LEGO Technic pieces would probably provide a much better structural strength for the airframe, and the wings to think of it. Using the LEGO building sheets as wings seems like a fundamentally bad idea because you can't really link them together in a reliable fashion, there's no connectors on the bottom of the plates so the joint is always going to be quite flimsy in one direction. Honestly if I had to build a LEGO R/C aircraft, I would make the airframe, formers, wing spars and ribs out of Technic parts and then cover the whole thing with transparent tape.
@joosekraft34057 жыл бұрын
HerraTohtori there are baseplates that you can attach bricks to from the bottom as well.
@HerraTohtori7 жыл бұрын
Most of those types of plates are much smaller than these large base plates, though. It's not about where you can attach things, it's more about whether the pieces are under tension or compression. Lego fundamentally rely just on the friction between the plastic surfaces to stay together which works fine for compressive load as well as side loads, but if you put a pillar of lego under tension (ie. pull on both ends) it will quite easily come apart. The same thing will happen if you try to make a wing out of several plates and reinforce the connections by smaller plates on top and bottom, the joint plates on the top or bottom will wiggle their way loose when the joint starts to bend under flight loads - and this will happen on both sides (center on the concave side, edges on the convex side of the bend). Trust me, I have more than a decade of intense Lego engineering experience under my belt, I know how these things work...

Designandrew ,thats kinda like saying who cares about flying now that we reached space. Flite Test is going through some growing pains,again. I like the free downloadable plans for planes and they do have some decent content. Its like anything else,you have to pick and choose what you do with what is offered. David and Peter both brought some really good context to Flite Test. Unfortunately,I am starting to see them getting away from that,and am not sure I like some of the people they are bringing on board. They dont seem to be adding anything of interest. I see a particular person on there that ,I guess may have some kind of talent but havent figured it out other than mabe class clown,as we called them in school. I am probably being unfair but seems like the show is getting too many people on there that cannot possibly contribute the same ingenuity and intellect that Peter did.

scott firman flite test is an awful religious cult. I couldn't stand all the 'brothers' and church from Bixler so I unsubbed ages ago, he also seems like a terrible .boss to work for. As someone who spends a lot of time figuring out how to make LEGO sets structurally sound I have to say a couple of things. 1: You need cross struts inside the structure, that will alleviate lots of the wobble that can shake it apart. 2: The saying less is more doesn't apply to LEGO flying machines, because they are so bumpy they create a lot of drag in the air so you need smooth parts going along the the wings to make it fly more stable

Excellent video and concept! I would have thought you would want to glue everything together, for durability. With some judicious use of glue on the wings, you might have been able to dispense with the wing spars, which would foster an improved thrust-to-weight ratio. It flew better than I thought it would, for a plane without ailerons.

11:20 ah yes, the stall spin. It happens when you pull up too soon with little airspeed and undeployed flaps. You should fly really calmly if you do not want any problems

Someone in my local LEGO group actually managed to make a 100% LEGO glider that actually flew. They had a thin LEGO Technic frame and used bags from the LEGO store as canvas to cover the wings. This thing is pretty legit too though. If I ever get more into RC planes (only got a 3 channel RTF model right now), I will have to try this myself.

Very cool! It seems it could use a little more vertical stabilizer area. The good thing is that this is the proverbial model that doesn't break but re-kits when crashed, so unplanned encounters with Terra Firma bring no cash penalty, just some re-fitting of Lego bricks. Nice!

Great observation! Yes the vert stab could have been larger. I just ran out of those one sided lego bricks!

I love LEGO. As a kid, I built my mom a whole Christmas village with LEGO. I’d ask for more and more every Christmas to keep building to her set. It had a working train, trees and all kinds of houses and shops. I’d have to superglue them together though.

I realize that the maker of this video will probably never read this, but I would like to suggest that making a biplane instead of a monoplane would have made the plane much more stable and easier to control. Also adding some curvature to the wings (camber) so that the wing cross section isn’t symmetrical and flat would help to prevent stalling at low speed and make level flight possible. This plane is only able to maintain lift when the nose is pointed up (angle of attack). Relying upon the nose upward to generate lift is asking for trouble because the natural tendency of the pilot is to keep raising the nose higher and higher, but at some point, even if unintentionally, the nose gets so high that the angle of attack is too high which leads to stalling. Could’ve been much more successful with these modifications.
