She withheld food as punishment, didn’t let her oldest son have a room for almost a year, and blatantly terrorized her children LONG before Jodie came along. Kevin was there for all of that. Jodie is a monster but she didn’t influence Ruby; they just found a common bond out of hurting children.

Exactly! Kevin even supported Ruby at one point when the Internet was coming after her for her punishment tactics. He said that he agreed with them and that she was A-OK with her parenting technique. He essentially gave up when he walked out of the kids lives for 14 months, if that was so easy for him to do, I don’t see why he should get them back now.

Jody's been around way longer than you think. Sending Chad to wilderness camp was Jody's idea. Taking his bedroom away was too. Ruby even used that as an excuse for the backlash at the time, saying she wasn't wrong for following a professional therapist's advice. Chad even mentions Jody as his therapist by name once in a video. That video about Eve forgetting her lunch, Ruby is using Jody's lingo too. Jody's been around just as long as Ruby's channel almost, but her influence grew with time. Ruby's still guilty, though.

Honestly, Kevin Franke SHOULD NOT have access to those kids. My mother both mentally and physically abused me, and my father was complacent. In my book, my father was equally responsible. Kevin is NO savior, and should be kept far, far away from those kids. Let those kids heal. Keep them BOTH away!

I pray to God that Kevin does not get custody of those kids, he was just as much involved as Ruby was. The fact that he walked out on his kids only for the sake of Ruby, and then attempted to press charges on his oldest child makes me feel like, he’s protecting himself and possibly Ruby. Both of those people who dare call themselves parents do not deserve these kids.

I hate hate hate the fact that so many people and her team have decided to solely blame Jodi as if Ruby wasn't a total dumpster fire before. That woman was always abusive, she did not get manipulated into escalation, she just found a partner in crime who she could be her true self around, and that gave her the endless validation that she so desperately craved. They are both demented, and they both should rot in prision.

TRO did a video on it and his theory was that Ruby shopped around until she found Jodi because they enabled her abuse instead of challenged her. Which is something I agree with.
@MadeOfQuestions
@MadeOfQuestions 8 ай бұрын
Jodi was actually recommended to Ruby by her brother and his wife. She didn't shop around... and Jodi actually moved into the Franke home for over a year. If anyone was Jodi's prey, it was Ruby. Ruby was perfect for Jodi. Jodi wanted Ruby's platform of millions of viewers, with her morman background and willingness to go along with the purity culture and abuse it was just a perfect storm. Jodi had diagnosed psychopathic tendencies and narcissistic personality, according to Jessi. When you combine those disorders with a psych degree, 0 accountability, and no soul, you're bound to get some terribly manipulating behavior. Ruby is 100% responsible for what she did and allowed to happen to her kids. Jodi is 100% responsible for everything she's done as a licensed mental health therapist over the decades. I just don't think Ruby was looking for someone to validate her abuse. I'm pretty sure Jodi was looking to use Ruby's platform tho
@lactofermentation
@lactofermentation 8 ай бұрын
IMO, it doesn't matter how much influence Jodi had: Ruby duct taped her her younger children's limbs, locked them in a room, then starved and dehydrated them. There's something wrong with anyone who thinks that's anything less than unforgivable.
@krisl6537
@krisl6537 8 ай бұрын
@@MadeOfQuestions the only thing I'd disagree on is that Ruby was Jodi's prey. You see, that feeds into the mindset that Ruby was manipulated by Jodi and also places her in a victim's position. Ruby is NOT a victim, she was starving, abusing, and isolating her children way before Jodi came into the picture. If anything, they were a perfect storm because they both found a completely like-minded person, they fed off each other.
@belinus7180
@belinus7180 8 ай бұрын
It's a legal trick to try and show that Ruby lacked "mens rea" or "guilty mind". In this case, her defense is essentially "I was just following orders." Problem is there just some things, like depriving your children of food/water, that are patently wrong. Especially since Ruby could have easily verified Jodi was giving her sound strategies with a simple call to the family doctor's PA.

