Prey has quickly been hailed as one of the (and by some people the) best Predator film. Even people with reliable taste, like MauLer and the Critical Drinker, have found nice things to say about it. But does it really deserve this praise?

Just to clarify the bison point, as I didn’t make it especially clear in the script: I’m aware it was the vile French, not the Predator; the problem is it makes for narrative clutter given skinned animals have previously served as a device teasing a separate mystery. The point is to draw out similarities between the Predator and the French - which is a good idea - but the delivery is lacking. Also, and more generally, I don’t hate this film, and I do spend a lot of time explaining and praising what it does right. It has some excellent ideas. It’s the writing, characterisation and general delivery, especially in the second half, that really lets it down.

I agree with your point about the bison and similarly understand that parallels as well as juxtapositions between the theme of "predators and prey" the hunter vs the hunted, etc are made (whether deliberately or subconsciously.) The mass , indiscriminate killing of Buffalo and it's depiction in cinema has often been seen as an allegory for the decimation and slaughter of the native, indigenous people of the Americas. This isn't "Dances with Wolves" it's a Predator prequel, so the movie probably isn't trying to dig THAT deep, but thematically I'm sure that the scene could resonate differently depending on your background and experience. Thank you for making these long form video essays, because they are great fodder for conversation 😎👍

@The Little Platoon It is definitely the execution that really lets this movie down. There were some pretty decent ideas in Prey, but they unfortunately mostly fizzed out. If I had the ability to change Prey, one of the biggest changes I would make is to the interaction between the French hunters and Comanche. During this period, European hunters/trappers often had decent relationships with native groups, often trading with them. These guys were isolated deep into the wilderness, and they could not afford to be antagonistic to everyone else around them. What if instead this movie portrayed these two groups as familiar with each other, not necessarily the best of friends, but friendly enough to do business with each other. Then perhaps you could have people from each side start to mysteriously disappear, and each side thinks it's the other that is responsible. This would build a lot of tension, as each side is on the verge of undermining each other, meanwhile the Predator is picking them off like confused deer. This could also be used as a decent reason why Naru's mother and brother don't want her out hunting, because they are genuinely concerned she will disappear as well. Then both groups could start to figure out that it's actually something else whittling away at them, and come together to try to fight it. At this point having the Predator annihilate them would be even more terrifying, particularly if you effectively demonstrated these guys are actually highly effective fighters. This could leave Naru and her brother as the last ones standing to try and defeat this thing. It would be an even more impactful sacrifice if in defeating the Predator, Naru had to directly kill her brother in the process. It would also probably have helped if the Predator actually generated significant terror in Naru. In the original film, Dutch and his team were scared witless of what they were dealing with, which is definitely understandable.

Humans are smaller, more agile, and smarter than bears in combat, especially if they're seasoned warriors. Naru only took on the Predator after it had been severely wounded by many musket balls, spear stab wounds, multiple arrows, and she started the fight with a gun shot to the back of his head at point-blank range. The Predator may have been fighting her with a concussion, and possible weakness from the loss of blood, and slower reaction and movement ability due to muscle damage and trauma.

Had an ungrateful and selfish issue with her brother saving her and at making the kill that she damaged, only for her to do the exact same thing and see no issue. @@Dravianpn02 I would assume the Predator's skull kept the musketball from penetrating his brain, but the shockwave from the impact could still cause a concussion. The primary wound I think should have incapacitated or killed him the most was the spear through the throat from the brother. The Predators flesh would have to be durable enough to keep the musketballs from penetrating his flesh more than a couple of inches to prevent damage to internal organs, in which case the spear shouldn't have penetrated all of the way through his neck. Film makers in general seem to have a lot of trouble keeping injuries consistent with one another. It's something I have to largely turn my brain off to in order to enjoy watching most movies.

