Because of your last video I managed to get a local PetSmart to not refer clients to these books. They sadly have to keep them because of corporates, but at least they don't use it as a main guide. I really hope they get them fixed though, because people who don't talk to staff may pick it up and get misguided.

I can't speak for all locations, but truthfully I worked at a pet store for over a year and I think one or two people actually took one of the written "guides". Basically we all really just need to tell people to be more aware of doing their own independent research.

Thank goodness for the internet and people like Adam. 15-20 years ago so many more people would be more likely to actually take these things with not as much information at their disposal. I remember being the dorky kid who bought the full books at the pet store and read about animals I didn't even have or plan to get. But I could definitely see a parent who got these animals for their kids taking this home and thinking they'd have the proper care listed. Like Adam said, there's no reason these companies should be so lazy and careless when there's so much useful information elsewhere.

I work at Petsmart because I wanna help people out. I know how outdated Petsmart/Petco are with reptile care so I’ve worked with my coworkers on giving more recent info. I’m glad my store actually tries to improve their knowledge instead of relying on the guides corporate sends us. I never once even used a care guide from work lol, if I don’t know the answer I refer them to several KZbinrs and also different websites they can learn more.

I haven't looked at the care guides, but the products Petsmart sells marked for hamster care, at least, is really sad. The "hamster cages" are tiny or weirdly shaped (hard to clean or for the lil guy to run around in) small wheels, cotton bedding (cotton specifically is dangerous if ingested or tangled in their feet) and so on.

I’m currently an employee of Petsmart as well. I’m here to learn more about the animals I’m sending home with people. I want them to have a good life. A lot of the time, I feel conflicted about the bad sides of this employer but it’s a decent job and all of my coworkers have actually shown care. One altered the protocol slightly. There’s a lot of issues with their care protocols within the store but I’m doing my research so I can find a way to make them comfortable until they’re adopted. I always have hope there are customers who know what they’re getting into. I do my best. I’m learning lots.

I got my bearded dragon when i was fairly young from Petsmart and I wish they even gave me one of these pamphlets, because I was given entirely flat out wrong information. I asked an employee how many vegetables I should be feeding him, and instead of telling me they weren't knowledgeable enough on beardies, i was instead told that crickets and supplements would be enough. He, of course, passed away prematurely. I was young and didn't think to fact check this online, which I regret, but I do know better now. I've devoted myself to researching and learning about reptiles and amphibians so that when I eventually keep them again, I'm knowledgeable on their care and it won't ever happen again. So sad that this happens so often, I've heard stories similar from other people too

It all depends on wattage. The higher the wattage you need to get the temp for your reptile the more it is gonna cost. It would be hard to do a proper comparison because each reptile needs different temperatures and SO many factors go into how much wattage you would need to get the temp required. Size of tank, glass or wood tank, open top or enclosed top, temperature of the actual room the tank is in, type of heating the reptiles needs (heat pads, overhead light, day or night heat) etc etc. For example my apartment is cold in the winter so I need more heat sources for my reptiles in winter and night heat too since the ambient room temperature is so much lower then in the summer. Heat tape and heat pads don't help at this time of year for me since it's the ambient tank temp I need to raise.

The only animal here (the rescued betta died after close to two years) that came from a big box store is Russian Tortoise. I went in to pick cubes of frozen brine shrimp (only place that consistently has them) and saw a really active and responsive which I take is a good sign for any wild caught animal. I felt the need to liberate him before somebody who didn't do their research got him. He's doing fine in his pen now. Climbed out a couple of times but I'll write that off as good health.

I remember my bearded dragon loved having the hot side temp between 110-115, any lower he'd literally throw a fit. I live in south texas so it wasn't hard to keep the temp that high. Man I miss my dude, got him as an adult rescue from a reptile expo and gave him an awesome four years. He's not dead or anything but after that huge texas freeze I nearly lost him so decided to give him to someone who could better deal with emergencies like that. Too many would insist they're fine in a 20gal and ignore all attempts at help and any advice that shows them they need to change the enclosure/care. I remember diligently following the care guide circa late 90s for my corn snake. My grandfather custom built an enclosure that gave it plenty of space. We had the one required hide on the hot end with a heat pad underneath, no lights, and absolutely nothing else in the enclosure except a water dish; just like the care guide told us to do. She almost never came out of the hide. She would stick her head outside the hide whenever my mom made coffee in the morning and she loved being held.

Living in central Texas, this fall been a bit drier than usual. And then came the cold. In my Leo's tank, even with me hand misting 2-3 times a day, the ambient temp about 6" above the substrate was in the upper 20s %!! That was when temps were 30s-40s F. When the highs get up to the 60s, the humidity will rise a good 10%. I couldn't get a mister soon enough, so I got two damp (not wet/dripping) cloth towels and put them across the screen top. Within an hour the RH had risen by about 10-12%. Stabilizes at that point until the towels dry out. For some reason this wasn't really an issue last Fall/Winter. So yes, I have seen low 20s RH in my Leo's enclosure. Scary stuff.

