It looks like people in the video were asking that only after having seen the trailer. And the original trilogy had very straightforward names. So I can see why. Episode 2 and 3 had very straightforward names so I wouldn't be surprised if George felt like he needed to give it a simple name.

Obi-Wan - young brave man, fanatic of Jedi council, respects his master, but doesn't always agree with him, has some sence of humour. Amidala - very patriotic girl, trying to protect her people, very kind and impactful, uses any help she can find, a litte bit naive. Anakin - ambitious talented slave boy, wants to be powerful, free slaves, very loves his mom. Palpatine - clever manipulator, politician using any resourses to get power. Darth Maul - apprentice of Dark Lord, raised killing machine, full of hatred to Jedi, wants revenge for defeated Sith. Jar Jar - clumsy teen, who is very royal to man who saved him, tries his best to help. Trade Federation - greedy and cowardly businessmen, who want as much resources as possible, work for dark Lord. I didn't get all of this from the first watch, but Star Wars world was even more interesting.

Tom Brearley-Smith Well, they weren't. The films were always supposed to be more "boring" but more ambiguous than a "fun" space adventure film. Why do you think Lucad started the franchise in the middle and not as an origins story? The prequels give far more depth to characters like Palpatine as we see him deceptively climb the ranks and create The Empire. Besides, Episode 3 had plenty of "fun" moments. It even opens with a proper star wars space battle.

But at least Harrison Ford did not phone it in, he was probably happy that he finaly got to kill off Han Solo, and 25 mill and 0,5% of the profits probably helped too, tho Disney forced him commit to Indiana Jones 5 to get that, so will probably phone it in on that one now that he got his money.

+Orin00r - I like it how you saw other people mentioning "Mary Sue" so now you use that term too for Rey. Even though she is not a Mary Sue at all and everything he manages to do in the movie is backed by her strong willpower and fighting spirit she developed growing up alone on a dangerous planet like Jakku. Her being strong with The Force is partly a product of that too + probably due to her relation to Skywalker family. - Death Star again, yeah, so fucking what. It was not the main plot point and goal for the protagonists like it was in OT, it was just an action packed filler while the main thing was going on down on the planet itself. - Captain Phasma WILL do something. This is just a first movie of the trilogy. Not everyone can get screentime in one movie. - What is wrong with crossguard? It is a unique approach to a lightsaber. If they could do a double bladed in EPI, they can do this too.

There is a chasm between the OT and prequels. The OT took itself seriously and everyone, no matter the age, loved the movies. They seemed realistic and serious while having a simple story and characters everybody could relate to. The prequels too often came across as unrealistic, slapstick, and so on, especially The Phantom Menace. People were SO hyped for this movie, I can't even explain it. There has never been a movie that was more anticipated. But then it ends up being filled with Jar Jar, robot enemies with a sense of humor, a little kid who can do things far beyond what he should be able to (because now, guess what, he's Space Jesus), MIDICHLORIANS, etc. It was totally unlike the OT and so much seemed forced and out of place. You get to the end and you're like, "Okay, great, Anakin blew up the droid ship ON ACCIDENT... soooooo, that's it?" It just wasn't compelling. The Darth Maul fight is the only thing holding that movie up.

@@logicaldude3611 Your username doesn't check out, what a bunch of non-sense you wrote. Unrealistic? Sci-Fi? Fantasy? Good one. It wasn't filled with Jar Jar, he had a ~14 minutes of screen time, and was supposed to be revealed as a Sith in the next movies. Ah yes, robots didn't have sense of humor in the OT? Have you even watched the OT? A little kid who can do what he can do, who are you to say what he should be able to do or not? Only Lucas can. Nothing wrong with Midichlorians, they are not The Force, nor did the explanation demystify The Force, it only explained how scientifically The Force connects and interacts with biological beings, but i guess Prequel haters don't like science, too complicated you know? Gotta keep things simple, for the simple-minded. Yeah you got ONE thing right, it was totally unlike the OT, and that is pretty much the only true reason why a portion of the "fanbase" hated the Prequels, because they didn't get their OT V2, boo hoo! Di$ney knew exactly how to milk the dumb part of the "fanbase", by literally copy-pasting the OT to Sequels. Prequels didn't seem forced at all, nor out of place, in fact- they perfectly visualised and captured the charm and the feeling of Star Wars, Lucas went on a whole another level with them, even though they weren't perfect movies, but a truly incredible and inspiring work and effort has gone into making the Prequels, from world-building, scenery, choreography, clothing, physical sets and models, CGI sets and models, general CGI, story-telling, soundtrack, designs, ideas. It is absolutely mind-blowing to anyone with common sense how much effort went into making them, how much passion there was behind it, and all that ignored and discarded by a bunch of whiny and toxic haters that didn't get their nostalgic adventure V2, absolutely pathetic.

