You know, it makes you all wonder: If Petunia did not grow to hate her sister, Lily, out of jealousy and resentment, she could have possibly been part of the magical world in some way. Like she could've met, fallen in love with, and even marry a wizard that Lily personally know, and have children with him that grow to become witches and wizards. In fact, that could be an interesting idea for a Harry Potter video subject.

She was a flawed character and her mistreatment of Harry is inexcusable, but you can’t blame her for being jealous. If snape’s hatred of Harry is forgiven, then Petunia too deserves redemption, since they were both acting out of jealousy and grief

happy baby I agree that he didn’t hate harry. But we have to remember why he ended up with the death eaters in the first place. When James made fun of him on the train for liking slytherin, he was immediately made an outcast, and separated from lily that very evening when she went to gryffindor. James’ bullying from the beginning made him feel like he needed to belong somewhere, hence he turned to those in his own house. Years of suffering and regret later, he is Harry’s teacher. And while yes he’s horrible to the students and there’s no excuse for that, we have to remember that in the books we see him from Harry’s biased perspective, and I think Alan understood that since JKR had told him the full story. That’s why I believe the movies are a more accurate representation of his character. I could go on about him all day, the more you think about it the more you realize and question!!

It doesn’t justify their actions but it does make them human. And you have to have a little bit of sympathy for them. Because ultimately their actions do come from a place of brokeness and pain. Even though it doesn’t excuse their actions, you have to acknowledge that they aren’t pure evil and underneath the hard bitterness, rudeness, resentment, even deeper behind the brokeness and depression and loneliness and feelings of rejection, there might just be a heart.

Question: do you have a video on why Harry wasn't an obscural? He fits the bill perfectly. Neglected and abused because he was magical and unloved by his adoptive parents for 10 years. Why didn't he develop an obscurial? Do you think it's because Petunia secretly loved him and somehow despite the abuse it magically didn't work? Or perhaps because the concept wasn't known to Joanne at the time so she didn't realize her retcon was going to become a plot hole?
@YellowBear-kx1ff4 жыл бұрын
Payperheirplain I know the answer to THAT one and it comes down to ignorance. The Dursleys never told Harry he could do magic, so Harry had no idea he had ANYTHING to suppress. Harry’s first 15 months was in a loving, nurturing, very magical household. His brain developed normally, and a baby's brain is a sponge. Everything for a happy life ahead was already wired up. The neglect that verged upon abuse managed not to affect him too much, and in more traumatising moments, magic, unseen and unknown, came to his rescue.
@rug45652 жыл бұрын
He doesn't fit it perfectly, it's not the abuse that makes you an obscurial, it's when a witch/wizard actively surpresses and denies their own magic... But yeah, this suppression can be the result of them being the victim of abuse and them deciding: I need to surpress the magic

Re-watching the movies after knowing this scene, taking more detail on them, when Vernon's sister appears and starts berating Harry's mom, Petunia does seem not so pleased, it can be noticed her closing and operning her fist, with a rather grim look, avoiding contact with her and forcing a bit of a smile. This little scenes when you realize looking back, she never hated her sister.

What I wonder is how they treated Harry when he was a baby. Because it just makes my heart boil to think a baby could be mistreated. Also, in the Spanish editions of the book, in the fourth book something like "Altough one couldn't say that Dursley's mistreated Harry, they also never treated him like a son".
@hollyhartwick38324 жыл бұрын
This description of Petunia reminds me a lot of Kureha from SAO Fatal Bullet. The growing jealousy and spite for a sister who got attention for being exceptional. With both characters, this sense of living in their sisters’ shadows was entirely self-inflicted because they were obsessed with comparing themselves to others rather than being and accepting themselves as they are.

I read a story somewhere where it was Mother's day (Dudley and Harry were still small like 3-4 years old) and Dudley gave Petunia a Flower (I think it was a rose) that he picked from somewhere and greeted his Mum a Happy Mother's Day and when Harry saw it he too, picked a certain flower and gave it to Petunia and greeted her too. Petunia quickly went inside the house with the flower still clutched in her hand and started to cry because the flower Harry gave to him was, A Lily. Tbh, there's a high chance this happened, because Petunia knows that deep inside her heart, she still loves Lily and misses her everyday.

