Never knew she was a child star as well. Wonderful artist. Thank you!

🎊 “Downtown” (1965), “Don’t Sleep In The Subway” (1967) and “I Know A Place” (1965) were jukebox hits in the 60’s. She was one of the quintessential female voices of her generation!!!

She’s a legend! Clark's professional career began during the Second World War as a child entertainer on BBC Radio.[1] In 1954, she charted with "The Little Shoemaker", the first of her big UK hits, and within two years she began recording in French. Her international successes have included "Prends mon cœur", "Sailor" (a UK number one), "Romeo", and "Chariot". Hits in German, Italian and Spanish followed. In late 1964, Clark's success extended to the United States with a four-year run of career-defining, often upbeat singles, many written or co-written by Tony Hatch and Jackie Trent. These include her signature song "Downtown" (US number one), "I Know a Place", "My Love" (US number one), "A Sign of the Times", "I Couldn't Live Without Your Love", "Who Am I", "Colour My World", "This Is My Song" (by Charlie Chaplin; a UK number one), "Don't Sleep in the Subway", "The Other Man's Grass Is Always Greener" and "Kiss Me Goodbye". Between January 1965 and April 1968, Clark charted with nine US top 20 hits in the US, where she was sometimes called "the First Lady of the British Invasion". Clark has sold more than 68 million records.[2] She has also enjoyed success in the musical film Finian's Rainbow, for which she received a Golden Globe nomination for best actress in a musical, and in the stage musicals The Sound of Music, Blood Brothers, Sunset Boulevard and Mary Poppins. Also honored by the Queen She just turned 92 & still Sings .

Petula was one of the biggest female stars of the 60s and 70s and had several big hits in the UK and also her own TV show. Check out Harry Secome’s version which was released at the same time and was also a big hit.

The instrument is a mandolin. This was written by Charles Chaplin for the soundtrack of his final film "A Countess From Hong Kong" 1967.

This song was written by the famous Silent movie star Charlie Chaplin....in 1966. He talked Petula into doing the song, it became a giant hit.

Petula is 91 i believe performing occasionally from the UK.One of the greatest singers ever. Downtown in 65 was her biggest hit. Dont Sleep in the Subway, I know a Place are very good also , plus more. I was fortunate to have grown up in the 60s to me ond of the greatest decades for music, much upbeat, positive songs tho a great variety most genres were on the charts the same time.

My Mother passed away two years ago, and her favorite Petula Clark song was “Downtown.” I downloaded the song as a ringtone, and assigned it just to her, so whenever she called me, “Downtown” is what I heard and I smiled. But Ace, this is a truly beautiful song written by the great silent screen star, Charlie Chaplin. Another song by Petula Clark you should react to is “A Sign of the Times.”

The Petula Clark hits you should do are Downtown and Don't Sleep in the Subway. Also, Colour My World is good. I went to see the Ed Sullivan Show when it came to the World's Fair in Montreal in 1967, and Petula Clark was one of the guests. I saw her perform live again about four decades later. She is wonderful. She was also a close friend of Karen Carpenter's.
