I found it interesting, the part about your rig sounding differently day to day. Ive been touring for 20 years and have never been able to get the same sound every day. Ive been using a voltage regulator for 20 years(helps) Even at home in a controlled environment things change day to day. What Dave said about your hearing changing or the paper of the speakers acting differently due to humidity changes. SO TRUE. some days are just better than others.

Dude! The talk about getting shocked while working on amps @ ~9 min cracked me up! I have a scar on a finger to this day from working on a Music Man HD65 (class B high-voltage thing) while it was live and touching something I shouldn't have. It burned a hole right to the bone and made an awful smell! I was younger and much more stupid, and had no sense for my own mortality. Love it, thanks!

Lots of tone talk going on here I love it, you were discussing mixing speakers and cabinets I believe Johnny over at Lynyrd Skynyrd stated to somebody on his Instagram they get their tone with two cream backs and 2 greenbacks in the cab. I tell you what years ago I'd went to their Meadville PA Fair concert which is outside on a big stage, and their tone was out of this world, that was the greatest concert I ever seen in my life. Great band great people. I go to both country and rock concerts I went and seen Montgomery Gentry, Foreigner and Frampton Foreigner had some pretty nice analog tone too. They made me really appreciate what a genius guitarist Mick is.

I,m old school. When I was a kid I got to see the Yardbirds live with like 500 people in a skating ring, and countless other great bands with great guitar players. The Allmans, CLAPTON, ZEPPY, FLOYD YES, BOZ SCAGGS! Then bands like Grand Funk, black oak, ,,, hundreds of band from 65 to 80,s!!! All live in like 3000 seat auditoriums. Back in the early days of a guitar, an amp and drive, fuzz wah maybe some delay reverb and nothing else. They made magic with what they had!! They didn't buy their tone like now adays!

2:01:50 Yes, redo that gig! Steve Stevens and Sebastian Bach and Pete Thorn (sorry but can’t remember the drummer) was awesome and I like watching SS get back to playing more of the hard rock/heavy metal/“glam” rock (don’t like that term). Count my vote for them to a full album with all new songs!

Yea Pete, I took the bright cap off the volume of my Marshall Superlead, but found out that cap controls the sound we love....which is brght and sizzle. DIFFERENT makes of caps then should be experimented with.....I found that a ceramic disc cap here sounded the best to me. The sound was edgy, sizzly, a raunchy distortion using a ceramic disc. The shiny polyester caps on the volume knob wipers sounded smooth but didn't have that 80's rock sound. Check it out and find what u like

Hey Pete, incredible interview with Dave Friedman. I see the Lab series combo behind you. I borrowed one back in the mid '80's from a friend and found the most unique overdrive sound from the amp. It seems like I used the lower output input on channel 2, cranked the gain and brought in the amp's compressor. I may have gotten the setting from Ty Tabor or maybe from a local player. Have you ever used that setting? Of course the clean channel tone was really nice as BB used the amp on that channel for many years. Thanks for the videos you are creating. I always learn something from each video..

Yeah with the midrange cranked and gain cranked, and low gain in which is actually higher gain (🤪 who knows why..?)

Just tried a G12-65 / G12M65 Creamback speaker combo in a Marshall 1960A Cabinet. The chimey cleans seem to be better than a quad of G12-65s, but the higher gains sounds a staying tight.

I wonder if Boutique Amps will start manufacturing high quality tubes for everyone soon, if they can maintain their manufacturing standards it could be a big thing for everyone
@jimmyray_hawkins

Cody, I asked that same questions in a Tone Talk video. Paraphrasing, the answer was basically: cost, machinery, materials, skill, any legal biz stuff, and the big one - the need. The vacuum tube market is limited to those who use tube amps. Globally it's small potatoes unfortunately. I personally think it would be awesome if B.A.D / Friedman would start making tubes. I'd be a customer - given they were reliable and did what they are supposed to do / sound like. Not my forte but that is what I interpreted from the answer I was provided. I'm sure others, including Thorn and Friedman as well more who are posting here..

20.00- this concept happens to me all the time! I have two Friedman’s and a Wizard MCII and all of them are baller amps. Some days none of them sound good to me (probably cause I’m sucking that day). Most days each one is the holy grail of awesome. Just goes to show your perception of sound and feel changes day to day.

Great content Pete....I can't get enough.....I'm such a Gear Geek..This is Ear Candy...Have you ever asked Dave about the Splawn Quick Rod 100 in Plexi mode. I have bought a used one 5 years ago before Freidman was as available as it is today, and it's simply amazing and the Holy Grail of the early VH tone...What is your opinion or his...I also want to buy a JJ Jr. how would they compare..
@Kasper911band
@Kasper911band 4 жыл бұрын
Jimbo B two different animals, both are great, but you really can’t compare a JJ Jr because it’s only 20 watts and gonna be more of a one trick pony, even tho it’s a good trick! I have 2 Splawn Quickrods a JJ Jr, and a Friedman BE 100, and at 100 watts, the BE and the Quickrod are in their own lane, the JJ Jr is one of the loudest 20 watts amps out there, but there is a limit to the headroom, flexibility. But I actually love them all for what they do.

54:07 Okay Dave. Ya got me. 21yr old. I have my stratocaster with a Seymour tele bridge pickup in the bridge, lipstick for strat in middle, and an quarter pound neck pickup. Have access to my friends fender bass amp which those two without pedals sounds great and fat. Then I have access to the fender mustang 100w modeling amp, which I try my best to imitate different great amps to the best of my ability. I think I do a good job on most fat clean sounding settings. An old 100w raven amp which bore lately I have been getting some very good sounds out of it. But wayy too much bass in the rhythm channel. And I had access to the blackstar hw or something tube amp. It was working great until I'm guessing the tubes died? And the light doesn't work anymore. I have the two tiny/black terrors by orange at my house. Neither of those tubes work at the moment. I have other guitars that sound great as well but I like the strat that I have put those new pickups in better. So my goal today is to pick one channel on the raven and work to hone in some better tone. Thanks Dave

You guys are the best. I have a JVM 205h which I really like especially with all the tonal options. Living down under access to try a Friedman is difficult as there are only 2? Importers here. Does the Runt 50 head defeat a Jvm in balls and tone or are they comparible? I know sound is subjective and personal but a reply would great either way. Thx Dave and Pete
