In my recent comparison video between my Porsche 718 Boxster 2.5 GTS and the 4.0 GTS I messed up. I'm not too big to admit I got it wrong so here is an apology and explanation of the mistakes I made. Oh and I've got a lovely new set of Michelin Pilot Sport 4S tyres just in time for my drive tour next week.

In all fairness you are a one man producer, presenter and content creator extraordinaire, during lockdown you kept us entertained and I sincerely appreciate your hard work, I think about the good things that you do rather than minor errors. Frankly, there is no such thing as messing up even big media organisations make mistakes. Viewers can be very critical with all the advantages of hindsight, but we are mere spectators, credit to your creativity and content!

It’s equally hard to keep your content fresh, so well done 👍 just one gripe that is creeping in to our everyday conversation… Super hard, super efficient etc…. Drives me nuts! So could we start saying ‘very’ again please? If you could it would make me ‘super’ happy 😃

Pete, love your videos! I have a GTS 4.0 Boxster and when I watched your comparison video, I thought it was one of the fairest comparisons I had seen. You gave pros and cons to both cars. I felt like the theme was that both cars are great, but different and you nailed it. I was impressed with you being so fair, despite owning one of the cars. I considered a used 2.5 Liter GTS but at the time the used market was so crazy (USA), a new GTS at MSRP (and a long wait) wasn’t a huge difference in price in comparison to a used 2.5 L. At the time, a used GTS 4.0 was pricier than ordering a new one. For the price difference you got, I would have definitely taken the 2.5 L. Stats on the web are contradictory, so don’t beat yourself up. Keep up the good work! Look forward to the upcoming pod casts with Joe Achilles!

Great that you’ve made a new vid and sought to explain - I can’t imagine being cameraman, producer, editor and star but you do all that and I wasn’t for second fussed about your findings. You love your car, I love mine…..your video actually made me love mine more 😂 keep em coming !

I saw the first video of this topic a now the second one. Apart from the many comments and feedbacks you received, I think that isn't so common to find someone who honestly admits his mistakes. Many, would have moved on without any sense of responsibility and respect for the "right specs" of both cars. So... well done Pete! Thank you for what you doing and for seeking things done right 😉

I think it was really cool that you revisited the video and addresses the inaccuracies. Personally, I would limit the facts and figures and focus upon your own feeling about, and assessment of, the car. I can easily find out the weight or 0-60 but I cannot find out how good the lights are for example without driving the car at night, something most testers completely overlook. Well done, I applaud your integrity.

I fitted 4 tires MICHELIN Pilot Sport 4S on red Fujilight Renault wheels (Trophy-R), these are really perfect tires, the finish on the sidewall is also as smooth as velvet. I am dressing the tires also with some CARPRO Darkside (you can use Carpro Pearl also) and the finish is lovely, beautiful tires to look at. I paid 880€ for 4 tires in 245/35R19 93Y which is not absolutely crazy regarding the quality. You'll love them on the Porsche for sure. Cheers from Belgium.

I had a 4cyl 718 Boxster S 2.5L and it was a brilliant bit of kit. I now own a 911 but if I had the money I would still have the 718 too. Obviously very different cars in there own right but equally enjoyable to drive. Another point to mention on the tyres, when I bought the 911 it had P zeros, I went to Snetterton and had a great day ragging them out and a week later fitted PS4S, it’s night and day how much better they are 👍. I haven’t owned a Porsche yet but might be in the market for one soon. As you say, different cars but with your experience … new 718 Cayman S or 2nd hand 991 3.0 T (preferably S or 4S if Funds allowed!) It’s difficult, as a brand new car is always nice, but thinking you get the best of both with a 911, the flat 6 and ooodles of torque. Residuals probably better than a new Cayman 4 pot too?

Your videos are always informative, and much appreciated. As I am your height and was looking for a 718 I thought I might as well forget a 4.0 so just bought a 2.5 two weeks ago! Oh well fairly happy with the 2.5 but at least I now know a 4.0 is still an option in the future. Interestingly ours has the heated folding carbon buckets and these do definitely give more legroom due to the thinner backrest.

