This is by far one of the most haunting songs I've ever heard. If you don't know the story behind it: House Reyne of Castamere, whose sigil was a red lion, as opposed to the Lannister's gold lion, once rebelled against House Lannister (that's the first part of the song). Tywin Lannister led an army to Castamere, where they slaughtered every man, woman and child of House Reyne and utterly destroyed Castamere. "Now the rains weep over his hall, and not a soul to hear", could also be read as "Now the Reynes weep over his hall, and not a soul to hear". Not only did Tywin obliterate this house, he did it so horrifically that he left the Reynes weeping in the afterlife. When Tywin returned victorious, he commissioned this song as a reminder of what happens to those who stand against the Lannisters. It's said that from that time on, any time a house started to forget their place, all Tywin had to do was send a court singer to their Castle to perform this song and they would fall back into line. That's why it's such a big deal that they played it at the Red Wedding, Tywin was sending the message once again that you don't mess with the Lannisters. Oh god I'm going to enjoy Season 4.

A lot of people are saying that a deeper voice suits this song better, and while I agree (in the sense that the song is meant to be a threat), I've found myself loving this version so much more than the threatening versions. Peter's voice gives it the haunting story-telling sound and I love it!
@HJ_Extravaganza10 жыл бұрын
A lot of people seem to forget that, in story, "The rains of Castamere" was sung at NORMAL weddings too. Which means it's not some song that "Must" be sung with a deep voice.
@beegibbs10 жыл бұрын
Exactly! :)
@BalooSJ9 жыл бұрын
***** This version works perfectly fine. I interpret the song as more of a subtle threat... by commissioning a beautiful song that will be sung far and wide by bards, Tywin Lannister spreads his propaganda far more effectively than if making the song sound like an overt threat.
@TheGamerozi7 жыл бұрын
Bri Routhier I know right. Me too. This version is way better than deep voiced versions in my honest opinion.
@MIZZKIE2 жыл бұрын
Deep voices can emphasise the threat of the Lannisters. Higher-toned voices like Peter's can emphasise the tragedy of the Raynes. So both voice tones work for this song. (: I personally prefer the latter since the lyrics are pretty sad.

As a GoT fan I loved and dreaded this song for long, but only now do I really understand its meaning... Now I feel a pinch in my heart every time I hear this somehow living the Red Wedding experience all over again. Thank you Peter Hollens for making such a poignant version.

This is great - awesome job replicating the sound of plucking strings with your voice!