Shit like this is PRECISELY the reason why we should ALWAYS be skeptical of “strict parenting.” There’s a very fine line between being strict and being abusive. If you want your children to be well-behaved, you can achieve that while treating your children with respect; withholding food, adequate shelter, threatening violence, etc. isn’t being strict, it’s just straight up abuse.
@Infantfaire
@Infantfaire 8 ай бұрын
I will never forget a time I was at a restaurant with my toddler. Without assistance my child turned to the waitress and said “I’d like a glass of orange juice please.” She was startled and asked me “How did you do that?” I was confused. Are toddlers not confident to order food and do so politely? It was the respectful politeness. She wanted to know how I taught that to my toddler. It’s simple, he hears “please” said to him. He knows what politeness feels like and so he gives it to others. Violence doesn’t solve problems, it creates them

It's why the hardline fundagelical parenting philosophy espoused by the likes of Mike and Debi Pearl and James Dobson is inherently abusive, regressive, and harmful, even when it's phrased in sweet, civilized-sounding language and backed up with Bible verses. A person who thinks that their child is an innately wicked being who must be brought to heel or else they will someday burn for eternity in Hell is not going to treat their child with the humanity, consideration, compassion, and tenderness they need and deserve. Or, in other words, don't take parenting advice from a dude who once beat a dachsund with a belt for wanting to sleep next to the heater on a cold night instead of in his doggie bed.

Whats crazy is that “strict parenting” never works. Children always end up more sneaky abd secretive. Most children never feel comfortable talking to their parents and end up being the most wild adults be because their parents restricted them too much. Most of those kids lack social skills, due to the lack of their parents not letting them have the will to make their own decisions.

Growing up I studied in Christian schools until I graduated high school. I always found things to be pushed onto students a lot of the time. There was one occasion where the principal did not allow the girls to bring a female date to prom (whether it's as friends or as a partner), she explained this as this was an opportunity for us to have co-ed interaction, but the motive was clear. It was only when the cohort rioted about it that the rule was changed. This experience plus most interactions I had with religious people made me extremely cautious and distant against them, especially with Christians

Not only that, but he managed to keep a terrifed child there (despite how he was probably counting every second he was gone and had every intention to sneak back) and get as much information possible about the siblings so he could relay that to 911. It's everything that happened in the unreported time before and between that really tells you his character. He probably gave that kid the closest feeling of being safe since he could remember. That's *true* heroism.

Ive known my dad was abusive towards me since i was a little kid arguing with a friend that he wasnt on Omegle, but its still so validating now as an adult to hear that the things he did were abusive and manipulative. Sometimes, I get stuck in my head, only remember the good memories, and start gaslighting myself onto believing I was just being dramatic. My dad kicked me out last year and Im hoping to move states away from him in the upcoming nonths and, with the help of a friend, go to college. Thanks for keeping me strong and giving me the hope to continue Swoop 💕

Alot of kids grow up without their own room or bed, etc... but the difference is with those kids it's out of necessity/ making the best out of a poor financial situation. And to be further clear, I worked in cps, and a child not having a room isn’t something a child is taken away for, or the parents to be shamed for. It’s something that would result in hunting down a cheap bed and hopefully a donated decent mattress 😅 BUT the intentional removal of access to a bed is literal and by no means hyperbolic, abuse. I once looked after a kid the parents intentionally blocked access to their bedroom, let me tell you the judge definitely wasn’t shy to name it abuse

Not a trauma therapist, but have been through lots of trauma therapy. Unfortunately, young or not, those kids will be affected for life whether or not they remember all the details of what they went through. These kinds of experiences rewire your brain, change the way it functions, impacts the nervous system and infiltrates your physical and mental responses on a core level. You’re so right when you say the body keeps score! My 30 yr old daughter in law is still dealing with all the damage that comes along with a selfish, emotionally abusive, alcoholic parent and the other is completely checked out & hides from it all. There are times where I tell her she needs to create boundaries or nothing will ever change, but I honestly don’t think she is there yet because of the endless guilt pushed on her. I also don’t want to push too hard and cause her even more anxiety. As a parent, all I have ever wanted was to raise my kids to be confident & happy so they could grow into a healthy adult. I truly don’t understand how a parents can do this to their own flesh & blood.

@justagirllookingup I HIGHLY recommend the book Adult Children of Emotionally Immature Parents: How to Heal from Distant, Rejecting, Or Self-Involved Parents by Lindsay C. Gibson. I know you say hopefully her Littles will not have this be a formative memory for them, but as a single father of an 8 year old with diagnosed PTSD from visitation with her biological paternal parent, it will. My baby girl suffered atrocities far less than the Frankie kids, thankfully, but sometimes things like being alone in a room, a raised voice, the sound of running water, or the smell of vinegar is enough to make us call the local "behavioral health" (their term for mental health) crisis line to get her an emergency appointment. This kind of thing WILL follow them all their lives, unfortunately. Hopefully, the extent of the trauma doesn't remain the same strength in them forever, but I can assure you they'll never forget.