The dumbest part of the movie was when Naru realized that the Predator can't see people if their body temperature is low. So she's at the Frenchman camp giving the guy the medicine that lowers body temperature, Predator arrives, she goes to hide behind a tree and the guy tries to crawl away and then plays dead. The Predator looks around, SEES all the dead bodies, SEES the blood trail, SEES the guy who left the blood trail, stares right down at the guy, and decides he must be dead like the rest of them because he's lying on the ground and he's cold. We know this because we're SHOWN THOURGH THE PREDATORS EYES. Meanwhile, Naru looks at what the Predator is doing and comes to the conclusion that IT COULDN'T SEE HIM. When in fact he could see everything, none of the people in the camp (dead or alive) were invisible to him. Naru later takes the medicine, moves 2 inches and the Predator walks right past her. He should've seen her of course because she wasn't invisible, she was just cold, and SHE WAS STANDING UPRIGHT, not playing dead. idk, maybe he did see her just standing there pretending to be invisible, and thought "oh no!, this girl must be retarded" and just left her alone because killing retarded people is not honorable

You mocked the scene where Naru learns how the predator's helmet works but you missed a glaring flaw: She is behind the tree that is being shot. She cannot know that the lasers are aimed at the tree - to her, it's just some bright red thing on the predator's head armor. From her vantage point, she cannot see the dots on the tree and cannot see that the darts are hitting the dots.she can see nothing but a glowing bit on the predator's head armor so she should learn nothing. Then the finale when she magically lines everything up based on knowledge she couldn't have seen, couldn't have learned, and couldn't have understood, was ludicrous. I predicted that she was going to grab his helmet and wrist launcher and wear the things to hunt the predator. At least that wouldn't require her to create a Rube Goldberg ending.

I paused the movie and asked my wife if she understood the instructions and felt like she could now load that weapon properly and she emphatically said no. And she's at least heard of guns and seen them in numerous movies, so she had some idea what gunpowder is, and what she called "bullets" though her use of that word was wrong, but she described the lead shot fairly accurately. The Predator wasn’t bothering her or her tribe so there was no reason for her to go after it. And when she did, she foolishly led her tribesmen right to it where they got butchered. Not to to mention how it was also because of her that her brother was captured and tortured by the fur traders. She never even acknowledges that any of it was her fault or learns from it. I thought the whole point of her mother lecturing her that hunting for their people is not about proving oneself but about survival was to set her up to learn this later but she never does. This whole movie from start to finish was about her wanting to prove she could hunt even at the cost of the lives of her brother and tribesmen, even if they were brainless morons and dicks, and she never goes through any kind of character development at all other than enhancing her skills. And it really annoys me how everyone keeps regarding her as an awesome action heroine and the best protagonist in the franchise when she really isn’t. I think his weapon just shoots forward if the mask and its aiming software aren't present. When the Predator arrived at the bog to have the final fight with Naru, he had his mask already stolen from him - he arrived maskless. Naru hid the mask and made a trap out of it - it activated when Predator began to use the projectile weapon. Predator didn't mean for this to happen, it just switched to mask-aiming without him knowing. But then again, when he fights her brother and gets his mask smacked off his face, he keeps shooting. My theory is that Predators are actually the "wise but not intelligent" kind of aliens. They wield advanced technology, but they're not really -smart-. They're not very observant either - their HUD has to highlight virtually everything for them. And their technology isn't really theirs. Yautja stole it from the Amengi.

@@Lizards_Lounge See I feel this is a little too harsh. As a film, the scenery is great... brings you into the world and feels real with a few exceptions (the burned forest was dumb), set dressings, location choices, shot composition all very well done. As a predator movie what they got right: A story of survival. Now they lost it in a major way at the end but for 90% of the movie the main character was running for dear life and ONLY survived because, rightfully so, she was not a threat and was shown to be the prey in every encounter. She learned the weakness of her enemy and used thinking to survive rather then dumb luck in most situations. This is important for a predator movie and why it did so much better then most of the other sequel stories. Where they failed is how they dealt with her interactions with the French trappers, and her ending encounter. Both of which are straight out of "modern strong woman" cinema standards very likely forced in by the studio. The other point I see is from the marketing it was made to be a "woman fighting against oppressive men" but thats not what I got out of it. She could have been a young male to young to hunt and the story would have played out exactly the same. She was not held down for being a woman, she was held down because she wasnt ready and the hunt with the lion showed she WASNT ready so she had to man up and try to be better. This is why its a flawed but decent Predator movie. The essence is there and they got the heart of it RIGHT... so I give them credit.