Nice vids, no worries mate! Concerning your seating position, there seems to be a difference in the height of the seatrest against the rollbar in the two cars. Could there be a height/seatback angle adjustment that actually was different and made you feel the discomfort in the 4.0? I’d have any of them by the way, to replace mine tired old 987….😂

When my mate went to do his Driving Test, not only did his old Land Rover have different treads and tyres on each corner, but different wheel sizes. The Tester just giggled and shook his head. Top man for the honest update, it's easy to get the wrong end of the stick with some of the incorrect and confusing information out there on the web. You should frame those French Pirelli tyres, more expensive than a lot of art. Good move on the PS4S, we had two sets on our 981 after the Pirellis cracked badly, we are waiting to get the new P Zeros replaced. You will need to do a few miles to properly bed in the Michelins. Enjoy your videos, even more so for your honesty.

First, major kudos for posting a follow-up video to clarify previous discussions comparing 2.5L Turbo and 4.0L NA 718 GTS models. As you summarized, these two variants certainly do offer different driving experiences. One important topic I discovered which probably could be mentioned is the presence of turbo lag with a 2.5L car. After having driven both versions of GTS cars, I noticed that the 2.5L definitely has turbo lag which can only be avoided if kept in Sport+ mode. Demonstrating this point, I performed a simple comparison test which was to cruise at 50mph and then stomp the throttle (which simulates overtaking a slower vehicle on the highway). Doing this test reveals the presence of 2.5L Turbo lag in all modes except Sport+. The issue is probably related to only having a single turbo (whereas the 991.2 and 992 use twin turbos but which are still not identical to a true 991 or 992 Turbo with its twin VTG turbochargers). As a result of my two GTS test drives, I decided on the 2023 718 GTS 4.0 (to avoid the turbo lag issue) and am thoroughly happy with this decision! One final side note, I happen to be a 6'2" tall driver and interestingly have found the 14-way Sport seats are very comfortable on 3+ hour jaunts. To prevent hip discomfort, I set the seat low with slight rear tilt and adjust lumbar for solid lower back support. This appears to work well. Cheers!

Hi Pete. Completing this video shows the sort of person you are and that is very positive. You love the car and really care about your audience. It is hard to make comparison's about two cars that on paper should be very similar. In many ways, these two are very similar but in some they are not and if you know one a lot more than another, views are always going to be influenced by that. Facts and figures - yes, in some respects, it's best to focus on the subjective, but people still love the figures, even when they are so close as to not have a material impact. The weight one is quite amusing - as I said in a previous post, you can still see the 2.5GTS in China and Porsche's own spec shows it is actually very slightly heavier than the 4.0. I'd be very surprised if that difference (even if it was the other way around) would be discernible. If you are sensing something, it is much more likely to be amount of fuel in each car, the condition of the tyres affecting cornering or braking or the way power / torque is delivered. As mentioned, torque is identical at peak but you get a hit of it very early on the 2.5 (turbo) but with the GTS4 it is more progressing, albeit 80% available from just over 2,500rpm. Even with the same (to all intent and purposes) acceleration, that delivery feels different and could be perceived as requiring more effort with the NA and that could be attributed to possible additional weight. I've driven both (although, on my side, the knowledge / experience bias is with the 4.0). They are both superb and as you say, even from an emotional perspective only, one is not better than the other - just different. The sense of better could easily change with time owning each car, but maybe, for some, it wouldn't. Keep up the good work. Paul

Fair play. I still wonder if there's some subconscious bias in the mix, BUT credit to you for acknowledging the inaccuracies. It must indeed be a challenge to validate data at times. To be honest I would never have considered that the bulkhead would move between models. Why they felt different, I've no idea, given the same seats, unless the pedal box set up differs; bringing them closer to the seat. Anyway, have fun. Thanks for the enjoyable content👍🏻