I felt so bad for her learning she convinced herself as a coping mechanism that she hated the world deep-down she only wanted to be a part of, it honestly feels so real it had me on the verge of a tear almost. But then again, her jealousy made her lash out in a pretty horrible way so that can't be overlooked.

@VintageRubyFilms4 жыл бұрын
@@jenniflower6569 Not immediately. I can't remember the exact time length between events, but Sirius didn't have his confrontation with Peter Pettigrew until at least a day or so after Voldemort killed the Potters. It didn't take him long to realize what must have happened (ie, Pettigrew snitched to Voldemort and broke his trusted position as the Potters' secret keeper) but his encounter with Peter that resulted in the apparent death of Pettigrew and the event that framed him for murder couldn't have happened for at minimum several hours after James and Lily were killed. Even if Hagrid had given Harry to Sirius immediately, I doubt the end result would've been different than the books show. Sirius was too loyal a friend to James and Lily, and so I think he'd still have gone after Peter, and then the only other option would have been to give Harry to the Dursleys anyway.
@tieechon75264 жыл бұрын
So if sirius was with Harry and harry was alive it would be pretty hard to convince anyone that sirius wanted him dead therefore he doesn't get framed as the traitor. Harry alive with sirius couldve went to dumbledore and explained the secret keeper switch keeping him out of azkaban Plus the protection from lily might have been able to extend to sirius since he was the godfather (the person chosen to take care of harry by his parents in case of the worst case scenario)

Fascinating that she felt so hurt that her family praised Lilly for being magical and she got neglected and so with Dudley and Harry, she made sure the opposite was true. Also in regards to Dudley going to public school and Harry supposedly going to a state school (before Hogwarts came into play) just like Petunia wasn’t allowed to go to Hogwarts.

All things aside, there could be absolutely no excuse for mistreating a child for what his parents did. He just can't be chosen as the one to suffer. None of the past was his choice or happened by his will. Harry didn't even know that what feelings did his aunt bear for his mother or why Snape was jealous of his father, he ofcourse eventually became aware of it but what about the mistreatment he tolerated until that point. Being rude to a child who didn't even know about the love of parents and the warm feeling of being a family.That is seriously some rotten, hard core thing to do.

Great hypothesis and I do agree with you. Further to your thoughts and comments, I remember reading at the beginning of the final book that Dudley Dursley, Harry's cousin and nemesis walked over to Harry, took his hand, and shook it before he and his parents had to evacuate the house for their own safety. His uncle Vernon called Harry a 'good for nothing', and while shaking his hand, Dudley said, "I don't think you're good for nothing". Harry smiled and said, "look after yourself, Big D". It's a shame that editing cut that out. It's probably one of the most important things that have happened to Harry - feeling some love and acceptance from his own relatives on his mother's side.

I never once thought she hated Harry, I think she loved him to the point where she wanted to hide the truth from him. It's common in family situations for that to occur. I always thought when she found out about her sisters death, she was angry at herself, I believe she wanted to protect Harry, she was a meek woman, Vernon he was an obnoxious rude man who would easily snap to violence. I think she might of protected Harry from that, I feel like Rowling dropped the ball with her character, especially the final scene with Lily, how good would of it been if Petunia and Lily had a real chance to say goodbye, to say they love each other, to explain her situation to Harry. It wouldn't of been hard to get them there, hello a legion of dark wizard's, you're telling me none of them thought to use his family against him?? It could of also played into how she always wanted too see Hogwarts, Molly could of had some choice words with her. I know people are going to say but muggles can't find Hogwarts, yes they can't find it, doesn't mean they can't be taken to it. Like I said big missed opportunity for this character, hell people about Cho and Dudley, what if he saved her from a dark wizard, by throwing a rock, tackling him or something. Last time you see the family together Vernon gives Harry the I was wrong look. Vernon's only perception about the magical community was from Petunia, Petunia was full of jealousy and regret, Dudley was caught in the middle.