I love these videos! With so many care guides out there, and some that have bad info, it can be difficult to know what’s right and wrong, especially considering we’re always learning more about better care and husbandry. I think that’s why it’s important to look for different sources, articles, videos, and probably most importantly trying to talk directly to people who have cared for these animals. Honestly I have learned a lot just from Facebook groups for specific species, as silly as that may sound.

Adam, you talk about 20% - 30% humidity being unrealistic, but that really depends on where you live. I'm in Edmonton, and the humidity in my room, right now, is about 10%. My arid enclosures are constantly at 0% humidity - it's a struggle to keep my corn snake's enclosure above 40% humidity.

Why Canada decides banning species allowed to be kept by private owners instead of setting standards in animal husbandry and housing is beyond me. It’s a constant battle here in Manitoba. There’s a “reptile gardens” here in Brandon Manitoba and the reptiles are kept in some of the worst conditions I’ve seen, literally deplorable. Yet there’s no laws or enforcement for the husbandry and captive care of such animals and it’s upsetting. I’d assume because situations like this is what animal services and the government is what they are familiar with is why these bans are trying to be put in place.

I definitely would appreciate if you and other reptile KZbinrs stopped by the westman reptile gardens in Brandon Manitoba if your ever passing through. Your jaw will drop on how these animals are kept (the turtles are fed cheap dry cat food). You also do not want to know the conditions the rodents are that he breeds in a separate building, he’s the main supplier of feeders for many pet stores in the province. Sadly, the enclosure size bit is just like using repticarpet. It's for sales. They don't sell enclosures, targeted towards reptiles, larger than a 40 gallon. The kits for juveniles are 20 gallons. The lady at my PetSmart said I could house my beardie for almost a year in it. Me being ignorant, thought it'd give me some time to save up to get a bigger one. So, I bought it. Only to learn it did not come with anything I actually needed. So, I started doing better research. And then quickly realized my girl was out growing it much faster than the lady told me. The lady also told me that it only cost her a couple dollars to feed hers a week. I have no idea what she was feeding hers, but I knew very fast it was gonna cost a lot more. Let's just say, I don't shop there very often anymore. And if I do, it's bc it's something I know I can't get at Petco or the locally owned pet store. A couple of the girls at my Petco have reptiles, and I've seen their setups. They are people you want to trust with your questions. The only upside to me having that 20 gallon, is I have a quarantine tank for smaller reptiles. Maybe eventually I'll buy something small enough that can live in it permanently. But until then, it is just sitting on top of a shelf empty since all my animals are out of quarantine right now.

The reason the care guides say 40 gallons is because that is what they carry or sell. They want to be able to sell more product. Its the same reason why they say reptile carpet, and a lot of other things. You can use it, but it isn't ideal. Realistically, how many people are going to spend $500-700 on a 4 x 2 enclosure for an animal they would be getting for only $25-50, or far less? The reality is that in many areas, chains are the only places people have to go to get supplies without having to ship or buy online, which no one is going to do if they are just entering or are new, or having to wait for wherever their next show may be. Making minimum enclosure sizes larger is not ultimately in the community's best interest in that its a barrier to entry, and also hurts the pet keeping communities.

I remember when I was working at a petsmart and a customer who had just bought their baby beardie came in and showed me the care guide that said to feed 1x daily. They thought that meant one bug daily, for their barely more than a hatchling beardie. Thankfully they were willing to listen to the correct care, but I think my soul left my body when I realized THAT was what we were supposed to recommend to people as opposed to actual, proper care. Being the most competent person in the petcare department there was horrifying. Constant rampant animal abuse, wherever you looked. We had a beardie with a necrotic tail tip that I was begging the managers to take to the vet to get amputated for months (they wouldn't) before my coworker took him home and gave him a PetSmart Approved Setup(tm) while myself and the one other competent petcare person begged her to do better. Two corn snake hatchlings escaped their tanks and the only reason we noticed is because I, who had been there for barely a month, would make the time to actually check on all the reptiles we had so I could notice any issues. I had two different geckos die in my hands, one of which I resuscitated and begged the managers to take to a vet, which of course, never happened. Granted that store also banned us from drinking from water bottles during our shifts so honestly the problems ran VERY deep.

Similarly, they recommend 40 breeders to "beginners" because a "beginner" doesn't want an enclosure half the size of their room. They sell the reptile and the too-small tank to a person who doesn't care to research before hand, and iiiif the person does figure out that their care is lacking and decides to upgrade, they get a second large sale when the person upgrades the enclosure and has to buy all the new equipment to go with it.

