Great video Chato. There's a line from Frank Miller's Elektra Assassin "It makes sense... It's all wrong, but it makes sense." That's what the pitch for this series is. You can see how, to people who don't understand real humans, some execs might think there would be an audience for this. Of course there isn't, and when we see how these ideas are brought to life, using leftover masks from Squid Game, that this was going to tank.

This new Robyn Hood show is _THE_ funniest, slapstick, spoof comedy since The Naked Gun. The way that red-haired, police _girlboss™_ kicks her subordinate, barely even lifting her leg _(in hindsight, perhaps she was breaking wind)_ in the process, sending him flying across the room, wincing in pain, meanwhile, she enters some sort of satisfied Bruce Lee pose, had me in complete stitches with uncontrollable laughter. This is the best spoof of Robin Hood since Mel Brooks' Men In tights. Well done Director X, your comedic shots were truly something to behold. I have no idea what people are complaining about. "Many reviewers have called it out for its 'cultural appropriation'; as a (former) network exec, I don't care" -- Yeah, that's about par for the course. When adapting European folk lore, network execs don't seem to mind changing things willy nilly but when it comes to adapting folk lore from any other culture it should suddenly be treated with the utmost respect. Hell, even when it comes to real historical figures, like Ann Boleyn, or Joan of Arc, or Julius bloody Caesar, they can't help themselves. I wish they WOULD care.
@dbsommers1
@dbsommers1 Жыл бұрын
Exactly. They *do* care, as long as only certain cultures are affected. If someone is selective in their methods, then it's part of a plan. They are quite open in their social re-engineering. And it's going to get much worse.

Honestly, I'm less concerned about "cultural appropriation" , A story from one culture can often be retold from another culture's point of view and make for great entertainment. I'm more concerned with the tendency in this particular story, to use the name and forget the actual story. Robin Hood isn't about a guy stealing from the rich and giving to the poor. It's about a guy stealing from a repressive, abusive, over-taxing government, and giving to the overtaxed working-class people. The story's about bad government, not rich and poor people.

@@johngaltline9933 A good illustration of a story from one culture being retold for another culture is "Seven Samurai" from Japan being turned into "The Magnificent Seven" in the US. The cultural touchstones are all different, but the core story remains the same through both. If "The Magnificent Seven" hadn't already been made (and then remade), there is zero chance we'd see it made in today's woke climate. Because it would be considered cultural appropriation for "stealing" the story from Japan.
@tiagorodrigues3730

I don't think that he would care about John Wayne playing Genghis Khan, either, or _The Seven Samurai_ being adapted into a Western _(The Magnificent Seven)._ If he cared, then you have a case. If he didn't, you do not.
@Pitchguest
@Pitchguest Жыл бұрын
@@tiagorodrigues3730 I'd prefer if they cared more for both, but for some reason, particularly in this day and age, certain cultures are given more reverence than others. @@hermask815 This is a case of 'judge others by their own standards', and by the standards of the 'class of people' who made this show, they are the type to get angry when others appropriate their culture, even when it isn't their culture's product. If someone is the kind of person to seriously complain about cultural appropriation, then even if you don't really care about it you can criticize them about said appropriation in a non-hypocritical manner. ^.^ It is like criticizing a Christian housewife who gets huffy at people not dressing for church on Sundays even if they're not going to church or aren't Christians... then she has an off day and doesn't have her Sunday Best. You can then point and go 'ooooh... dressing down this Sunday? What happened to dressing in your Chruch Best?' That sort of thing. ^^

Have Prince funding/supplying the dealers to drive the prices down due to the crime so he can swoop in and 'fix' the neighbourhood and the sheriff on the take. Or, to make this more distinct from the legends have the sheriff honest, genuinely opposing the crime but undermined by corrupt people in Prince's pocket. That in turn sets up a potential conflict between Robyn and the sheriff later, with them still gunning for her even though they know they're fighting the local criminals too.

In my opinion, there are plenty of movies where we follow the stories of criminals, and we even end up rooting for the criminals. There's plenty of heist movies where the characters steal from casinos, movies where a troubled band of misfits get together to fight bigger badder guys, or even law-toeing lawful-evil guys. It's okay to have cartoonish premises, and bad guy protagonists. Some of the funnest and most beloved movies follow a common thief or rogue just trying to survive. All in, it's obvious this Robyn Hood show isn't popular because it's blatantly being overpolitical in a currently polarized political climate.

I think the concept of the show would have been far better if Robyn Loxley and her band was the name of a company like "Loxley Corporation" or some such business name. It would be a company of private investigators, journalists, security experts, actors, lawyers, etc. and whatever other jobs necessary to get "the job done". The Prince and Sheriff would be the BIG BADS among other smaller baddies. This would create a positive vibe for the show as they could showcase how modern technology and laws can be used to right wrongs. This premise gives the show a concept for seasonal renewals and cameos by famous people or character changes if necessary. The Loxley company could start with a core group of actors and then grow, expand, or contract depending upon storylines and season finale events. It could hit all the Drama, Comedy, Soap Opera, Action, etc. tags you could want.

The way I would have done it instead of "Robbin' da hood" would be making the series a legal drama. I'd imagine a team of lawyers from different backgrounds and skill sets (loosely inspired by the original characters) who'd been wronged in one way or another by Prince and the sheriff, and their fights within the legal system to bring justice and working pro bono to help the poor and helpless against corrupt forces within the police, unscrupulous business men (and women) and politicians. I'd make it in a case of the week format in addition to the overarching main story of the season. Think House MD for the feel of the series. What do you think Paul, would I get hired? Also now I want to see you wearing an official FNE hat for these videos, I think it would be fun.

