You could uses two opposing mouse traps facing outward (so the bar moves toward the wing tip) as the base structure for the wings, and double the torque available. Attach them to a drive shaft parallel to the "fuselage, and incorporate the propellers themselves as a gear by putting a ring around the them attached at the wing tips.

I'm no rocket surgeon, but it looked as if your wings had too much area dedicated to stability at the expense of lift. That is, reducing stability would allow you to have more lift for the same wing weight and drag - or the same lift from a lighter and less draggy wing. Just my unedjumikated observation. Fun to watch all the same.

Use the stored energy of the mousetrap more efficiently by incorporating the use of rubber band instead of a string when connecting the lever arm to the axel.
@StandWithRussia
@StandWithRussia 6 жыл бұрын
You would get more power from your mouse trap if you take out the short end of the spring and give it more tension by turning it more and then installing it back in place. That will make the mouse trap super strong. It would probably cut the mouse in half. But for your plane will mean more torque.

Prop design is a tricky thing. The larger prop added a lot of weight and drag. Surface area on a prop is not that crucial. It has to do with the push/pull edge pitch. The leading edge is normally thin and aerodynamic to reduce rotational drag. The pitch is normally focused back and down. A prop has more of twist than a roll. If you look at most props the tips are almost horizontal. A thinner more streamlined and properly pitched prop along with a faster gear ratio would drag the plane more efficiently and cause it to climb. That is a big misconception people have about planes. Most think elevators are responsible for altitude increases. When it is actually power and prop speed. The faster the air moves over the wings the higher a plane will climb with no elevator input at all.

@killthesowrd7988
@killthesowrd7988 5 жыл бұрын
If you could use two mousetraps, you could've had one with a low gear ratio that gets the plane moving, while the second mousetrap has a high gear ratio that begins to speed up as the low ratio mousetrap is going. By the time the first (low) mousetrap is done, the second, higher gear ratio mousetrap will be spinning fast enough to propel the plane farther and faster.

As someone who's owned 7 different printers ranging from $100-$1200, I'd recommend spending some time with a nicer printer and see what you think then. I was super happy with my cheap printers till I got a used original prusa i3 mk2s, and now I've had cheap printers ruined for me forever. My biggest advice, if you enjoy 3D printers, is keep an eye on your local Craigslist and other marketplaces (Facebook, kijiji, etc) for used printers. Position the mouse trap so that the axis of the propeller is coaxial with the axis of the spring coil. You will have to reconfigure how you transfer the power from the mouse trap to the input shaft, but it should be more efficient because the power transfer will be constant through the full range of the mouse trap arm.

If you guys revisit this concept, or for anyone else that wants to play with mousetrap planes....research how to build indoor props. The ones shown here look like they lack the proper twist to make them efficient. Also, rather than playing with a gear box and all that, try driving the prop directly off the prop shaft. This will increase the prop rpm. To counter that, build a larger diameter (like 18-24 inch) prop, of Larrabee design for a 2:1 P/D ratio. This video and concept are great. I have a feeling it would have worked far better had some research been done into efficient props as opposed to the TLAR/RC prop methods. RC props are built for high RPM, and relatively low efficiency. That is fine, because most RC planes have plenty of power to maintain flight. But when power is limited, you need to maximize prop efficiency. That’s where the Larrabee shapes come into play. Larrabee did the props for the first successful human powered aircraft, and his designs are still used in indoor and outdoor free flight, human powered vehicles, full scale aircraft, and even electric generating windmills. Have fun, keep experimenting

I love watching these because its always very interesting. But yes, you are right. And often not in a joking between good friends, but rather putting Sam down randomly and not giving any credit. Usually you'd expect putowns to be met by quick retorts, when they dont, they feel more mean sprited. Buy hey, maybe its part of their thing, but from outside it often looks more about insecurity.

The mousetrap exhibited variable torque dynamics throughout the process, while the rubber band maintained relatively consistent tension. It appears the trap's mechanics fluctuated, whereas the rubber band provided stable resistance.

Growing up in the 1950’s there were lots of wind up spring powered toy trucks, cars, motorcycles, tractors, bulldozers and other toys, mostly from Japan. These were all abandoned in favor of batteries and pollution. But, you could also buy Cox Thimble Drome fuel powered two cycle engine toys, including planes, which were awesome. Maybe a bigger Victor rat trap, heavier but very strong would work, or possibly a bear trap. I should not have gone there, someone could get hurt.

Try adding an arm to the spring on the mouse trap so that as the spring pulls the cord the arm raises the cord away from the spring centerline giving you more/longer pull of the cord.

you could place the mousetrap in a totally different location (flat on the wing for example) and route your string to the gears, maybe with some small tubes or just small hooks... and as in your power drill video, use a much bigger propeller, i think the trap has plenty of force...