You have to understand as well how BAD sci fi movies generally were in the 1970s. Movie studios never liked them or put money into them - 2001 not really being a sci-fi in my mind. The first Star Wars was sort of a victory for the forgotten masses who KNEW science fiction could be GREAT on screen if only done well. There were good tries before Star Wars, but all desperately under-funded and short-changed.

People like Mr. Plinkett (and the many thousands that seem to follow him.. for whatever reasons!??) will claim it to be a million times better than the prequels, but still nowhere as good as the originals.After watching the trailer(s), I am seriously concerned about one thing though. George Lucas was (still is, I assume) a genius when it came to creating fascinating foreign worlds. They were actually so fascinating I dreamt about being able to go there when I was a child.And he was always great in making Star Wars feel not only larger than life, but literally like a fairy tale. As far as I am concerned, these two ingredients make for much of the Star Wars magic [alongside the work of another genius, by name of John Williams - of course!], and I am simply not sure if JJ Abrams will prove to be up to par with Lucas on this field.

@Sonicisbadazz
@Sonicisbadazz 9 жыл бұрын
***** TheMamsies I can respect that it wasn't your guys' cup of tea. Like I've said in posts above, I don't think the prequels--except maybe for Episode III--were as good as the originals either. What bugs me is the people who act like a crime has been committed because the PT didn't live up to their expectations. And the other thing that bugs me just a little is phrases like "likable characters" and "well-written story." I'm not about to say that it's an untrue statement that the original trilogy had these qualities, but I'm also going to say that I don't think anybody has truly nailed down the technical components of these qualities in such a fashion that we can say for sure what they actually MEAN. What does it mean when a story is "well-written"? Does it just mean you had fun reading or experiencing it? If that's the case, then we CAN'T nail down what the term means because opinions vary too much from person to person. While it's not an excuse for writers to just avoid TRYING to write things well for the audience, it's important to remember that there is a DISCONNECT between the screen and the consumer. An entertainment experience has to go through our brains--which will interpret things however they wish to--before we can determine its effect on us. It's not like an electric cable where there is a clear, physical line between two objects. From a purely technical standpoint, the writing is, "Here's an evil empire that is evil for the sake of being evil, and here's an everyday farm boy who's going to turn into an action hero and save the galaxy." I know these movies are from the late 70s and 80s, but it's pretty simple plotting. I also know that it's a little unfair to frame the OT in such a way as there is far more nuance to stories than a basic framework. But the base point still stands. As for the likable characters, I won't disagree there either, but again, what does that mean? What we have here is a very cliched ragtag group of heroes. One is a farm boy who shouldn't be able to do half the stuff we see him do in the first movie given his lack of experience with blasters and danger. Not to diss the story, but if Luke was truly a farm boy, I don't think there's any way he would have made it off the Death Star after getting captured. You might be able to chalk some of it up to Obi-Wan and Han Solo, but not ALL of it. Speaking of Han Solo, he's about as pure mercenary as you can get until the very end of the story, and that sort of character turn is so overdone and predictable that it shouldn't surprise anybody. And Leia...well, Leia is pretty much just a pretty face with a bigger brain than her companions. Once in a while she shows some combat prowess, but most of the time she's more of a damsel in distress with an attitude. Again, I'm not saying these characters are unlikable; I'm wondering WHY it is they're likable when they are technically cliched constructions. And the reason why I'm wondering that is because I think it's rather hard for writers like George Lucas to deliver "well-written" stories with "likable characters" when we can't clearly define what that means. But that's just my take on it. :)

