Thanks again for the video Peter! I don’t know any freelancer that didn’t start their freelance without having a side job as well. Once your freelance money doubles the amount of your parttime job then you can quit safely. Also pro tip for you youngsters out there. Try to figure out how much money you need on a yearly basis. For instance I need roughly €50.000,- per year. As a wedding photographer and videographer, I charge €5000,- per wedding. So I only need a minimum of 10 weddings per year. I end up with yearly 20 to 30 weddings. However, keep in mind that it is not easy. Especially working your way up from scratch as Peter mentioned

Aside from the awesome breakdown and discussion in this video, I really enjoy all of your videos. They're always informative and no nonsense when it comes to providing us with the information we're looking for. And I can see why clients like working with you. This was a good video on how to get into charging for videos. Here in the states a 60 second video has a rate of around 1000 bucks while 3 minute videos go up to 5000 per video. I don't think many people realize how much work goes into the whole process. So get paid for your time that makes it fair for you and your client.

Something that I have found useful is to use a good rental company for your gear until you save enough to buy your own. I charge the client for rental gear and always pad the rental price to cover the time used to collect and return it. This was you can turn up on the shoot with the latest gear and look the part without all the expense of owning.

Great video but hourly rates kills you longterm because you get better with time and can do things faster. So for example a beginner needs 3 hours to edit a video, a pro can do the same video in 1 hour. So the pro gets less because he is faster??? NEVER charge by hours, always tell your client a fixed price!
@PeterLindgren15 жыл бұрын
Glad to hear your opinion! Since I've been doing both I think that hourly is the way to go. If you set a fixed price and you end up spending more time than you initially thought, then you're gonna have a hard time charging more for the work you put in. But if you give an estimate based on hourly rates and say that the price will adjust depending on the workload you can always charge more. But I guess everyone works differently with this, this is just my preferred way!

Struggling with this atm. I've been a long time music photographer but I'm just now getting more into video. A few local bands all want to hire me to shoot their music videos. They're also friends so I don't want to say no, plus I need the experience, but none of them have much budget at all.
@jaikavi54645 жыл бұрын
I’m in a pickle. For a shoot where you come up with the concept, you want to get a deposit on the total price before you invest your time in planning it. But you don’t know how much to charge until you’ve planned the shoot, because actors, extra equipment hire, number of shoot days, etc. are factors that vary with each production. How do you get around this predicament?
@PeterLindgren15 жыл бұрын
Calculate the cost for the Actors, props, location and everything else and give the company an estimate. As long as you give an estimate with fine print saying something like "This is just an estimate and additional costs may be charged" you're playing things safe!
@jaikavi54645 жыл бұрын

I came across your video after watching a couple of similar ones. And I must say... I feel kind of depressed. I've been a freelance editor for almost 3 years now, in Spain, and I don't seem to be able to charge more than 200-300€/day, and that in the best case scenario, 'cause also I've ended up with projects that gave me less than that. After working with several clients I realized the more common fee they're willing to pay is around 150€/day and as a matter of fact I just got a client laughing at me last week because he thought that was nuts. So I'm not sure if it's my country, if I'm just a loser or if I have zero luck when it comes to getting clients. But I'm sure I've lost more gigs than I got for charging what I felt was a fair number.
