewhat discongruous with the original the latter is entirely counter to the original’s message about growing up and motherhood as at it’s core it doesn’t respect motherhood as a valuable thing at all.
@InDeathWeLove
@InDeathWeLove Жыл бұрын
@@OverAnalyst I mean do they have any “healthy womanhood” that’s not just act like a stereotypical man? As in focus most of your energy towards your career, have fun and don’t be too nurturing? You can’t be dependent on a man even if he is dependent on you as being two halves of a unit to make it more efficient and thus lower stress and more conducive to raising kids while keeping the household afloat. They don’t have a lot of respect for the traditional man’s role in the dynamic, however they absolutely hate the woman’s role in it to the point where now it actually gets ridiculed rather than respected by the very people claiming to be pro-woman and their choices. That’s not to say we should ridicule women who choose to not go the traditional route like we used to, but we have just inverted the dynamic.

William Thackeray, actually. It wasn't an original line, and possibly completely ad libbed by Brandon Lee, who was always pushing for the character to be more contemplative instead of just broody, which is how the original script made him.

The 2003 peter pan was so good a portraying Wendy growing up even when she was denying it and peter starting to be influenced by it but refusing and rejecting it as soon as he realised what was happening, only wanting to play and be a child. And why didn't they took the same actor for hook and Wendy's father as it is usually done in theater (and the 2003 movie). It has meaning. The father is view as the villain by Wendy and peter and the real villain in Neverland takes his face ... anyway, the 2023 movie critics are the only entertaining thing about it !!

There’s a million good ways to tell a story about how gender doesn’t matter. But the world loves to tell adolescents that gender matters a whole fucking lot, and that’s why it IS important to have stories that show that being a boy is great, being a girl is great, and choosing your own path regardless is also great. If Disney doesn’t like what a story has to say, they shouldn’t tell the story.
