Thanks. Now I understand why sail planes use water ballast: Ballast gives higher wing loading, i.e. higher speed. If conditions get bad at the end of the day the ballast can be dropped easily. Then even light thermals will give enough lift to stay in the air to return home.

HI Peter. Thank you for making this video. I am a paramotor pilot and my weight is around 71 KG. I am planning to start paragliding. Now my question is i m planning to buy "Air Design - Easy 2" glider and the sizes are small size "72-92" (weight range) and Medium size (85-105). Which wing size is sutiable for me. I m new to paragliding and i never did paragliding in my life since i started flying paramotor directly.
@PeterHoldy
@PeterHoldy 2 жыл бұрын
Hello , as you are 71kg then you add around 15-17kg (paragliding kit , wing + harness , helmet rescue parachute) on top of your weight and you will be around 88kg all in. So best glider for you will be Small size 72-92. Is best to be on heavy side of your wing 🙏 Thank you for watching, take care and have a fun 😁

Great video Peter just what I needed. I have a question from the purview of one that is planning to be airborne in about 2 years. I live in the NC mountains USA and there is not a paraglider anywhere in sight. For now I want to learn as much as I can and continue to search for a group on my end of the world that can point me to some real training. There are no launch points in the dense Appalachian Mountains so I plan on going to the east coast of Florida where there are what seem to be long stretches of flyable dunes, averaging about 30 feet/9meters in height. I keep a regular check on wind direction and speed for these locations at different times throughout the day. Around noon they average about 12-15mph. So back to my question, based on your principles of "light and heavy" loading and given that I am just beginning the journey, what type or brand of wing would be good for dune flying and beyond given that I weight only140lbs/64KG butt naked? Thank you for giving us all the chance to go along on your great adventures and please don't edit out too much, it wouldn't be nearly as lifelike and fun. Watching the Tenerife paragliding trip now!
@PeterHoldy
@PeterHoldy 4 жыл бұрын
You should be fine with normal wing and normal weight range. As 12-15mph wind is just perfect. You can check my video where i flying similar dunes you just describe. Name of video is " having fun Weston-super-mare" So you will be able to see how it looks like to fly low dunes 👍 i have big dream and plan to fly around the World. I know i can do it but i will need help as i can not to do it on my own. Looking for sponsors, people who will help my editing videos, and people who will help with paperworks and other stuff. 🙏 hoping for the best 🤞

Hi Jim, apologies if you already know this but thought it’d help if not. Have you tried an app called ‘Paragliding Map’. They have an online version. Like you say there aren’t a lot of places marked on the map in NC but there are a couple. Have a look www.paraglidingmap.com the markers show where the flying sites are in that area and are split up between launch sites and landing sites. There may be more sites that aren’t marked on the map but once you meet other pilots you’ll quickly find out from them where to fly. Good luck

To fly in the middle or low weightrange have only advantage when the thermals are super light and the weather too stable , its easy to escape from the ridge or from the top of take off. Other hand just a disadvantage, lots of collapses, slow speed, more risk! So be on the top 95% of all the time. If you fly on very top the reopening can be much faster in case of collapse. Fast reopening much better than a slow one, my opinion, even causes less hight loss. airgabor76 on youtube. Cheers, G

My Epic medium has a EN range 75-95kg but with a motor DGAC rating it is acceptable to be 75-115 KG. I weight 80kg when free flying but with a motor, fuel, reserve ect I am right near the top 115. When just gliding (off power) it feels very similar in a straight line, but if you pull brake and weight shift into a turn it dives and accelerates into the turn much more! Perhaps it would no longer pass as a B rated wing. The DGAC does not test characteristics so we will never know what it would score.