Thanks for the explanations. When listening to the episode in question I had a few doubts but I trusted your general perceptions.A handheld laser measurer from Bosch might be useful. Firstly, having being in a 2009 Boxster, recently I was quite shocked by the lack of space compared to say an e89 Z4, a car also lacking much space for the long legged (and I am average at 181m tall). It is fair to say that an MGB does the job better for larger drivers! Secondly, there is an awful lot of internet waffle about exhaust noise. The reality in Europe, tyres drown out anything that is remotely legal (and you will get pulled over if you make too much racket (motor bikes seem to have exemption though!). Lastly, the smaller Porsche makes very much more sense. It is plenty fast enough and unless you are upto the Nordschleife and Francorchamps in the wet, it is best to keep quiet!

The PS4S is approved for the 991 but not the 997. OK the tyre sizes are different but I was told that Porsche had just not done any testing on the older car and since that tyre was not available when the car was launched it was unlikely testing would occur. Like you I am not sure if they are any different. However, from experience over the last 2 years the not N rated PS4S tyres are great.

Hello Ped, I too have a 2018 GTS and like you, I love it and so much so that more than likely I will end up keeping it. I personally do not have an issue with the sound at all, I am pretty sure I have a std exhaust set up and if anything, mine sounds louder than yours whereas I saw you have an after-market one - would like to try and compare this at some stage given the chance and hopefully prove me wrong. For info, I purchased mine with the PS4S NO already fitted, from the date stamps believe these were the originals and have only just this week changed to a new set after just hitting 18K Miles. Fronts in particular still had plenty of miles in them but I am with you on a performance car needing the correct boots and in good condition especially with our ever changing weather. Very much looking forward to seeing your high speed blast down the Autobahn 🙂 Have a great one.

Not using launch control on the 2.5L GTS is nerfing it quite heavily vs the 4.0L. I've seen people launch the 2.5L GTS 0-100kmh in 3.7s, while the 4.0L only manged 3.8s with launch control. If you just accelerate by stomping the throttle, a naturally aspirated engine will ALWAYS have the advantage.

I find tyres interesting. (Sad ain't i 😅) imagine how much of a car actually touches the road, it's hardly anything. So it's amazing how different quality tyres make such a difference. Would love you to do a video with the cheapest tyres you can get and see how much difference it makes
@ouethojlkjn
@ouethojlkjn Жыл бұрын
I think there is far more to tyres than people realise because exactly as you say, they are the only tiny part of the whole vehicle that rests on the road! We had a little citron, C2, VTR and the ride was so bad my wife wouldn’t drive it. In the end I had all four tires replaced for the cheapest alternative I could find and the ride was transformed. My guess is that the original tires were so old they had gone off and hardened in some way.

I have always thought that there was something wrong with me because I have always loved going to a tyre shop to get new tyres fitted, normally on a Saturday morning. I just love the smell of a tyre shop and the feel of the new tyres afterwards. I just love the whole experience.

Hi Pete no one is perfect, and as oyu say when under pressure that is when things go wrong. With cars like those you have to feel comfortable in them to get the best out of them. You always say it as it is no hidden agenda.

We all make mistakes Pete, it's not like you said things to deliberately mislead, you were just giving a very honest opinion, speaking as you find as it were. Stats for cars do vary greatly. I wonder if the seat in the GT 6 is different in some way, is the back slightly thicker pushing you further forward? Is there an additional feature that makes it different? Keep up the good work mate!

As you said, you are an enthusiast rather than a journalist so I wouldn’t beat yourself up about inaccuracies. I have the 4L Spyder so I’m surprised you didn’t gel with the GTS 4L. Porsche tend to always go forward in their development of models. One thing I would say is that after initially buying the Spyder in January I was not that impressed. However, now on Cup 2s and with the roof down on sunny days, it is an epic experience!

