It’s interesting how by the end of it, they’ve gone back to their old ways and built themselves a room that is strikingly similar in shape and dimension to the one they originally escaped from (albeit much less futuristic). Is it better that it’s on their own terms, or are they just perpetuating the cycle in a new location? Did they seek new places in search of freedom, only to introduce order and control into a new environment?

I think it's the old safety vs freedom trope, but they managed a good balance.

I think the moral of this story is the whole nature is good philosophy is bullshit and eventually humans will find some way to return to the status qou. People romanticize this notion of nature being better than modern industrialized society, that we should return to the stone age and live in harmony with nature, but in reality nobody wants that. They want the pretty Eden we see in this short not the duststorms, the starvation, the fire, none of the ugly crap. So we build shelters, make tools, and soon we automate things and eventually the cycle continues again. Edit: thanks for all the likes but I’d like to update my take. Living as nature hippies is stupid but also I personally don’t like big cities. People are annoying, there is crime, I think living in small suburban towns out in the wilderness or in modernized pastoral communities is the perfect sweet spot of not over crowded but with all the modern conveniences and comforts of our civilization. Ideally most settlements should be like this but sometimes we do need those bigger urban metropolises to trade with, I just don’t think we need as many and we should make space habitation more plausible and more affordable. My ideal future is an earth that is green and mostly clean with space ports and off world colonies built more for mass human habitation. We can have colonies that act as giant planet wide metropolitan cities and others for more pastoral or semi pastoral communities so we can get all of our agriculture.

People are too subjective and avoidant of immediate pain. The creation of society is the avoidance of the beautiful and unpredictable chaos of truly living. We were always made to create and incorporate the environment into ourselves, and through that things of our manufacture can be considered a part of nature. The nature-industry dichotomy is a false one, and the idea of nature allows for the expansion of the other with formal structure. People are loathe to reach out of their perceived social groups when they have been raised to be accustomed to them, and should continue to reach out to others and create with them, recognizing that they as a group affect us both positively and negatively (with the scene of peace but also the chaos of panic). Not recognizing this interdependence and oneness leads to the isolation and exploitation of a lot of our modern societies.

Balance doesn't exist it's just what you perceive being what would be traditional for your time. 1920 would have seem like the most decadent time of all for our ancestors while today people talk about that time as the time when "kid played outdoor". What you call "too much engulfed in technology" is only what you are not used to and perceive therefore as too much.
@martin-raison-music-composer Жыл бұрын
@@angemalaurie6074 I like your point but balance does exist though. For instance you need to be exposed under the sunlight during a certain amount of time every day to get enough vitamin D to be in a good health. Similarly you need to socialize ie see and talk to other people to be in good mental health.

lmaooo yeah, can be confusing, but i think the ending is more about finding a "great balance" between the beauty and freedom of the outside world, but the safety and confort of a socity. somehow, humans can't ive in a wild world, they ain't "animal" enough to survive outside alone, especially against nature. yet we need freedom, and feeling trapped makes us feel deppressed over the time. that's why we should find a balance between them both, i think that's the message of the short film : balance.

the girl hands the guys a blue flower to sorta show, ‘hey, we’ve found change and a new life’. and at the end, the blue flowers are surrounding the box they’ve built. (the box resembles the container at the begging, and the trapped environment they were living in.) maybe this is meant to show that although you could be surrounded by change, human nature usually falls back to what it’s most comfortable with.

Petrichor: A pleasant smell that frequently accompanies the first rain after a long period of warm, dry weather. The way they describe it at the beginning has changed by the end, but the meaning of the word is the same. The feeling of freedom, or the feeling of safety. Which is more important depends on the current circumstances, on the life lived, on the people you love. We do what we must for what we feel is most important.

Absolutely beautiful work, the animation and music was so haunting while still being charming. The optimist in me wants to believe that the similarity of their little hut at the end to their containers at the beginning represents finding balance - not as restricted and empty as their past in the dystopian city, but with enough structure and comfort to protect them from the dangers of the wild. I hope they can keep that balance 🧡

Rewatching this I think the fire is an analogy of humanity. The heroes flee their boxes. First they make a fire in the wild and are happy. Then they starve and when they get to an abundance of ressources they all gather in a chaotic manner at the first signs of thunder (everyone is stressed) and this time the fire causes their demise. At the end, they make a box again and the fire too is in a box.

That structure which the couple is escaping from at the beginning reminds me a lot of the Tower in the PS3 game El Shaddai. In this game, fallen angels enamored with humanity have built an artificial world, a tower, in order to hide themselves and their forbidden affections from the eyes of Heaven. Wanting to observe humanity reaching it's full potential, they deliberately let technology run rampart to the point that most animals in there are automatons, which further reinforces the artificiality of it all.