I like that you went for a constructive approach, instead of just screaming how terrible the show is. The way i would have created a modern day Robin Hood series would be in a similar style like they did the series "Hustle", or leverage (for the US audience). The Bad Guy could be a powerful (and brutal) criminal overlord called "the Prince", who want's to take over the lead of his fathers criminal organisation. It would be far more effective to have our heroes battle against such a individual, who is NOT bound by the law and could be portrayed genuinely scary and brutal (nothing to graphic of course).

In the myth Robin is a highly skilled archer and swordsman, indicating military training. Indeed a lot of tellings have Robin being a former noble, to explain his skills. Robyn, would have been better served by this sort of background. The downfall of an aristocrat who learns about the injustices of the world that she once benefited from, would provide a natural arc to her character. Her being trained by the Canadian military to protect Canada's humanitarian missions in Iraq would give her a bit of sympathy, explain her abilities, and provide some echoes of Rambo-style baddassery, For John Prince, I'd actually not have him be a developer. I'd have him be an organized crime boss - with the Sheriff being his enforcer. Robyn goes from robbing from the rich - to robbing from crime bosses and the people who prey on her neighborhood, to help make the place a little bit better. For our version of maid Marion, I'd go with a clean cop. Introduce him as being hunted by the dirty cops after he learned something he shouldn't have. I'd also give the sheriff some more shades of gray. From the sheriff's POV, while John is a bad guy - he's a bad guy who managed to unite the criminals of the area to produce something resembling stability. She didn't start off bad - she broke bad with how impossible the neighborhood was, and now she's in so deep she can't dig her way out again. From the sheriff's POV - she's facing what appears to be a gang war, to remove the devil she knows - and she doesn't know what is likely to replace him.

I'd prefer John Prince to be a local government official. A mayor or housing commissioner, or some such. It would make for a better story, and be a better fit for the source material for Robyn to be fighting against a corrupt government that is trying to push people out. Robin Hood isn't about stealing from the rich and giving to the poor. It's about stealing from a corrupt government that over taxes the working people, and giving back to those working people.

Sounds great but you know it could never happen, the message isn't being beaten into you with every second of film. Can't have that. All those talking points are not hammered in hard enough, this is too neutral you need to be divisive and antagonizing to everyone, keep them pitted against one another. Because that's how it has to be to avoid the Twitter mobs coming after you and all the istaphobe rants on TikTok that they do. This comment is sarcasm but the truth of it and how the current culture operates, is not.

I feel like from what I've heard about it, this show could almost work... but seems to be suffering from the same problem pretty much every recent telling of Robin Hood has. For some reason people think the story is about stealing from evil rich guys and giving to random poor people. Robin Hood is about stealing from a government that is over taxing the people and giving to those overtaxed people. You could tell a great story with almost the same feel as this show just by staying true to the source material. Gentrification is a thing, and it does really hit the longtime residents of a neighborhood hard when their property taxes skyrocket. There is plenty of story to tell, say of this John Prince maybe being a corrupt zoning commissioner or some such that is intentionally increasing taxes to force out the working-class people. Sadly, no one in network TV is going to make a show suggesting that maybe we don't need quite so much government in our lives.

Another adaptation that would be consistent with the original folk tale would be if Robyn owned that building and lived in the penthouse, and ran the building fairly and ensured the inhabitants could live affordably and with dignity, then worked together with various interested parties to interfere with another landlord who owned another series of buildings and squeezed them for profit. The point of the original wasn't rich vs poor, it was about benevolent leadership and observing your responsibilities as a leader vs selfish corruption. It was one rich guy calling out other rich guys, and the myth of Robin Hood was part of the origin story of the Magna Carta. If you really wanted to modernise it it would maybe even involve a class action lawsuit where Robyn supported the residents of the "bad" buildings in suing their landlords - and maybe working with some shady folks to get extra information or evidence for the lawsuit. It would be more of an interpersonal drama than a procedural (like the later seasons of House M.D.), and it would be good for one season. It wouldn't call out "the rich", it would call out corruption and late stage capitalism, and would emphasize that people with authority also have responsibility. Really the tale is easy to modernize because it's timeless. Corrupt kings and landlords are basically eternal, and the need to remind those in power that they need to do right is as relevant as ever.

Lol. Oh no, you mean a -2023- "Current Year" edition of The Littlest Hobo starring, what we going with, a Poodle or something? It writes itself. Here are some lyrics: _There’s a word that keeps on triggering me,_ _Down the road, protesting's where I'll be,_ _Every sign I make, I’ll start a new trend,_ _Can’t stay for long, just stole an iPhone, I'm gone again._ _Maybe tomorrow, I’ll need someone to bail me out,_ _Until tomorrow, I'll keep on being a lout._ Oh and the name may be offensive so it will need to be changed up a bit. "The Littlest HoboX?" No, that may be seen as fatshaming. "The not quite as tall as some other dogs but is still as strong as male dogs, Hobox" Nailed it. Actually, we probably shouldn't give them ideas.

From the little bit I've seen, I was reminded of the shows like the original version of the Tomorrow People and other Canadian, Australian, and British imports that Nickelodeon showed in the after-school slot back in the early 1980s. It just feels like it's written for smart 10-12-year-olds rather than adults, even more so than the innumerable other adaptations of YA fiction.