I feel like kids really do have much harder time dealing with trauma since their brains are not fully developed and they lack the tools to properly process the situation. I know it myself, I still feel tons of anxiety when I hear someone stomping or cleaning up the dishes a little too loud, and I completely freeze and involuntarily stop breathing when I feel like I am in trouble (as an adult, I obviously do not get into “trouble”…). It is so so hard to be pulled back into the past in these instances so I am heartbroken for everyone who experiences something similar. I hope Ruby’s children will get the help they need asap and I wish you and your little girl a ton of luck and strength in dealing with this ❤

Sadly and respectfully I disagree that she never wanted to have kids. It is an incredibly unfortunate reality that many people become parents because they see it as a way to enforce their complete and utter will over another person and that power trip makes them feel good and in control. Especially when Ruby recounted the time when he two oldest kids were small and she left them watching TV so she could sleep and when she woke up she found that they disobeyed her and she disciplined them. It's very probable she didn't even realize she didn't want kids due to religious indoctrination until later, if ever. I grew up in a conservative Mormon household. I met my ex-husband at an LDS college at 19, married at 20. Dropped out of college for my husband's job offer. Had my first kid at 23 after 2 years of infertility, and my second baby at 25. I didn't even realize I was bisexual until 27, that's how indoctrinated I was into the ways the way The Church wanted me to live. I left The Church around the same time, for a wide variety of reasons. My kids did not grow up indoctrinated. But it will last with me for my life. Back to Ruby, I don't know if she never wanted to be a mom, or if she wishes she had waited to have them, and have fewer. I wish I had finished a bachelor's or higher in education and worked a bit before having my two kids. But, I had to work my way out of my religion to even consider that. And by then it was too late.

She wrote written physical proof that SHE threatened and has hurt her kids. They just used their relationship as a crutch, to do wrong. These people are far from Godly. As a survivor of CA that was ongoing (0-17 years)... the age of the kids matters only in that, during the formative years, of you fail to bond with your children in certain ways, they will never be able to fill the hole that is left. C-PTSD goes into a lot of it. Even the kids that witnessed it will be severely effected for the rest of their lives. Attachment disorders will be an issue, as well as trust issues, depression, anxiety, nightmares, being in a constant state of alert...etc. On top of that, they will have difficulty trusting any adult or therapist, which will make therapy incredibly difficult. I wish them being young was some sort of boon, but it's worse. So so much worse. Those poor kids. (I'm speaking from experience, so take it as you will)

It is unfathomable to me as a parent that Ruby put her children that she carried inside of her, experienced the trauma of childbirth for, raised through sleepless nights as newborns, etc. through such horrific abuse. She is getting off easy by avoiding an attempted murder charge for what she admits to doing to her son. I am heartbroken for those babies, and I desperately hope that extensive therapy and a loving, kind home is available to them.

The part that hurts me the most is that there are so many people that desperately want to be parents or those who beat themselves up over the smallest things while parenting and being absolutely terrified to make a mistake with the fear that they will mess up their kids and this woman caused harm to her children on purpose. She manipulated and inflicted pain and trauma upon her children out of her own free will and made them believe they deserved it because they were evil, how sick. I hope her kids can heal from this.

Not gonna lie. The cult feel of Hildebrandt's little operation was about as subtle as a load of bricks to the face. That said, Franke was like this before running into Hildebrandt, which leads to the rather easy conclusion that she joined the cult because it validated her already-held beliefs.

Their content covers their life together, their love story, IVF experience, renovating a house together, fitness and body positivity, dealing with the changes of having a newborn around, and general life in Norway. He was manipulated by Jodi into believing that 0 contact was best for the kids. He was told that it’s what would get his marriage and family back. Jodi did the exact same schtick with Adam, his wife and their kids. Plus had he been involved in any of the physical abuse, he’d be awaiting sentencing alongside Jodi & Ruby or at least arrested by now. I’m not saying he’s a good father or even a good person by any means. Just that this was a thing Jodi did to husbands. She separated and isolated them from their families.

It's just mind-boggling that they probably would've kept getting away with it if one of the kids didn't run away until someone ended up dead. I hope they get what's been coming to them, it's just hard for me to process all that damage.

Hi Swoop! Love your work! I'm a therapist and have studied trauma in children. I do wish it was this way for kids too that they can "bounce back" because they're young. Unfortunately it tends to be the opposite. The younger that kids are (even in utero), but especially within the first 1 to 3 years of life, if they experience trauma or neglect, that can be significantly more impactful on their brain development than at any other time in life. If you want a good book rec, read The Boy Who Was Raised as a Dog by Dr. Bruce Perry. He also wrote one with Oprah that you might enjoy titled What Happened to You?