Thank you. It's crazy pills sometimes. The OT were excellent family movies with powerful mythic storytelling, incredible design and great characters. The prequels look good and have quality elements (score, production, locations etc.) but are not likeable or endering especially in the characters and script department. It's like we've lost the sense of classics in society, Pride and Prejudice may not be my personal favorite but it's still one of the most well written books I've read and I apprecaite its impact and history. Personal likes are great but we can recognize great quality and flaws in even our favorites and praise quality in things we aren't as invested in.

John Miller I agree completely. People put far too much of the blame on Jar Jar. Does he suck and is a huge distraction? Yes. But its not there were any good characters either, except Qui GOn (only a little bit though because Neeson actually tried) I actually have always found Portman to be the worst of the bunch. She is so emotionall she makes Kristen Stewards performances in Twilight look like Cate Blanchett by comparison. My point is in a movie with some of the worst plot and character development every put to the big screen its silly to blame one character in particular instead of looking at the movie as a whole.

Dick The Birthday Boy The reason why Jar Jar is so annoying to people is because every other character is a walking piece of cardboard who say all their lines in really stoic, dulcet tones. In that environment, a really goofy comic relief character is gonna stick out like a sore thumb. If there were real, flesh-and-blood 'human' characters in the Prequels, then he wouldn't seem half as bad because everyone else would be reacting to him in a believable way and there wouldn't be such a contrast. To further illustrate my point, imagine how annoying C3PO could've been if the rest of the Original Trilogy characters were wooden, stiff and unemotional.

Jesus Christ. I just wanna slap these people across the face for getting so emotionally F-ed up over a stupid movie. For turning Geroge Lucas into Satan so they don't have to deal with the REALITIES of making a movie like Episode I. "OMG GEORGE LUCAS RUINED STAR WARS! I'D BETTER GO SEE IT THIRTEEN TIMES!!!" God! Do audiences today hold themselves accountable for NOTHING?! How long before we start blaming drug addictions on George Lucas? If you're so utterly devoted to a mythological universe that you feel as though you've been "gutted" when it disappoints you, it's time to find a better reason to live. Put down roots in multiple universes or devote yourself to some kind of real world career or whatever else it takes to keep you from wanting to commit suicide because a movie doesn't live up to your standards. I KNOW how easy it is to get wrapped up in a universe; I devote most of my life to video games and other entertainment. But that doesn't mean you get to blame those universes--or their creators--for destroying your life. GROW UP
@Sonicisbadazz
@Sonicisbadazz 9 жыл бұрын
***** I can understand that assessment. Perhaps I am. But then, who is actually going to call people on stupidity like this unless they ARE a little emotionally invested in people being HAPPIER with their lives? To me, that's kind of like seeing someone get bent out of shape over what amounts to nothing, telling them that's it's nothing, and having them answer, "Well, if it's nothing, why are you getting in my face about it?" If you get on their case about "nothing," it shows that it's actually "something," yes, but to NOT get on their case about it is to just let the idiocy continue unabated. And it's not that I'm trying to control people; it's that I'm quite familiar with what misery is like--I take antidepressants--and as such want to see people happier. But for them to be happier, they need to find ways to get past these things. The human being who learns to be happy with what he's given might not push for greater improvements to what needs to be fixed, but s/he WILL be much happier than those who keep demanding things get better all the time. That's not to say that I think Phantom Menace is a masterpiece. I had fun with it, but I don't think it lived up to the originals. However, I wasn't EXPECTING it to live up to the originals because that was a different era when filmmaking was not what it is today. To me, it's the people who expected so much from it that disappointed THEMSELVES. In order to get to a place where we're happier, in my opinion, we need to find ways to ignore or be suspicious of hype--most of which I believe the fans generated themselves--or give ourselves time to appreciate what something is when it's not exactly what we want. Even video games that I get excited for before I pick them up usually take an hour or two to really get into my bloodstream and suck me in. In short, to be happier with our entertainment, we need to learn to be patient and--as awful as it might sound--lower our standards. The higher our standards are, the less likely we can have a good time when we go to the movies or watch something on TV. Appreciating things for what they are is the path to happiness; getting upset over what things aren't is the path to misery and depression. This is what I believe. If all this means I'm taking this as seriously as the fans of Star Wars do, then color me a hypocrite. But I stand by what I said. If I didn't state these things, I'm afraid some people out there could end up as miserable as I used to be at the height of my depression. I'd rather try to help. If it doesn't work, oh well, at least I tried. :)