When I first got my leopard gecko, I had him on reptile Capet for the first few months since I was still ignorant to the flaws in the care that Petsmart recommends, the thing that sparked me to stop was when I decided to release some crickets for him to hunt, he missed and bit the corner piece of carpet that was sticking up and he got a tooth snagged on it. He freaked out and ripped a tooth out before I could reach in and try to help him. He was fine and it hasn’t caused an issue after the 4 years I’ve had him, but it inspired me to do some hard research online. I’m multiple animals in now and I’ve never taken advice from a pet store, (except for one employee who actually had her own collection that was very well cared for).

Great video! Unfortuntalty, petsmart hires anyone and they don't care that much about their animals to where they'd make sure to hire people with signicant care knowledge. I mentioned it previously, but I'm one of your Canadain fans and I was so shocked to hear about you moving to Texas! No more reptile youtubers (that I watch) that live in Canada! Of course I wish you all the best in your future move and I'm excited to keep watching your videos :)

I work at Petsmart. They do hire too loosely but there is a personality test of sorts and a description of duties in the application process. My interview was thorough. One kid was hired on. First job. He’s starting as a cashier. Everyone starts as a cashier before training in the “Pet Care” department. He sucks at his job as a cashier. He talked to me and said he was interested in petcare. I asked our managers if they were going to train him and they straight up said, “no, he’s not ready.” Which they were super right because he no-call-no-showed a few times. There is some sort of screening… I’m actually lucky my store actually cares about the animals. We all do our research, one coworker was a vet tech, has extensive knowledge of reptiles and has a small zoo at home. She’s also the dog trainer. My manager is a whiz on animals. It’s almost scary how much she knows. Two are practically experts on fish. It all depends on the actual store, but I agree, Petsmart doesn’t really know what they’re doing when it comes to caring about their animal “stock.” Or their instructions. I’m always conflicted about working for them because of some of their practices. And the fact that most of the donations received do directly into the CEOs wallets.

@@shellbee8098 i totally understand! some petsmarts try very hard to hire people who will be/are good at animal care. it’s really good to know that your experience with them has been great and that management seems to be very good as well! unfortunately, i’ve had a lot of friends have personal work experiences with petsmarts, and most of the time they were the only person who knew any animal care and were almost always reprimanded for telling customers animal care that isn’t the exact same petsmart animal care guides. i am canada and we have a much less known exotic animal hobby, so that might definitely be a contributor.

Yea, the care guides are bad but in a lot places only have petco or pet smart to get supplies. The reality is they have a lot of great stuff that we wouldn’t have access to otherwise. My corn just got a 25 gallon enclosure with substrate and heat mat from my local chains. I literally couldn’t find an appropriate enclosure online or trust it to be shipped.

I work at PetSmart and I would make sure to educate people and if they refused to do the correct care I would not sell them the animal. Even the fish I would refuse to sell if it was not proper. I work in the salon now so unfortunately I can't teach people, but I made sure to educate the new hirers.

I went to get a 40 gallon Exo-terra for my corn snake that I was getting and when the clerk asked what I was getting and told him he acted like he was an expert and said it was going to be to big that a 20 gallon would be perfect for her entire life🙄. I said did you read that off the pamphlet because those are laughable. Long story short I needed the tank and left angry because he seriously thought he knew what he was talking about and that I was all kinds of wrong. FYI she will get a 4x2x2 eventually. Right now she’s just a yearling, I love her and she is my favorite of the 5 snakes I have. Moral to the story I can’t stand Petsmart and I do my best to not buy anything there.

Imagine the difficulty of working in a box pet store and trying to explain to people that the care guides they provide are horrible. I worked at a PetCo for years and it was a daily struggle trying to give people proper care information while contradicting the terrible guides they provided. I'd have to walk away and grab somebody else to sell an animal to someone who I was confident wouldn't give their animals the care they not only need, but deserve.

Their care guides for other pets and their kits for certain animals suck too. Like labeling a 5 gallon kit for goldfish even though they get massive. Selling the crappy plastic hamster cages even though they need to be put in atleast a 20 gallon enclosure. The kits are honestly the worst because an unknowing person sees it labeled for a certain pet and buys it blindly.

1:48 So what is the real average lifespan of a captive bearded dragon that is properly cared for? Because a quick online search reveals a big range of answers, but none I saw indicate that you can reach 15 years by "barely trying," rather 15 is regarded as the upper range of average ages (5 to 15 years, with a lot of places seeming to say 10 simply because it is midway between those numbers), with 18 being a max. I've never kept them myself, but was surprised at the lack of concrete answers.
@SohiHien

I think so few have been properly cared for up until this point that we simply don't know yet what an average is. Reptile care has really been improving in the last few years so it will take a bit before people start seeing the results of this better care.
