AS a Welshman married to a Scot, and living in south Suffolk, the ability to visit family (mine ~300 miles, wife ~530 miles, both one way distances) I’m afraid EV’s are not quite there yet for me. My diesel estate will comfortably do 50+ mpg on trips to both sets of family. I can do Wales and back on a single (70L) tank, or comfortably make it one way to Scotland. Neither family destinations have drives I can charge in overnight, so for me the practicalities of an EV are not quite there yet.

Good content as always and I was waiting for a video of this sort. For me the whole electric versus petrol or diesel is a massive dilemma. Electric cars are way too expensive at the moment for the equivalent petrol or diesel. And at the same time if you buy another petrol or diesel now you don't know if local authorities will slap ULEZ charges on them in the future (say next 3 years). And if electric cars do take off in a big way in the next 5 years then will the residual values of petrol and diesel cars fall through the floor. Further the semi conductor shortage that has elevated car prices may reverse with the cost of living crisis predicted. So have made the decision to run my current car into the ground and wait for the issue to become clearer. However I would appreciate your thoughts. Thanks

Unusually for me that oversight was very deliberate actually Andy as I didn't want it to go on for too long and Hybrids are kind of covered here as they're either Petrol + EV or Diesel + EV. I feel like the viewer can probably work out the rest without so much danger of me coming over like a repetitive bore. I sort of think (very generally) if you're going for a new petrol car then with a turbo makes a lot of sense, if you're going for an older used one go NA as it's something less to potentially go wrong.

An electric car has around 20 moving parts. It has no engine, needs no engine oil changes, has no engine cooling system, no clutch, no gearbox, no fan belt or timing belt, no exhaust system.... A typical ICE car has all these plus hundreds of other moving parts to wear and break. You decide which is likely to offer superior reliability. And yes, EV servicing is normally way cheaper.

Interesting points raised, however, all is not assumed correct in this debate. When the ‘benefits’ of diesel ownership, in particular the fuel economy, diesel was seen as the best thing since sliced bread in the 90’s and 000’s, people duly went out there and purchased them in their hundreds of thousands. Due to the popularity of diesels, car manufacturers added a premium cost to diesel cars over their petrol counterparts citing extra costs of Diesel engines over petrol engines. However, with diesels being tagged as the cause for all manner of environmental and health damage. Whilst researching for a replacement car for my VW Tiguan I had noticed that due to the demonising of diesel fuelled vehicles by our government that diesels appear to be losing the ‘premium’ cost over petrol derivatives, one of which is the popular BMW X3. I ordered a X3 last July which has only just been manufactured, my choice was the X3 M40d which was approximately £750.00 cheaper than the comparable petrol derivative, the M40i. The service intervals are the same as the petrol version, the fuel efficiency is approximately double of that of the petrol version, performance is equivalent of the petrol and the predicted future value is greater than the petrol derivative. On that basis why would I buy petrol? I’m extremely happy with my choice and have no conscience for continuing to buy diesel fuelled cars as it is well known that BMW are at the forefront of Diesel engine research and development and produce some of the most advanced and cleanest Diesel engines in the world! Unfortunately, I did not consider EV’s because of cost and recharging infrastructure.

Those diesel "benefits" were seen at the time as being genuine enough, but since then have been proved to have been inaccurate and misleading. Both Paris and Berlin have now banned diesel cars from their centres. Other cities will probably do the same in the years ahead..... I think that’s a big dilemma for anyone looking for a new car this days. Electric is the future, cars are really cool and you’ve got an instant power and torque that you can’t compare to any of the combustion engines on the road. Zero road tax and you can charge at home. Shame you need at least 50k for a good one. Diesels is taking the electric vehicle range anxiety off you but they’re definitely expensive to maintain. And if you drive around London you need an arm and a leg for ulez, congestion charge, etc..On the other hand, petrol look to me the most balanced choice at the moment. Reasonable priced, not too expensive to maintain, insurance costs okay. Actually, a plug-in hybrid could me a better choice!

But petrol and diesel also involves mineral extraction. Didn't you know that? The oil companies have mined cobalt for decades. They need cobalt to remove sulphur during the refining process. And don't overlook the fact that an EV battery can be recycled, and the lithium and cobalt can be 90% recovered and reused in new EV batteries. You can't recover and reuse petrol and diesel.... And you are aware obtaining oil also involves extraction on a huge basis? So, on the strength of your "extraction" argument alone, the oil industry comes out a poor loser.
@Tom55data2 жыл бұрын
Just a couple of comments 1) Insurance - "for an equivalent car " is a difficult one as even the slower EV's are generally more powerful, and insurance for high risk groups results in problems with cost. For middle age people (lowest risk), then for an equivalent car there is no difference in cost. You must look for deals, and as of last year Churchill and Direct line were good with EV's. 2) The environment problem - the issue that is currently ALWAYS left out of the equation is the energy required to purify petrol/diesel (fractionating oil at high pressure and temperature), and when the full life-cycle from source (ground) to car moving then peer reviewed article from Harvard indicates that there is a 200 fold improvement environmentally to use and EV in a typical energy mix country because of the pollution/energy usage from petrol production from crude oil extraction and purification is very high. Funny enough, many articles measure extraction of minerals for batteries, but never include the extraction and production costs for petrol/diesel. The latest was the Volvo report 2 months ago. To give you an indication of the cost of the oil industry to various economies, (OECD numbers) the UK subsidies the oil industry by £10Billion/ year, and the US subsidies its oil industry by $1Trillion/year. People complain about the green subsidy (230 million), but forget about the other subsidies. 3) Fuel in ships : this is a red herring - although shipping can use heavy poor quality crude oil open sea (so very polluting), the proportion of energy is low : Combining passenger & freight, and by mode type, here is the approximate proportion of energy usage by mode. car : 44% Air : 12% heavy truck : 12% light truck : 11% marine (shipping) : 8 % bus : 3% train : 2 % Other : rest 8%