One of the weirdest things for me was the choice of ending: she returns to her tribe in triumph, carrying the Predator's head (and the translator's pistol), throws it at the feet of her elders, and smiles as she is named warchief. what First and foremost, her recklessness is to blame for no fewer than FIVE of the tribe's dead. The four hunters that went out to find her wouldn't be there if she hadn't baselessly decided that she knew better than everyone else and ran off on her own. Her brother wouldn't be dead if not for, again, a similar reason. If she had a character arc, I thought it would have involved the apparent glamor of being a hunter and warrior being just that: a glamour, or an illusion. The way she was 'training' earlier was so laughably out of touch with what you'd actually need to know as a hunter/warrior that it was comical. Pointlessly parkour-kicking off trees while chasing a rabbit? Throwing a hatchet? Making a scuffed version of Skorpion's weapon from 'Mortal Kombat'? But then, not only did this baffling non-training actually appear to work, but when faced with all the death and destruction that it took to bring down the Predator...she slices off its head, paints herself with its blood, and leaves the brother who sacrificed himself to save her to be eaten by scavengers. There was a lot of plot armor along the way, too, but I'd say the second most disappointing character was the Predator himself. He's a big, dumb monster that _constantly_ stumbles into traps and ambushes, and then survives because of a combination of insano-tech and having been buffed to the point of insanity. He's an incompetent, cowardly idiot that would have died a dozen times over if he weren't given such an insane and unreasonable amount of strength, speed, agility, and coordination. The cowardly part comes from his tech, particularly when he decides to activate his Amazon drone C4 delivery service to seek out and autonomously murder the rest of the trappers. It fell into the same category of 'haha, look! reference! u liek reference, yes?!' that the pistol was. The mines got used in previous media when shit was _serious._ AvP2's Predator used them to clear out xenomorphs in the town's sewers because he was there to _eradicate_ them and take care of any other traces of extraterrestrial stuff. And the pistol was given to Danny Glover in Predator 2 after he successfully slew a Predator in single combat, and it had a custom nameplate with both a fancy European name and a date that fell within the Golden Age of Piracy. The comics had more on it, but I could infer all I needed from the context it was given and the appearance of the gun. But I guess it belonged to some randy French trapper that happened to speak the local language, sorta-wounded a Predator, and then...well, I guess the tribe isn't long for this world, because it still ended up on a Predator ship by the 1990s.

The natives did use "as much as they possibly could" but theres a lot to a carcass that is just purely unuseable. It is basically an example of "in the kindgom of the blind, one-eyed is the king" - when we take a look at less than stellar history of Predator sequels (basically everything after Predator 2)... Prey looks like a masterpiece in comparison. My biggest problems are lack of good personality of its characters and most importantly the fact that Predator... is out of character - the bloody thing does not exactly act like a haunter most of the time, it acts like a mumbling idiot - going into traps, basically brute forcing its way into direct combat like a video game boss being like "I have enough HP to tank this shit". I mean, in the original, Predator was very strong and difficult to kill indeed, but it relied on subtle tactics until the ending - honourable duel, basically. Speaking of Predator's honour... the part with the bomb baffles me - in the original movie, it was implied, and confirmed in later lore that suicide through a bomb is basically a way for a predator to preserve honour when mortally wounded. Not to mention, the bracer that Predator in Prey discarded was shown to contain some sort of computer vital for decent portion of its equipment... Another thing is the mask - the skull mask of the new Predator is cool... but it was heavily implied in original that mask contains apparatus making it easier for Predator to breathe - it is an alien being, it is logical for it to come from a place with different air composition - open mouth design of mask in Prey therefore makes little sense... Oh... and mask was more firmly attached to the head, so it being knocked out easily by protagonist's brother also makes no sense - you know, considering it doubles as re-breather for an alien creature that tends to run a lot and jump on trees, you don't want this thing to fall of easily, yet it does in Prey. And while we are pointing lore inconsistencies - Predator's cloak was shown to not function when wet, it short circuits... Yet in Prey it has no issues working when drenched in river water and bear blood, despite this Predator's gear being more primitive than in original. It was an okay, flawed movie... but it is treated like second coming of Christ, which honestly is overhyping and overselling it horribly.