It’s kind of like winning a sport or a game, and this saying comes up “First Is The Worst, Second Is The Best, Etc.” The person saying it doesn’t believe that the winners are horrible or unskilled, they just wanted to be a winner themselves... If Petunia was a wizard, she wouldn’t insult wizards, and would actually be more prominent to insult muggles.. Just as if someone was a winner, they wouldn’t insult other winners, they would be more prominent to insult the losers.

So many are kinda trying to make up "excuses" for the actions of those characters. As Petunia saying that her attitude was natural, or it was ok for Snape to act like a total asshole in the books since then he was "a nice guy". Nope. I don't care what trauma they had: (Petunia and her delusion/sisterhate or Snape with his broken family...) They were adults and knew better than to bullshit around. as bullying and abusing a little children or "if lily-wasnt-in danger I would still be a nazi-death eater" And this is the reason why I liked the books actually 😂 In the film they were always trying to make some childish "at the end everyone was good" crap. This is why they needed to cut that deleted clip of Petunia's remorse.
@rug45652 жыл бұрын
I agree with many points you say but not with "childish at the end everyone was good". Just my opinion/interpretation but I would have loved to see the deleted Petunia scene because it develops/explains her character. Yes, sad past doesn't excuse anything indeed, however, I think the books and movies did do a good job by adding such things. It made the characters human, and not just evil or good. Because that's how it is in real life as well, not black and white but often rather grey. I think such backstories show how little close attention we pay to people around us. We overlook their struggles, or diminish their struggles and then saying: this person is just purely evil. The villain Voldemort gives a great example of what "pure evil" looks like. Voldemort was simply destined to become evil looking at his "sad past" while Petunia or Snape had a chance to be good and evil based on their "sad past". JKR shows us different types of evil and good and examples of pure evil so that we can see the difference. To me that's evidence that she doesn't excuse everything with "at the end everyone was good", quite the opposite. At least in my opinion. You are entitled to your own of course, don't see this as an attack please🙏 Guess you have your fair and good reasons to perceive it as childish excuses...
@thibaultweber96534 жыл бұрын
No, that doesn't change my perception of her. Feeling rejected wasn't a reason to treat Harry the way she did. He was an innocent baby, he was not responsible for her didn't have any magic.
@michellerhodes99103 жыл бұрын
I think she was always a conflicted character; there is evidence in the books for that especially the evening of the Dementor attack when Harry informs that Voldemort is back and 'becomes very aware that Petunia is his mother's sister'. At that moment it broke down years of reserve and he got a glimpse of a different person - even if it didn't last long.

Petunia at least gave Harry a place in which he could call "home where the blood of his mother dwelled," in which helped Harry carry out his mission to destroy the darkest wizard of all time. Marge however would have doomed Harry and would have been on the receiving end of endless Howlers from not only Albus but everyone in the magical world for dooming the famous boy who lived. Petunia actually cared for Harry though she did not show it. Keep in mind that Harry kept a soul-sucking fiend from destroying her only son, and put her foot down firmly when Vernon wanted to put him out of the house. What would have changed Petunia's mind entirely in my mind if Harry had mentioned the cure for the dementor attack by saying that Dudley would feel much better if he was given chocolate.

the movies not only also have tried to address this idea and about Harry's cousin, Dudley, actually being more complex and even slightly better characters than they were at the books or at most of the movies, but the scenes with Petunia addressing she actually missed her sister, and Dudley having a better bonding with Harry to finally understand and accept him and somehow apologize wishing him luck while good-bye to him too, could have done a lot more for the Dursley, except by Vernon, better in the end. (Kinda all that was eventually hinted for the Epilogue of the books where Dudley actually kept bonds with Harry after his father died.)

Just a thought please don't throw chairs