***** I didn't delete your reply. I'm not sure why it's not showing up for you, because it's showing up for me just fine. What I'm emotional about is the tendency people have to destroy their own happiness with absurdly high expectations for things. Of course, there are other things that bug me about fans like these--such as labeling themselves "optimists" because they're convinced creators can "do better" when all they're really doing is bitching about their own dissatisfaction, which makes them "cynics"--but that's the basis of it.

So I guess you don't believe in the power of art or culture or that people can want to believe in things that are enormous and enjoy a modern day mythos that is deeply attached to their childhood? Its like that line from Almost Famous where the girl talks about the new groupies who don't get it, how she loves some stupid piece of music so much that it hurts. People cried when the Beatles broke up. Your reply I guess is "Grow up, you should diversify your interests so that you're never vulnerable to one single group or artist".
@Sonicisbadazz
@Sonicisbadazz 9 жыл бұрын
BollocksUtwat No, I understand quite well how powerful art and culture are. Like I said, I devote most of my life to video games. I own 800 of them--not exaggerating. I also love TV shows and lots of movies. So I'm quite aware of the power art and culture can have. But you know WHY I own 800 games? Because I understand how to temper my expectations and FIND the fun in what I'm given. To these guys' credit, they seemed to give Episode I a real chance. They went to see it several times, obviously. But they still seem to have this attitude that some kind of unbelievable crime was committed because they weren't satisfied with Lucas's work. Look at 5:19. Their experience is compared to that of ABUSE VICTIMS. Victims of abuse should be insulted and infuriated by such a comparison. Getting your ass beaten every day by someone you love or claims to love you, or worse yet getting RAPED, versus going to a sci-fi movie with heightened expectations and not being satisfied with it. That's not even the equivalent of "first world problems" compared to "third world problems"; it's turning yourself into a rape victim who is somehow incapable of choosing not to attend a $7 movie for a couple hours. And yes, it IS a bit personal for me because I grew up with a mother that has borderline personality disorder. If that's supposed to be a valid comparison, maybe they should try this one: I know about the power art and culture can have over people. I ALSO know of the power COCAINE can have over people. Maybe we should put the cocaine in jail instead of holding the user accountable for his/her actions on behalf of the drug. Or maybe we should put it on a pedestal and worship it because it's influenced so many lives. The point here is that if your ENTIRE CHILDHOOD is destroyed by a two hour movie, the foundation you built your life on was obviously not very stable, and you can't blame entertainers for your inability to deal with reality. How did it destroy your childhood? Did those hours you spent creating things in a fictionalized universe mean NOTHING AT ALL just because Episode I didn't live up to your expectations? Why? You still played around in that universe and had fun doing it! I've found myself profoundly disappointed by something before, but more often than not I find that it's actually my clinical depression acting up or something else that made my day sour. I don't just blame my inability to have fun on other things. I have to WORK at it. One solution to this problem is to not get so carried away with a make-believe universe that it can make your entire life tumble down like a house of cards when it fails you. I'm not an overly religious person, but that's called worshiping an idol, and it's not just something discouraged because a god takes issue with it; it's discouraged because it's not a healthy way to live. Try building a foundation to your life that's more stable. I don't care how. Put down roots in multiple universes or find ways to keep your house from getting blown away when the winds come along to destroy what you've built. And if you can't do that, at least do THIS: remember that it's just a movie. When you're contemplating suicide because Episode 7 is the worst thing you've ever seen, remember that there are billions of people in third world nations that would be more than happy to receive what you just did. And those people have it a thousand times worse than you do.