I don't buy this explanation - considering that we are talking about advanced space-faring species that needs the damn mask to breathe well and... see well. This seems like a bunch of intentional design flaws that do not add up with advancement levels of the species. 3. Predator was almost completely drenched in bear blood in the same scene and that didn't make the cloak fail - that is plain and simple inconsistency no matter how you look at it. 4. Not every predator is the same, true - BUT unless I missed something, I don't quite recall anything in the movie suggesting that this one was any sort of youngblood. Well there's a difference between myself and the Thunderbird.. The thunderbird according to mythology has always been described as a giant bird or flying creature who's flapping wings could create lightning and wind. It was said it would fly at the front of storm clouds. Pretty much for all intents and purposes it was just a giant large flying bird that had the capabilities of Ghidora, without the creating hurricane ability. In my myth I'm not really a cryptid and i don't share many similarities to the Thunderbird. Being a full creation god kinda puts me higher up the food chain. Plus no one ever really found anything that shows me being a cryptid. I guess maybe you could say i might share something with the now extinct terror birds perhaps.

I thought the skinning was just part of the process. The green berets from the original that were skinned Dutch and the team find are “completed” so to speak. The guy hanging up in the building where the shoot-out happens in the beginning of 2 was just recently hung up. After Harriman, Danny, and Leona walk away the predator pulls the hanging guy out of the shot (presumably) to finish “cleaning” the kill in order to take its trophy. Genuinely curious how skinning them means they’re not worthy, that would mean the predator would’ve just ignored that person instead of killing them. Just a discussion, no hate intended here…

@@TheMitsinga I was always under the impression that’s how he takes his trophies (if given the time). We do see him just straight up right out a spine and skull in part 2 but it looks like a skull, as in skinned and scalped. So I just assumed it was a rush job. Even in the first one it comes back to take is it Poncho or Hawkins body, one of the two so he can get his trophy. There’s a Predator video game for like 360, pretty good. And it was canon at the time. You could string up enemies hanging like in the movies and when you took your “trophy” the resulting corpse would be skinned. Any prey “not worthy” would most likely be ignored like the unarmed woman from the first one. Or Leona (because she’s pregnant) in the sequel.

What I enjoy most about this film is the cartoon at the end. While the gun is a call back to the end of Predator 2 and implies she got her entire tribe skinned and strung up to the nearest tree, the cartoon makes it blatantly obvious that's exactly what happens. Girl boss literally got everyone killed. I appreciate that level of honesty when depicting the average success of the average female warrior.

The beginning of the movie really worked against it, in my opinion. The movie goes to a decent length to build up the setting and the society the main character lives in, but it's totally undermined by the choice of main character. Given the realities of tribal life, the main character wouldn't have had the time to learn much of anything about hunting as she would have had her own set of responsibilities, and more than likely, would have already been with child given her age. The thing is, this could have been remedied if they just shifted the main character's background to being an outsider to the tribe. They could have kept her as a woman while also realistically explaining why she has the time and knowledge to hunt as an outsider might naturally be excluded from daily life.

Better. Not surprise me a commenter can write a better story than the "professionals". They probably wanted to force the good old women stop staying in the kitchen movie trope and this only works if she is part of the tribe. BTW in my country thousand years ago the womens were not fighters but they were capable of riding horses and hunting in case the men have to go to war. I don't know too much about the indian culture but I don't see why somebody who living in the nature can't live from the nature and this includes hunting. Do you remember Apocalypto? If they get grabbed, they're all but doomed, so their strategies and tactics have to be very, very different than that of a man going 6'-3, 220. Finally! Finally a DEFINITIVE review of this overrated schlock of a prequel. Yes I'm a hardcore Predator fan and I believed prey was really overrated AF and had one of the dumbest lamest predators in the franchise. I was ok with both Amber and her brother but there were seriously too many conveniently silly moments that happen just to make her triumphant for the sake of it! Thankfully a great review like this hits almost all the problems I had with this flick! He misses pointing out the fact that the Predator invisibility is inconsistent with the first in that it never glitches when it gets hit by water. And it's weird that this Predator's medikit is MORE advanced than the other films!! But other than that, this is a very solid review unlike all the others that overpraise and overrate this, makes me wonder if those people even know Predator at all, even if they claim to be so-called fans. The biggest laugh of the century are those that claim prey is superior to the original!! The only bit disagree with this review is him claiming this franchise should stay dead.

