This is the final vlog from our North Island NZ road trip that we shot a couple of weeks back. We've been to Rotorua many times before, but there's always so much to see and do in this city renowned for its fascinating geothermal activity. Rotorua is located in the Bay of Plenty region in New Zealand.
En route to Rotorua from Gisborne, we decided to make a quick stop to check out Lake Okataina but it wasn't much longer before we finally arrived at Redwoods Treewalk. This was something on our 'must do' list for Rotorua especially since there was a special on where you could do both the day and night time walks for $30 per person (normally you would have to pay for each walk so $60 per person).
Redwoods treewalk is a unique tree top walk suspended high up above the forest floor and takes roughly 40 minutes to cover the course. We recommend going later in the afternoon so that you can enjoy both the day and evening views as the sun goes down. It's quite a different experience at night when all the lights come on too. You'll want to line up relatively earlier for the night walk as the queue can get pretty long if you go too late.
Redwoods Treewalk
Address: 1 Long Mile Road, access off Tarawera Road, Whakarewarewa, Rotorua 3010
Hours: Monday - Sunday 9:30am-8pm (up to 9pm on Saturdays)
Rotorua is famous for its geothermal activity, hot pools, mud pools, and geysers and there are a few main places where you can check this out but Peter's favourite to see all this is Wai-O-Tapu. Here you can see acidic green lakes and the massive champagne pool where the natural colours are very vivid and striking. With 3 different walks you can do around Wai-O-Tapu, you can easily spend around 2 or so hours wondering about.
Wai-O-Tapu
Address: 201 Waiotapu Loop Road, Rotorua 3073
Hours: Monday, Tuesday, Friday, Sat & Sun 9am-4pm
Closed Wednesdays and Thursdays
Something we really enjoy doing in cold weather is going for a soak in mineral hot pools. We find it's a great way to relax muscles and joints. An awesome thing about Waikite Valley Thermal Pools and what drew us to it is that it has private hot pools that you can book for 40 minute time slots and that also gives you access to their public pools. Best of all it's only a few bucks more than the general admission price and pools are drained and refilled daily.
Waikite Valley Thermal Pools
Address: 648 Waikite Valley Road, Waikite Valley, Rotorua 3077
Hours: Monday - Sunday 10:30am-8pm
To wrap up our time in Rotorua and our North Island road trip, we went to Saigon '60s for some delicious Vietnamese cuisine. We love Vietnamese food and were very happy to come across this place. Highly recommend their spring rolls! It transported us right back to Vietnam.
Saigon '60s Vietnamese Cuisine
Address: 1205 Fenton Street, Rotorua 3010
Hours: Monday - Sunday 11am-8:30pm

It was an amazing experience and we're a bit sad at the end of this roadtrip. We were even looking at ways to extend the trip but we were running into bad weather so made the call to come back to Auckland. Will be back at it again once the lockdown in New Zealand is over 😁✌

That food looked delicious as usual. Large portions. I hope you and your families are staying safe. Thank goodness you're in a country that has real leadership to handle the covid crisis. Hey Peter and Yen!! That's cool you're going to Rotorua! We haven't heard of any of the places you've been so this has been a beautiful adventure. Love your drone footage!! We would LOVE to do that Tree Walk! $19.50 USD is a great price for this type of excursion. The extreme altitude experience would be fun too! We have some gorgeous Redwood forests in California.. so it's so beautiful to see that in New Zealand. They did a lot to make sure it was sustainable and ecofriendly for sure! Love that you can check it out at night too, and so beautiful all the lights!! We would do the night visit for sure!! That geothermal hot springs.. we bet that sulfur is a big punch to the sinuses LOL!! That is definitely a large and deep hot spring and very affordable to visit! Love you went to a place you could have a private soak!! So glad you had such an awesome experience. That Pho spot... amazingness!! Pho and Bahn Mi are our favorites for Vietnamese!! Thanks for taking us with you, and look forward to the next adventure!! Lots of love to you guys!!

Hi Peter and Yen. Great info on your videos! My husband and I will be on a cruise ship to visit NZ in a few weeks. I 've watched your Auckland & Christchurch videos and got some good ideas on what to do there. On the day when we dock at Tauranga, we have from 6am - 6pm to do some excursions. There are 3 things that we would like to do but can't find any tours that include them. Since you guys have been there for a few time, could you give us some suggestions on how to arrange my visit there? We would like to visit Hobbiton, a Maori village and soak in a thermal spa in a limited time frame of 6am - 6pm, but of course needs to allow time to be back at Tauranga port by 5pm latest. Is hiring a car or Uber an option? Thanks in advance for any suggestions from you.
@PeterandYen
@PeterandYen Жыл бұрын
Hello, Uber would be ridiculously expensive so I would avoid that. Hiring a car would be your best bet to make a customized trip. It might be a bit difficult to fit everything you want it too because you will need to drive from Tauranga to Hobbiton which takes an hour then another hour to Rotorua. Good idea to check the opening times since you arrive quite early but if you keep to a tight schedule it is possible to do all three. Good luck and have a great time 👍

@@PeterandYen Hi Peter, we (four of us) will be visiting NZ, both islands in mid Nov. Looking for a Rav4 hybrid, any rental company you would recommend. Starting in Auckland to Wellington and fly to Christchurch on to Queenstown. Thanks for your assistance. On your Vietnamese adventure, after visiting the country and then back to NZ, how would find the Vietnamese food in NZ comparing to the local ones in Vietnam. Have you and Yen gone to Malaysia or Singapore yet. Any plans?
@PeterandYen
@PeterandYen 2 жыл бұрын
We don't rent a car in North Island since we live there so not sure about that one but for south island we can recommend Snap rental as they are the most competitive in price. Vietnamese food in Vietnam is in general far nicer and cheaper than New Zealand but there are a few really great spots in Auckland like try it out that have incredible authenticity. The problem is fresh herbs are very expensive in New Zealand. We've made quite a few vlogs from Singapore but unfortunately covid happened just before we could go to Malaysia 😅