+pat442389 Well obvious spoiler warning here: gonna talk about Force Awakens. The elephant in the room should be Rylo Ken using the force to stop a blaster bolt. One of the best scenes in Empire is where Luke tries to pull the X Wing out of the swamp and gives up saying it's too big. Yoda tells him size doesn't matter, then whips it out of there like it's nothing. This should lead to one logical conclusion: If Rylo Ken realizes that size is irrelevant to the Force and gains the proper mental scope, he would be able to stop entire volleys from capital ships in space. He could even stop blasts like the ones from the Deathstar and Starkiller base as well. Skipping the speculation though. He later gets shot by Chewie. Where the hell was his energy bolt stopping stasis powers then? When the rebels swoop in from the lake in their X Wings, what was he doing then? Poe would have been done for, death of one of the principal characters, right there. That's not exactly a small plothole. And of course Force Awakens feels like a Star Wars movie, cause I saw it when I was 5 and it was titled A New Hope. It's the same movie. Opening shot: Battleship over planet. Next shot: Storm Troopers shooting at Rebels. Looking for droids on a desert planet. A principal character is rescued from a base full of storm troopers. Starkiller base is just the Deathstar with a beamsplitter. They go to a cantina. Good guys blow up the big bad planet killing weapon by flying down a big trench. Older mentor character seemingly killed by principal villain. J.J. Abrams heard all the bitching about the prequels and realized "Hey, I can just re-film the first movie with a few tweaks, modernize it a bit and they'll lap it up." And he was right. But more importantly: Star Wars is not just a bunch of movies, there's a huge amount of comics, books, video games, an entire mythology. Star Wars is a universe, and Disney made most of the old one non-canon so they could make their own new canon. What new things does Force Awakens bring to the Star Wars universe that others can build on? A few new characters? A fucked up lightsaber? Yet another bigger Deathstar? (I know I pointed it out as a plothole, but Rylo Ken stopping a blaster bolt with the Force is pretty much the only universe changing thing in the entire movie.) There's not alot new here: One of the Solo children going Darkside was an old plot from the Extended Universe. (Given it's one of the best character arcs, so if they're taking something from the old EU, it's a good choice.) Take a few minutes and look up Jacen Solo. Poe Dameron is essentially Wedge Antilles from the Extended Universe as well. So yah, Force Awakens isn't perfect. Far from it. But I've seen a surprising lack of the same criticism that came from the fans for the prequels.

Yes , there is actually a good analogy to the experience of watching The Phantom Menace the first time --- its like the Brazilians citizens taking in the 7-1 thrashing in the World Cup, one goal and a time.. The first time I saw Jar Jar Binks, I was thinking " why are they putting Donald Duck in a real Star Wars movie ? " And this is a raggae version Donald Duck, and its not a parody of the movie.. ok maybe he's just a bit character. And then Jar Jar just keeps eating up more and more screen space, I was screaming in my heart, STOP IT LUCAS ! WHAT ARE U DOING ?! ... what next ? The whole little boy in a Disney theme park began to take shape as the movie went on .. and the disappointments just kept piling on with the Midichlorian thing, the wooden acting, the pointless politicial posturing, Liam Neeson looking clueless and clearly just pretending to say things he had no idea whats so important about, Queen Amidala just walking in circles in a freaking fashion parade, Ewan Mcgregor struggling to be funny and cool looking while double-handicapped with the stilted dialogues ... Under the watchful eye of George Lucas, every adored thing in the Star Wars universe caught fire and got fried into a charred mess ...