They were believable in their respected roles. They went through hell and built themselves back up to face their foes. This girl Naru isn’t that. The very first dialogue spoken, apart from the very bad acting of her brother, which immediately pulled me out, gave way to all of the actors talk like it was a scene in a highschool having little sister 'want to hunt'...could have been done so much better. but they half-assed it. they needed her to "smash the patriarchy" and they way that was done was have her act dismissive of them, challenge them, be sarcastic to them...all with ZERO consequence. she was both a 'war paint-wearing' warrior AND she was this dissenting "i do what i want, no man can stop me" they wanted their cake and eat it too. so rather than have her disobey the tribe in secret...they have her disobey every member of the tribe AND be rewarded.\ the warpaint is a good metaphor theyre using here to show she don't give a fck, she literally wears her disdain for the patriarchy on her face...a face matched by groans, eye rolls, idnignity and otherwise malcontent for the majority of run time....all of which directed "at the patriarchy" but hey, if she showed "fear or shame" of disobeying the tribal leaders, that would "send the wrong message to all the little girls that THE PATRIARCHY OWNS YOU.." and just like Rey, even tho she was stronger and better in all the ways than her opponent, who's been training to kill their whole life...she STILL needs to "cheat" to win. the old stick em when they aren't looking trick. this is the writers laughing in your fcking face, taunting you. Its them saying they know the only way the could ACTUALLY win is to do it this way...but we're gonna also pretend the length of the film that she was "just as strong or stronger all along" the end when she comes back holding the head and the village clap like she's fcking beowulf was just a perfect way to end this crap film, totally detached (npi) from the reality of what would happen. but the film just needed to end, again, on a metaphor of us all clapping the arrival of Odysseus' long awaited return, with the head of medusa

Just gonna say this movie was mediocre at best. Beyond the fact that the natives somehow managed to damage the Predator multiple times by attacking in close combat, something every other movie has established is a suicide move, I mean Arnold tried it and got smacked around for it, it's painfully obvious the movie gives Naru kid gloves as some how the Predator either forgets how strong and fast he's supposed to be or she survives something she shouldn't. That choke slam alone should've crushed her neck and back. Plus Naru isn't an interesting character, Dutch and Mike Harrigan from Predator's 1 and 2 were engaging multi-layered characters. Naru is essentially "I wanna hunt and prove I'm a badass" that's it. There's nothing else to her.

On the surface it seemed like they had the basic elements to make a decent film but I gave up on this film after 30 mins due to the poor plot and lack of characterization. Something that would have kept my attention would have been to have the natives speaking a native language, like in The Northman. I'm sure if anyone had that idea it was torpedoed by the studio because they think Americans are too lazy to read subtitles. And they're probably right.

would this be an example of undeserved heroism? if Naru hadn't been so aggressive to hunt the Predator, when her brother allowed it until she'd proved herself unreasonable, hostile, cruel, and dishonorable. In telling her to stay inthe village because her brother's experience says she's not ready for whatever she wants to hunt. Is that really misogynistic? No, he's her brother, he's family, seeing her nearly die fighting the mountain lion had invoked her tribe's honor code. Family first. Instead she hunts not for survival, or for experience, but for praise, praise and nothing else. In the thick of the action she is shown to be cruel; harming others and leaving them as bait, is selfish to the point of arrogant. Unwilling to ask for help, and in turn unwilling to help others, even if they are weak and defenseless.

