What a great chat.(As always) Thanks to your EVH pickup shootout I was introduced to Pariah an’ let me tell you, I’ve never had better sounding pickups in the 28 years that I have been playing. All I can say is Holy S…….. I had been using Arcane pups for quite awhile and when I heard the Pariah pups on your video, I had to try. Welp. I spent last weekend removing 13 Arcane pickups and replacing them with 13 from Pariah. What a difference. Nothing against Arcane but to me they always sounded a tad jangly or wimpy. Even in my Les Pauls I just couldn’t get what I wanted out of them. Even the artist models were lacking. Too bad coz they weren’t cheap! Kudos to Pariah for doing such great stuff and kudos to you Pete for introducing them to me. Cheers y’all

I have a SD custom in my 2001 R8 Les paul which goes into a BOSS SD-1 then into a Pink Taco with gain switch on second to highest gain and gain knob on 9. Then through a Marshall 4x12 greenback cab, pure tone heaven

I love a tube buffered effects loop....especially one that can jump for more gain

I used to use an old 100 watt Sun tube head into an 8 ohm 9x8 Traynor cab in parallel with an 8 ohm 4x12 JMC cab loaded with Pyle Drivers, and I ran the amp with all tone knobs on 0 and the volume at 10. The guitar I used at the time was a customized Hondo Les Paul copy with a Dimarzio SD and a Lawrence L-100 wired in series, with the latter toward the bridge. For additional preamp filtering I used a Rockman Distortion Generator in front of the amp. The one distortion sound I got with that setup sounded better than anything I’ve ever heard before or since.

PETE, The duncan 78 was definitely made for him. Seymour still has the work order for it it has the specs and date for the build. I think eddie had seymour make this for the tour coming up after the record came out. I do not hear a super d pu on the live shows. His tone has that A2 midrange and a softer high end. so in the black/white strat and for the secord record i am about 100% convinced he was using that seymour wind.

Essentially the SD from Dimarzio has a higher low and mid in the eq description and lower highs. Probably why it works great with Marshall amps

I have old late 70's DiMarzio SD 100 in my 84, and 86 Kramer guitars.. I also have a brand new SD 100 in a Fender Strat, and it sounds so different.. using OEM Trem vs the Kramers with the Floyd.

@@GCKelloch I'm not using the Fender bent saddles, i'm using the Wilkson locking saddles, stainless steel, which is a bit brighter... also the woods are totally different, also the neck, Maple fretboards vs Rosewood on the Fender.

Yeah i have compared them and the older ones are clearer and more defined overall. The old one i tested was not potted which does change the tone. so a better test would be a potted vintage DSD with a current production one.

I love my Friedman dirty Shirley 40 watt combo, but it blew a fuse we’re the power cable hooked in and I called sweet water and they had no idea the amp had 2 fuse in it, they should tell people how and we’re these fuse are . I ended up buying tubes I didn’t even need and I was getting ready to send it back to sweet water, thank God I just happened to look at my amp more they were not the first video on KZbin about this problem, get the word out Pete about these Friedman amps!!!

I run my 2203, that I built, with about 400 to 410 on the plates....a ppimv....500pf caps....25u on the screens ...32u on pre amp and phase inverter filter.....it does have 500 on the plates if I want it.....I would like to up the voltages on the pre amp in low voltage mode just to see

Really enjoyed the 23 pickup demo/shootout. I play mostly alder strats thru a Friedman pt v2 going to a 2x12 with a 20 watt greenback and a 25watt greenback. I have the sd 78 and like it mostly but feel the bass and low end could be more muscular. By comparison… dimarzio 36 anniversary has more mids but also more heft… and a tone zone also very meaty but prob too hot. Based on the demo… I really ended up liking Pasadena white and the Sd custom custom and the the sd Frankenstein not sure if that would give more in the low end? Thanks again for all this insight!

For those I certainly recommend trying to find guitars with well, preferably 10K or less. I prefer Alnico over Ceramic and passive or active as well.

To me I think Dave is right on the early pickups. When I bought my first ash Strat the owner and luthier of the store suggested the DSD and it nailed “ Runnin’ with the Devil” and “You Really Got Me” as well as the Super 2 which came next. But then as time went on I got the 78’ which nailed “I’m theOne” and “Little Dreamer” which leads me to believe Dave’s correct!

Seymour still has the work order with the specs and date for the "78" pickup so it was absolutely made for eddie in 1978. It did not have a name back then. when it was ordered from the custom shop many years later it was the called the EVH model which was supposed to mean "evenly voiced harmonics" Then eddie trade marked EVH when he made his company with fender so seymour changed the name of this pu to "The 78" and that is what it is called to this day. What throws a wrench into the mix is in 1979 duncan ran a ad for all of his available pu's and showed the duncan custom as the VH model? This later became the SH-5 after eddie threatened to sue seymour for using his name on a pickup without his permission. Did eddie ever even use this one? We will never know but i am almost 100% convinced "the 78" was used for the first tour(the invasion tour) to support VH I and was also used on the second record.

It is one of the worst LPs I've ever heard when it comes to how the album was mixed. Sonically, it could have been mixed a whole lot better than it was. I've always hoped that they would have remastered VHII and re-released it. Sorry for the confusion.

47:20 wtf is Friedman talking about? "it depends", we are talking about a specific tone here, every test was EVH early tone, the A-2 9k's sounded closest, period, you'd have to be deaf not to hear it

every little detail of the rig is so sensitive to the recipe of tone. the slighest change in EQ and distortion in the amp could lead someone to think they need a hotter/less hot pickup, or different magnet. it's impossible to give advice on pickups and such unless you have the exact rig and setup as whoever you are suggesting to, which is extremely doubtful
