Every year we should tell Peter Yarrow and the group how much we love him and what he stood for (and light a candle, even if not Jewish).

Peter Yarrow can... well, just look up what he did to that 14 year old girl. Sorry to have to bring that up.

Such an amazing song, and still so relevant. Just go through the comments, you will see every few years people saying the same. And here we are, November 2024, still remembering “this is the burden, this is the promise, this is why we will not fail”. I think people who have not been through hard times sometimes can lack this important perspective, the knowledge that, yes, times can be dark, but that just means we know we will not give up.

Second, third, fourth, and a millionth... never give up on life and liberty. There are many possible metaphors for this spirit, but perhaps my favorite comes from the autobiography of a 17-year-old German girl who on Christmas Eve of 1971 was the sole survivor of the disintegration of the airplane in which she;'d been a passenger. She woke up on the ground after falling 10,000 feet, still strapped to her seat, with no sign of anything around her but Peruvian jungle. Having learned from her parents that if lost in the jungle one should follow water downhill, she did so, with no food and minimal clothing, and eleven days later found the only three living humans for many more miles. Along the way she thought: "Is there any sense in going on? Yes, I said to myself, summoning all my powers, "you must keep going. Here you'll die." ("Als ich vom Himmel fiel," Juliane Koepcke)

I saw that Mary Travers was born on this day (November 9) in 1936. It’s early for holiday music but we need this song now more than ever.

Thank you, and here is my prayer W mourn in the morn, Alongside the forlorn, Who know either love nor joy , We plead for your love Come from above To hearten each girl and boy. We pray day and night That the beams of your light May penetrate gloom and pain And renew a delight In the knowledge that You, God Still reign. ♥️🧡💛💚💙💜❤️

It is rare for me to feel so inspired by a song these days. It used to happen to me a lot when I was younger, but at my age it rarely happens. Not this time. I am so unbelievably moved by this song. It makes me dance, it makes me cry, it fills me with hope. I love this song so much that I just can't stop listening to it.

Thank you for posting this KZbin keeps taking it down- especially Peter's narration. He wrote this and it was the first public performance. Little Red School House chorus sings with them..They also sing with Paul on Night Before Christmas, but that isn't available I got to be in the audience waving my light..It was quite special. PBS used this for their Holiday fund raising concert for 15 years.

There was one thing that the candle lighter was doing wrong. The UNLIT candle is supposed to tilt towards the LIT one. Not the other way around. I am not Jewish, I am christian, still love the song though. On Christmas Eve, I have a church service where our final song is sung while holding candles. We were taught to light them that way to prevent injury from melted wax.

Light one candle for the Maccabee children With thanks their light didn't die; Light one candle for the pain they endured When their right to exist was denied; Light one candle for the terrible sacrifice Justice and freedom demand; And light one candle for the wisdom to know That the peacemaker's time is at hand! Chorus: Don't let the light go out, It's lasted for so many years! Don't let the light go out! Let it shine through our love and our tears! Light one candle for the strength that we need To never become our own foe; Light one candle for those who are suff'ring A pain they learned so long ago; Light one candle for all we believe in, That anger not tear us apart; And light one candle to bind us together With peace as the song in our heart! [Chorus:] What is the memory that's valued so highly That we keep it alive in that flame? What's the commitment to those who have died? We cry out "they've not died in vain," We have come this far, always believing That justice will somehow prevail; This is the burden, This is the promise, This is why we will not fail! [Chorus:] Don't let the light go out! Don't let the light go out! Don't let the light go out!
@carlafelsted55607 жыл бұрын
Yes, don't "let the light go out" amidst the negativity. Besides lighting a candle now and then, identify the causes you believe them and support them--with your time and energy and/or dollars. Lifting them up will lift your spirits. And dialogue with others, not only the people who hold the same beliefs you do but those who can explain theirs without nonproductive arguments.