@@Tom55data Why am I not surprised? When the 2030 ban finally arrives, the oil industry will be able to save their money Tom. And 5 years or so after the ban arrives, it might hopefully be time to look at greatly reducing the huge taxpayer funded subsidies handed to the oil industry each year..... There doesn't seem to be much logic in heavily subsidising something you seek to phase out....

DefinitelyNotAGuru, It's a pity you missed out the massive amounts of energy transporting oil around the world in huge diesel ships. Then the massive amounts of energy, cobalt and electricity refining the oil. Then transporting it to the petrol stations in diesel lorries. All producing tons and tons of CO2.
@DefinitelyNotAGuru2 жыл бұрын
Well thankfully for us all Les, you didn’t. Fair point thanks. I suppose we should remember that a lot of power stations are still oil powered of course. There are so many things to consider 👍
@Les_Hewitt2 жыл бұрын
@@DefinitelyNotAGuru There would be far less oil refining needed as oil power stations provide an ever smaller percentage of the total energy generated. Even if EV adoption increases significantly, there would be less oil transportation and refining needed than with the present situation. Therefore less pollution.
@Brian-om2hh2 жыл бұрын
You overlooked all the electricity used just to pump oil out of the ground, before it even gets to a refinery..... And around 25% of all the diesel produced is used to transport the rest of it to where it is used or sold. Utter madness.
@sisyphussapprentice89762 жыл бұрын
A decent report that has none of the emotive aspect of most. Speaking as one that drives a twenty year old diesel, to which I offer no apology, the answer is not available yet. If we head down the electric rabbit hole we need to address our generating capacity which will woefully fall short if we start relying on a couple of windmills. Diesels can be made "cleaner" by including additives in the fuel at the refinery, as can petrol for that matter. But that doesn't address the fossil fuel conundrum. If we didn't already know, knee jerk reactions cause more problems than we initially had, and I feel this will be the result of this green agenda. On a seperate, but related note, no one drives for fun today, unlike when I first got a car in the late 50s, so it is safe to assume that every vehicle on the road has, in the driver's eyes, a valid reason for being there.
@DefinitelyNotAGuru2 жыл бұрын

A "couple of windmills" ?? The UK has one of the largest wind farms in the World, located in the North Sea......... And the National Grid don't seem to feel the UK's generating capacity will be "woefully short". Indeed, so confident are the National Grid, they were among the organisations whom lobbied to bring the ban on the sale of new ICE cars and vans *forward* to 2030 from 2035. The NG anticipate around 9 million EV's on Britain's roads by 2030. But hey, what do the people who actually run the grid know about running the grid eh? The Head of the National Grid (who drives an EV) plus his Chief Development Officer, both appeared in front of a Parliamentary Committee a couple of years ago, specifically to face and answer questions like the one you posed. That meeting was posted here on KZbin if you wish to see it...... As a point of interest, the UK's oil refineries already use enough electricity to charge almost 4 million electric cars each day. They produce 14 million gallons of petrol and 11 million gallons of diesel each day. And each gallon takes between 6 and 8kw of electricity to produce it. And that doesn't take into account the huge amounts of electricity used just to pump oil out of the ground, before it even reaches a refinery..... If the rumours are correct, the new Euro 7 emissions laws will be appearing in 2025. Most car makers have already agreed that it will be too technically challenging, and too costly to get new ICE engine designs to comply. Hence the reason some car makers are switching to full EV production within the next 3 to 4 years.

My Kia EV costs me around £3 per 100 miles. And that's *after* a 50% increase in the cost of overnight charging. Which EV's have you owned which have cost you a fortune when they went wrong? I'm not sure I see your logic. An electric car has around 20 moving parts. An ICE car has hundreds of moving parts to wear and break. Yet you assume the ICE will give fewer problems. Why? And you mentioned charging an electric car will cost the "same". The same as what? Petrol or diesel? Er, no. Because if the cost of electricity goes up, then so does the cost of refining oil to produce petrol and diesel. It is never going to be cheaper to run an ICE vehicle.
