Best explanation - yet ... and, a very good question regarding VO2 measuring devices. Great inverview.

We need accurate portable devices. I’m in Hawaii and the closest lab is 2500 miles away in CA

For an average consumer, the Samsung Watch or similar is good enough for VO2 max for the simple reason that it's immensely motivating and shows a relative value. For me, when I started a longevity project, I started at Vo2-max X and ended up at Z. It means that I know that I've had a baseline, and I know I did progress. I've checked the tables in the studies and what I got, and it made sense. Bear in mind that the watches are updated all the time and that the tech and software are built according to studies. Any discussion about this will, as science, be dependent on the brand, the underlying studies and lots of other parameters.

Yeah well $6000 for the portable, I’ll stick to a lab test for $200.

Where do you go for a lab test?? A drs office?? Gym? I really want to do this

Well, the VO2master can be fairly close to lab equipment VO2 measures IN THE LAB...but once you are in the field & subject to the vagaries of outdoor conditions (most particularly humidity) you should expect greater deviation than 50ml. Especially if you're taking measurements at an indoor pool at the end of laps. I cringe when I see that. Still, the VO2master is a fantastic bit of kit it's just that to take truly consistent measurements with it you need truly constant ambient conditions.

Yeah, they are sponsored by Vo2master with Kristian Blummenfelt & Gustav iden. I don't think they actually use that data. It's just marketing.

A proper lab spiroergometer with O2 & CO2 measurements cost ~30k€. There is no way this device can be reliable. There is a validation study on pubmed of the vo2master having a 10% +-accuracy in measuring vo2max. That's about the same as calculating vo2 indirectly.

Well, are we going to get a follow up where Peter shows us his data and his thoughts on the V02 Master, because you know he bought one after this LOL.

It’s like 6k, so most people are not going to buy it. Considering a test in a lab is like $150$200. Also I’ve been tested in a lab a few times and my Apple Watch and Garmin are within 1-2 of the lab test so I’m good with that. 55 lab test and 53 on Garmin and Apple Watch

Resting heart rate has about a .9 correlation to age adjusted VO2 max percentile within the ranges of importance and is even higher if you eliminate a few bradycardia outliers. If fact, you don't even need to do an age adjustment to find your age adjusted VO2 max percentile if you just use resting heart rate. VO2 max tests activities can give substantially different results depending on the mode, say a bike for someone who mostly does swimming.

They need to come out with something where you dont need to wear a mask or the mask has to be made alot better, the way it is right now its BRUTAL.
@DavidBrown-ts2us10 ай бұрын
I think they can, you can go in a sealed room which is measuring the O2 & CO2 changes in the whole room
@gregstewart910 ай бұрын
run a mile or a 5 km. if are getting faster over time your v02 max is probably getting faster

I'm a bit worried that this will send off a trend where we have PT's and other people with no sufficient education, selling cheap, shitty tests with unreliable devices all over the place.

Why isn't mile walk test sufficient? Unless you're a professional athlete, the precision is unnecessary (and unrealistic).

@@DavidBrown-ts2us do you even know what "the rockport mile walk test" is? You can estimate vo2 with sub maximal effort. See also Cooper 2 mile run and Uth (2004)

@@PO-cx2ej you can estimate Max vo2 with submaximal exercise.

@@johndavidkromkowski816 yes there are formula but for like 80% max for 20 minutes on bike. Nothing that ressembles a walk. You are not even above LT1 during a walk.
