48 Hours with a GT40 - Awesome but ended up costing me a fortune !

It's not often you get to spend 48 hours with a motoring icon like the GT40. Thanks to Le Mans Coupes I took their Superformance GT40 demonstrator to the Cotswolds for a Drive and Dine event with SCC Private Members. Such an awesome car with an amazing sense of theatre. The 7 litre V8 thunders along spitting flame and generally being antisocial. The fuel bill for the two days was eye-watering so I ended up working through the night !

The 4.7 litre Mk1 was timed at 207mph in practice while the faster 7 litre Mk2 was timed at 220mph in practice. A late friend of mine (Eric Liddell) did race GT40s at Le Mans and elsewhere and told me in heavy rain at Le Mans they had to back right off on Mulsanne down to 150mph because of severe aquaplaning. These guys were not just superb drivers but extremely brave.

Back in the early 80's a family friend who owned Merlin kit cars arrived at our house in a GT40. As you can imagine it blew my 10 year old mind, the sound of it, just incredible. I remember my dad trying to fit in it and having to sit with his head leaning over.

Great video and really liked the accommodation which was better than the wooden shack I once rented for a week in rural Inverness-shire after it had been hired to a hunting, shooting and fishing party who had made it their business to gut their spoils on the premises. Brilliant! forgot the wheel..... its a great video. Met the couple in Goodwood with a Gulf livery GT40 in 2014 think the were lapping at just over a minute..... took me 8 mins on my Brompton! And the steering wheel is about the same size as my Brompton wheels.

Been a GT40 fan since the 68 Le Mans after which I bought a Gulf Liveried one with my pocket money for my Scalextric set . Raced it so often I burnt the motor out twice ! Never lost my love for the car over the years and got quite close to buying an old Tornado replica about 20 years ago until my wife gave me an ultimatum, ‘ you bring a GT40 home and I go !! ‘ I miss her so much, the GT40 that is 😂😂 ! Great video Pete, makes me realise what I’ve missed out on all these years. The only thing I would change is lose the lethal looking canard fins. Appreciate they were fitted ‘in period’ but they do nothing for the looks and they would chop the legs off any wayward pedestrian who happened to step off a kerb at the wrong moment. Looking forward to more videos to come on whatever delicacies Le Mans Coupes have to offer you in the future.

Oh Wow Peter, I have two takes on this vid. 1) You may remember that when you did the vid on my Brothers Jag, you expressed the problem with how to get the sound of a car to be properly represented on camera. Given how this GT40 sounds on vid, the sound in reality must be just epic! 2) I’ve known you for a few years now & watched you develop the channel. I’ve just about scraped enough together to buy some sort of GT40 replica - not the one in the vid, unfortunately - and now on the lookout for the right car. I’ve been captivated by these unique cars for as long as I can remember and nothing else will do. All the others, I wouldn’t give a second thought to, however incredible they may be. To think, that’s a design from sixty years ago. Incredible.

I think you'll find the original GT40's hit about 210 MPH on the mulsanne back in '66. I have an album (old vynyl) of the 1966 LeMans, narrated by Graham Hill, and the opening sound is a GT40 flat out, and it's amazing....!

The price of enjoyment. I do find that when touring Europe it is annoying putting in €100 per day of fuel, but then it's smiles for miles. Glad you had a good trip.

Perhaps you should have filled up at Shell (you're rich) or Tesco (I'm poor) who actually both do 99 octane rather than 97 octane from Texaco? Shame you didn't get to 6500 rpm. Would have loved to hear it howl (but perhaps not on 97 octane)! You really need a Sonic intercom headset - as per rally cars between stages.

Fabulous! I'm pretty sure the originals (mk2 , 7 litre) were doing in the region of 200mph down Mulsanne, and less than 5mpg during the 24hr. 🤠 yeehah!

Peter you are not the first person to leave the wheel behind. We are paying about $2 a litre here in Australia but out $ is worth about half the UK money. That was great content, very different from most Videos on KZbin, not just yours. I was surprised how green the area was considering the UK had a taste of Australian summer temps. The last time we drove through the Cotswolds my wife made me stop on the side of the road to take a photo of some blue sky. Thanks for the vid, most enjoyable.

I find the wind noise in my 40 is even greater then the engine noise over 100 MPH despite the pops, bangs and flames. The heat inside is something else with the summer we are having given the rad pipes run through the cockpit.

The 7 litre (427) Mark 2 at Le Mans in 1966 had but four forward gears. On the Mulsanne straight they peaked at 6200 revs or 210 mph. In third, those revs equalled 165 mph!

I am a huge Ford fan as I grew up with them as a boy as my best friends Dad was a Ford dealer and sold my Dad the 1st Escort in Aberdeenshire and his Dad always took us to the Granite City Rally and always spoke to Malcolm Wilson at the events. As I grew up I was always envious of the guys in the village who worked offshore and had a variety of Cosworths. However with that car I'm not envious of the fuel bill and I am sad to say that car didn't whet my interest but the others at the meet I would have gladly driven any of them. Sorry.

Fames coming out of the exhausts may just be a clue as to why the fuel consumption was so poor. A 992 Turbo S with 650hp does twice the mpg he claimed to be getting.
