When I first played this, when I chased the pagan into the crypt, the doors didn't open, they just slowly FLEW UP INTO THE SKY. Having Garrett say 'I wasn't expecting that' made me think it was a deliberate, if odd, choice. The next time I played the level, it opened normally, and Garrett saying 'I wasn't expecting that' blew my tiny mind.

@@FirstnameLastname-py3bc I blame it on me constantly wanting to break invisible walls, but in the secret passageway there's a rock slide you can climb on and behind it is Truart's family's graves with a dug one open with his name on it. You can take his body and dump it in there as a hidden objective. On expert, if you clean up Benny's mead spill with a water arrow one of the trophy heads opens up with loot inside.

You access the same secret on Normal and Hard by bullseyeing the target, as the designers have done a few other times in T1 and T2. EXPERT, on the other hand, requires you to clean up. The game actually draws your eye by having the spilled cup be lootable, so you're going to be looking right at the spill, which isn't something you usually see.

16:02 - 16:27 Not gonna lie, that was actually pretty damn intense (and hilarious). That thing is FAST and big, which is one of my biggest fears in games actually. Spiders? Got over it a long time ago. Scary underwater monsters? Bearable most of the time. Big thing that will most likely destroy me if it catches me and of course it's quick? Fuck that. Part of me believes that Mutated Rancor from Jedi Academy put that terror in me when I was little.

@@ArnieMcStranglehold it’s not Unreal 1. Thief 1&2 and System Shock 2 are all Dark engine games which was similar to the version of Unreal 1 used for Deus Ex but the code itself is slightly less jank.

@@CollinandBri I think the character models give it away. They have this... stretchy quality to them, nonskeletal with some texture warping. Stands out more in SS2. Whereas the human models in Deus Ex look blockier and move more symmetrically IIRC. I feel like dark engine human models have a very particular and unique uncanny valley to them. It makes the SS2 mutants kinda more terrifying tho, I remember kinda talking down about the models in the tutorial section when I played it first in middle school, then nearly pissing when a mutant came at me with a pipe, the way the model distorted was like something out of a Cronenberg movie. With that tube on the side of the head it remains one of the most iconic video game models in my memory (I further digress but I'd also love a new system shock game).