I feel your pain mate, people always want 0-60 comparisons but it just isn't worth it as there are too many variables for it to be worthwhile. The biggest one of course is that most of the time you aren't in a press car so don't want to do full bore standing starts in cars that do not have race spec flywheels and clutch kits etc. IMO Its more meaningful to do side by side in gear acceleration tests to remove a lot of the variables and keep the stress off the drivetrain.
@nickvlaanderen
@nickvlaanderen Жыл бұрын
I agree. And 0-60 is boring. How a car feels on a twisty road is more important for me. If you don't see it on a display, you don't feel a half or even one second difference. All interesting numbers in the pub, not more than that. Pete, i wish you a great journey to Spa and the Nürburgring. Greetings from the Netherlands.

Hi Pete, due to your statement about having less room for seating in the 4.0 compare to the 2.5 I hesitated to purchase the 6 cylinder for some time. At that point I clould follow your thoughts and considered it to be a very important information. But after having had a deep conversation about that issue, Porsche assured that this is not the case. So last week I ordered one of the very last 4.0 GTS Boxsters and will give away my 991.1 Carrera S Cabrio for the Boxster. Quite a coincidence to get to your video today about some faulty statements of yours ;-) no problem with that, because I really appreciate your effort and your passion and to me it really made sense. A good and comfortable seating position is more important then most of the people might think. So everything went really well for me and I will get my new Boxster 4.0 delivered (one of the very last ones in northern Germany) at the end of April. Aftere that date no 718 will be build with combustor engines anymore. Thank you very much European Union ...

Hi Pete, I have watched bundles of your video’s now and can I say just keep up the good work, I have to confess that I am collecting my GTS 4.0 in Arctic Grey the second week in June. I called Porsche to ask if the cabin size was different and they were not aware, can I just say thank goodness as I, like you, am 6’4. So looking forward to the new car, got the experience day on Thursday at Silverstone and it will be the first time in the 4 ltr ( currently in a 981 ). Can I also say your post on insurance was brilliant, I had the devil of a getting mine insured as I don’t have a garage or gates at my house. I have got L & V lined up but will give you guys a call for a sanity check. Any how, there are enough moaners out there, keep up the good work, there are loads more of us that really appreciate your honest thoughts and delivery Cheers

@richardkew6801
@richardkew6801 Жыл бұрын
@@gedknowles . Hi Ged, I placed my order from Reading Porsche back in October 21, so a total of about 19 months until I receive the finished article. Whilst I currently have a 981 , it was bought from an independent garage, so I have no history with the main dealer and I know this goes a long way to shortening the queue. I expect to keep the GTS for a little while but I hope that when I do consider changing, my history may help me a rung or two up the ladder. Anyway good luck with your order, having now had the experience day, I now know that it is a truly astonishing car!

Totally support you on the cabin space.... It is clear enough that you measured it every way you could. Why not make that assumption.... it is fair. Cabin space in sports cars is a very important thing. There are tall people and the point you mentioned is valid. They need items like this highlighted. That helps people to look into possible issues. Look at the Audi R8... with its famously small cabin.

Great videos, no need for apologies but the corrections are helpful. You do a good job - and with regard to this comparison, like you, I think the price differential is relevant [Porsche have to justify that difference, and they seem to be doing a good job, you don't]. And I wonder if Porsche were able show you how to solve the difference in comfort / leg room you experienced?

Nice channel cabin size experienced similar I'm tall 6,5 the newer boxster might well have same size by volume but slight changes in design can alter the layout without altering cabin size by volume - if you tall - or just shall we say wide/unfit it is noticeable, elbows might touch door when didn't before etc It is not imagined. I find older 911s more spacious but newer variants have airbags, insulation and seat padding it all adds up.

Love the video and if anything it proves that this obsession with 0-60 (or indeed 0-62) times proves those who buy cars to ‘flex’ don’t really understand that it’s how a car feels (and the journey to achieving its purchase) is what true enthusiasts are all about. Having a 981 GTS and a 718 Spyder, flat 6s are my thing but friends with the 2.5 flat 4 love theirs. Indeed I’ve had a couple of loan 2.5s and it’s way more punchier than either of mine. You pays your money and takes your choice - both have their merits, irrespective of their ‘stats’!