I was a probation officer for the state of Florida. I wrote several PSIs (pre-sentence investigations), and they are EXTREMELY thorough. They will be looking through Ruby's vlogs and anything else they can find online. She's screwed. Well, let me rephrase. She's screwed IF the judge takes their recommendation. They took mine only about 15% of the time, so it all depends on the judge in the end.

@@ReviewsAndMore9 you're telling me. after spending weeks on PSIs, there's nothing more infuriating edit: to add more insight, this rule also applied to people i was supervising. if they violated their probation and i sent the report to the court with my recommendation, the judge always had the final say. i've recommended my offenders go back to prison, only to face them in my office the next day. it's a bit unsettling when the system doesn't listen to the officers they hire. it's why i left the position. probation officers have to have degrees because of all the reports they write, we know our offenders the best because we work with them personally and already have a thorough understanding of how they operate, so it's not like we're idiots. we train for months before even stepping foot in the office. HOWEVER, a judge will look at things through their own lens. sometimes you get a good judge who knows how to be objective and sometimes you don't. like the lawyer in swoop's video points out, ruby is a first time offender. as heinous as her crime is, she's not a threat to the community as a whole (in a violent way) and it's unlikely she'll do much time. the prisons are overcrowded and ruby franke is not a dangerous felony lifer. as much as i wish she'd go away for 20 years, this probably won't go much differently than how the judge handled similar charges in the past. my prediction is... to be bleak, maybe 5 years. it sucks, but so does our system.

I've watched victims of abuse go through atrocious abuse and still, repeatedly, forgive their abuser. When it's your mother, it can be impossible to just cut them loose. I've seen how damaging it has been to keep forgiving an actively abusive family member - no exceptions. It's very easy to say you don't forgive when you're the outsider, but when you've literally known nothing else for most or all of your life, it is so hard to keep that energy up. I wish her children freedom. I wish them peace. And I hope they find justice.

As an Exmormon and victim of parental abuse, I worry that the kids won't be able to heal in their current environment. The Mormon culture has a huge emphasis on family, to the point that you're expected to endure abuse to keep the family together. I was told (AS A CHILD) that I had to forgive my abusers (my parents), or I WOULD BE JUST AS BAD AS THEY WERE. There's literally a book written by a previous prophet called "The Miracle of Forgiveness," which instructs abuse victims to consider "their role in the abuse" and repent for it. These kids will be pressured by family and their church to forgive their mother before they are ready (if they are EVER ready), and be told that God condemns them for not doing so, that they are being not Christlike by choosing not to forgive, and that they must repent from their (JUSTIFIABLE) anger toward an authority figure who should've protected them. I don't think they'll be able to process their grief, pain, and anger in a healthy way until they're out of the church.

I think that statement from Jennifer Franke is so gross. What does she mean "what happened to her [Ruby's] children". What happened to them? These aren't random forces. Ruby pleaded guilty, she is sitting there in the courtroom saying 'I did this to my kids' and the family is still so detached from the actions. Say it like it is: Ruby Franke stood before the court to plead guilty to what SHE DID to her children.

49:35 my thing is, even under the assumption that they COULD completely rehabilitate and no longer pose any risk (which I would still like to believe is possible, although improbable), I don't believe that anyone who has completely rehabilitated after having done what Franke has, would every willingly have a vulnerable person in their care again. If she claims that she has changed "enough," and tries to take care of kids again, then *_no she has not._* she should have no desire to be in charge of any child if she ever truly changes.

Agreed. Ruby Franke would need to confront some pretty painful and ugly stuff within herself and her personal history in order to truly and genuinely appreciate the gravity and meaning of her own actions and the profound harm she's caused. As it stands, I worry that at worst, she merely feels shame and regret that she was caught, and at best, she thinks that the problem was with the tactics she employed with her kids, and not with the toxic emotions, beliefs, motives, and philosophy that informed those tactics. Ruby Franke *might* theoretically be capable of this necessary reflection and change---but, whether she'll ever actually seize that latent potential is another story, and she'd need to start by not just trying to pass the buck o' blame to Jodi Hildebrandt. My gut read of Jodi Hildebrandt is that she's characterologically incapable of genuine compassion, self-reflection, and remorse, and that she'll go to her grave seething about everyone else's "distortions."

I’m gonna venture they did this because they didn’t want more horrific details to emerge during a trial. Also, it seems like Ruby and Jodi being separated in jail caused the spell to break between them. I’m still of the mind that they were in a brainwashy romantic relationship.