@@rosumparat correct. She is the predator of this moviue, with trophy hunting and all. Tht is why in the "healing" scence they show how similar Naru and the predator are. That is why I disagree with a lot points made in this review. The movie does somethign really different in showing us the predator this time actually being the prey by making a mistake in misjudging Naru early on. The rabbit scene establishes how he rates whatever creature the predator encounters into the "predator - wold" or "prey - rabbit" category and ignores the rabbit, because the wolf his higher on the food chain, therefore more worthy of a trophy. The wolf is the alpha hunter is this chain. He misjudges Naru because she is physically weaker then other humans, so she is considered lower on the foodchain, he forgets to take into account that humans became alpha predator because of their smarts, not their physical attributes.

Why is Hollywood so bad at “Story”? There used to be a rule with sequels, where you write it so it will still make sense & work, if a member of the audience didn’t see the original. That’s why Predator 2, did what Predator 1 did as far as keeping the Predator hidden & mysterious until the protagonist figures out what he’s dealing with. Predator 2, while not as good as Predator 1, still works in the same way. Hollywood doesn’t understand what makes a “Hero” & they don’t understand courage, especially when trying to write a “Strong Female Character”. The most courageous & heroic characters that people root for are typically “the reluctant hero”. Ripley, Sarah Connor, John McClain, etc. these are characters who are incredibly relatable because they are put into situations they do not want to be in. They have to overcome their fear, & do things above & outside their baseline, to typically protect or save people they care about. These are interesting & relatable heroes for an audience. They try to write modern “Strong Female Characters” with the primary antagonist as the “Patriarchy”, who are they writing this for? They write Females to replace Male heroes, without understanding what made the Male Hero, Heroic in the 1st place. If the Men in her tribe had been slowly picked off by the Predator and she goes to help, not because she wants to, but because she has to, to help her Brother, & she believes she most likely won’t succeed, but goes anyway, that’s so much more powerful and, well, heroic.

14:31 The reason the Predator was going after small animals first is because it was its first time on earth. After he found humans, he stopped killing animals. I just finished this movie and I audibly said, "This is the Simple Rick of Predators." The Protagonist got SUPER lucky very consistently. The orange flower touches your tongue and your heat signature is instantly gone from head to toe? He can track a blood trail, but can't see a grown woman standing directly in front of him as he moves forward? He gets her with his shield, but she falls directly between two rocks, stopping the shield with perfect timing. I mean, I've heard of plot armor, but come on! Why does this Yautja have arrows? They have space travel, invisibility, layered vision, instant wound sealant, but no plasma caster? Why does this Predator seem to have no grasp for how his Arrow Caster operates? Why did he just kinda drop his spear, essentially just handing it to her, when the pupper nipped at his heels? He literally bodied a grizzly bear earlier and now a little ole pupper nipping at his ankles is going to make him go into full retard spasm attack? SENSORY OVERLOAD SENSORY OVERLOAD. I liked Prey, but... Naru got her brother killed. He died so she could save her dog. He was wounded and instead of helping him get horses to escape, she went back for her dog. When he came back to save her,she wasted a chance to attack by trying to use a gun she only had a few minutes of training with. She'd seen the other hunters and her brother be effective with their weapons. The trappers had guns and were wiped out. My main gripe is that the movie seems to imply she was right. The Hu ters didn't want her coming with them. They had earned their spots on the hunting party. She hadn't. She uses creativity to help balance physical weakness. She couldn't kill the bear or the lion. She only killed the Predator because it was wounded and considered her useless. Her tribe lost it's best hunters and is left with her...

Among the many things wrong with this movie, the thing that sticks out for me is how all the men were incompetent. Pocahontas apparently had more knowledge and skill than all the hunters combined. The men in her tribe would realistically have a whole lifetime of experience doing what they do. In this movie she JUST started learning how to do anything related to hunting. And she kept spotting irregularities that the men should’ve noticed first. She repeatedly pointed out how things were suspicious. Yet, all the men would shrug their shoulders and dismiss her. They presumably had a lifetime of fighting experience and were killed immediately. She (again) barely started trying to do what they do and was able to out fight and out smart the predator. Pocahontas has essentially little to no experience hunting or fighting, but she was better than everybody else. Girl power, I guess🫤.