I was a kid and understood all of it and the entire prequel trilogy is better less the fact that they put a scientific explanation on the force. Not to mention the fact that that came up a grand total of like 3 times in the whole series... What people complain about is so insignificant but they don't like the prequels because they were new, it's that simple. They weren't the same old boring actors, boring dialogue. People that don't like the prequels need to just stand back and say hey these movies are cool as hell. The excuse that the movies aren't coherent is bull. I was a child and could understand that all of the bad guys were just the pawns of sidious. And it was one large plan. And as for the quick change to evil of a Anakin that everyone gripes about, it had to be that way. It was driven strictly by wanting to save Padme, there would have been no good way to develop that. When you change a character from good to evil over a series it isn't one event that does that, it's a culmination. This was not a culmination of events, he was merely trying to save his love. It's ridiculous to think that anyone wouldn't have been so quick to turn evil if it meant saving that one person that meant more than life itself to them. As for the CGI everyone overlooks the fact that it literally doesn't matter, they showed a more realistic view in the prequels, the older movies always had 1-5 people in any one scene which restricted the believability so much, there's always 100 people around in the prequels and so much going on and that makes the movies realistic and beautiful, not bland like the originals where you'd be staring at the same couple characters for way too long. The list goes on and on as to why the prequels are just as good if not better. You could name any reason the prequels are worse and I can refute it.
@Saltee323
@Saltee323 9 жыл бұрын
J Reid Yea, but Anakin killed Windu cause Sidious said he could save Padme but then right after, he tells Anakin if they work together they could unlock the secret. Anakin should have been like "Secret, you never said anything about a secret. I just killed Master Windu for nothing." Then when Sidious tells Vader that Padme was dead, Vader kind of questions it then just accepts it as true. But even if it was true why didn't Anakin say, "Dude, you said you could save her from dying!" Vader should have killed him right then and there for lying yet later on Vader just accepts that Luke is his son which means now he knows for a FACT that Sidious not only didn't save Padme, but he was lying the whole time when he initially told Vader that Vader himself killed her. Cause she was actually still alive! And then to find out he had a daughter too? Instead of turning to the Emperor right then and saying "What the fuck dude?" He just says, well if you won't turn then she will. I mean the second he read Luke's mind he should have been like "Holy shit, I have a daughter!" And then been like "You lying bastard!" as he ripped the Emperor's head off. Anyway, these are just a few of the problems I had with the whole story line of the prequels. Plus Obi-Wan says in a New Hope that he and Vader were good friends yet we never really see this. Anakin was always bitching about Obi-Wan and Obi-Wan was always yelling and scolding Anakin. There was no development in their relationship like there was with Luke and Han at first not really liking each other, then developing respect as they shared battles and adventures together. Or the love story that developed between Leia and Han. Han didn't win Leia over by telling her he slaughtered "Women and Children" or telling her how much he hates sand cause it "Gets into everything." Or by falling off a Gondart or whatever that thing was. Or by crying on about how much he hates Obi-Wan and how jealous Ob-Wan is of him. Or by telling her he "Wished he could WISH away his feelings." And so on...

Coming from a guy who was a kid watched The Phantom Menace in theaters. I didn't know what movie we were watching when we sat down in the theaters, but I instantly knew what movie we were watching from the title crawl. Now I was not at all a Star Wars fan at the time and considered Star Wars to be this old and boring movie franchise. When I saw that title crawl I couldn't read I thought I was going to be watching one of these old and boring movies at first because I didn't even know they made a new one, but as soon as the movie started from the look of it I immediately realized this was a new film and it grabbed my attention. I really enjoyed the movie. I thought the special effects were amazing, the action was fun, I found Jar Jar to be funny, and thought this kid Anakin was cool, being a kid myself I could really relate to him. Now I didn't realize this movie had anything to do with taxes mostly do to not having a clue what taxes really were and my inability to really read the title scrawls. It wasn't until about four years later when I had learned to read and re-watched it on DVD, but it was such a minor detail I glossed over it. That whole thing about taxes and politics is just really overblown and just because it's in their doesn't mean it's not a children's movie. Stephen Larner Hrmm, it wasn't like that at my theater here in Portland, OR. My theater sat in awkward silence, and when it was over, no one would look at each other.

