Holy shit this is the most rhythmically intense pianist I've heard since McCoy Tyner. And as people have already said, Kurt's solo is insanely good. Making Inner Urge sound super soulful.

Kurt's playing on this is so good it veers into hilarious. Beyond being able to be processed like ordinary playing. Reflexively is the only way to take it in. Or like someone's playing an absurd comedic prank on us; tricking us into believing what we'll all have a good chuckle about later after we're told it was just a put on. I mean, at 3-4 points during his solo I busted out into uncontrollable laughter 'cuz it was just so off the charts no other response made sense. Talk about kickin' it up a notch. I mean gimme a fuckin' break. Enough's enough already. Just ridiculously beautiful playing. Kurt: You rarely disappoint. Thanks. You are the man...

@@tristancata9146 Yup... I particularly like the drummer's playing here. He's got it goin' on :) If interested, I just saw new vid go up here on the tubes w/ Beets and an orchestra at The Hague playing an arrangement called "Chopin Meets The Blues," or something like that. IMO worth checking out. Not great necessarily, but a worthwhile attempt at the occasional "third stream" thing...

Kurt’s note choices here are one of the most amazing things. It’s HARD to play melodies that don’t sound like nonsense on this tune, even if you’re following the changes exactly. He seems to pick some subsets and substitutes that sound just wonderful over this.

It seems like he also consider the last eights chords in pairs of two. He often phrase over the first and second ones, then the third and the fourth, fifth and sixth, and seventh and eigth. Wich mean working over two chords separated by a minor third down, and then working over theses intervals of chords and move them one semi tone ahead once you've reached the second one. For example C A then Bb G then G# F etc... (written as enharmonic material)

he's a hog-addict.
@leguitaristicfrank7 жыл бұрын
maybe it comes from the HOG, i dont know this device enough to tell. I remember him talking about a pedal call the Attack Decay by Malekko. I'd guess on that since his tone in this particular video doesnt sound HOGed.
@JohnsDough19187 жыл бұрын
Fillipe Madureira It's definitely the HOG. It's the only pedal that can completely eliminate the attack for fast, normally played runs (others like the Slow Gear or Attack-Decay need silence between notes to track effectively). The HOG slightly processes the guitar signal digitally, giving it it's distinctive sound. I wish other pedal companies tried their hand at designing attack-decay pedals, without copying the HOG or the Slow Gear.

Also Check out Kenny Wheeler and Henderson with 87 big band on KZbin as well as Joey Alexander with Grenadier and Kendrick Scott. I listened to his quartet stuff w/ Sonny Clark quite a bit back in the day, and his Feelin' The Spirit record. I think this solo by Kurt is exceptional. To point out another moment, as you did, where I think I hear an influence is the short phrase from 3:58 - 4:00. I can't not hear that as Holdsworth every time. Beautiful...

Disaster starts at 05:40, the bass player starts to play half time loosely countering the drum, while the piano insist to play straight on walk, from 06:49 the piano starts to play cross time, and from that point the ensemble kind a loose on time, no one try keep the beat, except Beets :p and still the piano try to make sense of the phrase by playing something non linear and from 08:15 probably try to talk to the drum and bass, still great example how the pro can handle the play situation!
