The town was first established in 1000 AD with the name St Peters burgh. In 118 AD an Abbey was built. Henry VIII closed all monasteries and abbeys, but in 1541 it became a Cathedral and Peterborough became a city. In 1643 Cromwells men desicrated the Cathedral, destroying paintings and carvings. In 1671 the Old Guild hall was built, making the Cathedral square what it is today.