+Jeremiah Tothenations Thanks for admitting that lol. You are in good company -- it was literally years I spent arguing that it wasn't even a good film, let alone a Star Wars movie before people came around to the truth. The people who saw it for what it was were around but definitely a minority. These films are viewed entirely different today that what they where when they came out.

+Stephen Larner I was there opening night at midnight. Everyone I was with walked out shocked. We realized Howard the Duck wasn't a fluke. The advanced reviews had been lukewarm (USA Today gave it a C+) but I couldn't believe it until I saw it myself. The next day everybody was talking about what a half-assed movie it was in terms of the character and the plot and the pacing. I saw it two more times hoping there'd be something more to it. Lucas hadn't directed a movie in decades and it showed. People don't bang on about how this movie sucks because they're trying to antagonize someone. It's because they really wanted it to be good and they were massively disappointed at how a series that had become a hallmark of the best that cinema could offer could become something so mediocre. If you love it, good for you - but it doesn't change that no shortage of people who saw it thought it was one of the biggest disappointments in the history of cinema.

Gordo here. It's simple Original trilogy had an adult story and mature themes while the children ate up the visuals and action scenes. The prequels have a shit story, monotone wooden acting and but lots of action and visuals, no shit a kid will like Revenge of the Sith more than Empire Strikes back because he doesn't even know what Empire is truly about.

Looking back, documentaries like this and our incessant bitching about Lucas and the Prequels is what gave us Disney’s disaster. We should have made our complaints about the Prequels more clear. We still wanted the Star Wars universe expanded with the technology we have in movies but still have good characters and scripts like the original trilogy. Instead, Disney saw these complaints and thought that all we cared about was the aesthetics of the original trilogy rather than the world building and great characters.

One of the most tired arguments I've ever fucking heard. George has stated that these films are made for 12 year-olds. Marvel and DC are no different. I was 5 when I saw this film in theaters. I loved the politics. More importantly, I could understand the plot at the age of 5 while 30 something manchildren couldn't.

I have a theory that is kind of supported by this documentary. It was my generation, Generation X, the only one that hated Episode 1 and the other prequels. Boomers and Millennials thought it was okay. Gen Xers were a huge chunk of the film's target audience, and we expected something different. Something a bit dark, cool and more serious. Something hip to the 90s zeitgeist. I expected a bit of a cyberpunk feel, especially in Tatooine. You know what film was a bit dark, cool and hip and cyberpunk-ish tthat same year? A little movie called "The Matrix", it was a huuuge hit compared to its budget, which was way smaller than that of Episode 1. Its visual effects were lauded as revolutionary, while Episode 1's were mostly ignored, even if they were arguably better. Us Gen X-ers were very skeptical, cynical, and were very, very wary of consumerism and propaganda. A film like "Iron Man" would have been laughed at back in 1999. Films like "Fight Club" and "Election" were greenlighted by major studios, and acclaimed by critics, even if they flopped at the box-office. Lucas should have done some market research, and some screen testing, to gauge Gen X-ers reaction to the film. He could have balanced the film's whimsical aspects with some cool and darker stuff, and he would have a more positive reaction to the movie. Instead, he took the cool and dark stuff like Darth Maul, and killed him off almost immediately. Kids loved The Empire Strikes Back, they would have loved a cooler, darker Episode 1 anyway.

I've seen a rough cut of the Force Awakens, in my dreams - it was crap. I woke up and felt like dying, so I watched the trailers again and told my subconscious to go fuck itself. The new movie NEEDS to be good, for Star Wars' sake, if it fails then it's not just a bad movie, but it will kill Star Wars! The first movie was called a New Hope, this one really is a new hope.

You don't even know the half of it... I was there and lived through it. And it really was a happening back then. I am not even American.. I am from a small town in Finland. And it was the first and only time back then i ever experienced that theater that jammed packed as for SW Ep I. Because it had been 15 - 16 years since ROTJ.. But a lot of books and lore and video games that tied in with the story etc... Omg.. It was just going crazy. And then it started, we watched it, and came out of the theater like.... Wtf was that..
