I know what you mean about small 'GTIs'' many years ago my 'daily' was a yellow Fiat Cinquecento Sporting. It only had a 1.1 litre engine but was so light and very agile...and so easy to work on. Sadly, despite my best efforts, the ravages of winter road gritting took its toll on it. And I missed it very much! Now that I am retired my 'daily' is again a small agile car in a similar spirit to the Cinquecento Sporting: a 2021 Fiat Panda 4x4 Twinair. 'Power to the pocket-rockets'. Thank you for another excellent video.

You can try machining the drums , take them to the machinist and ask him to leave little bit rougher surface (we used to do this on truck drum brakes) it will be better , also they often distort from heat/cooling cycles and became little bit oval . Oh and me to i agree - 80's and 90's GTi cars are so much fun ! I started with Renault 5 GTT and ended addicted to Peugeot 205 GTi for years now as a daily drive , even beter was 205 1.3 Rallye slower than GTi 'on paper' but it felt faster while driving was such a fun car even little bit too much for daily car hence i prefere 1.9 GTi ;)

I was so close too buying a 205 Rallye some years ago... dirt cheap also... I regret that so much... :(

That’s a car I’d like to own… never had a hot hatch. I almost bought a Peugeot 104 S once, but I only needed a donor car for its engine & that basket case had a seized one!

If the drums have a lip on them, could that be the problem. Try getting the lip removed in a lathe. Hope this is food for thought!

If it was your own car, I would convert the drums to disc brakes from a GTi
@SeasideGarage5 ай бұрын
Yea... but that is not easy to get approved here, and COULD even cost a additional tax... (dont get me started on those rules... its crazy...)
@carcontrolcommitment5 ай бұрын
@@SeasideGarage I have a 106 Rally S2 with rear discs,. I also get 50 kg of braking force. So not sure converting would solve the problem. The rallies don't have proportioning valves as standard as they were designed for motorsport use where they'd be fitted with a proper adjustable one.
@chrisbury46355 ай бұрын
Citroen Ax's used to suffer the same issues with the rear brakes on the MOT, I've noticed the metal brake pipe on the side you were showing on camera and it looks high up and may catch on the chassis and wear through but obviously it's hard to see on screen 😊

What happened to the white visa thought that was a gti? Did it need more than welding to the subframe mounts?

Check the last few secs of the video ;) I never got it done... stil needs a MOT and minor stuff... going to start doing that soon!

The way to go then might be to change the the brake shoes and the drums next time . Have you ever driven the the Ford Puma 1.7 , they are 123 bhp weigh 1250 kg and go like stink .

About the brakes. Call it French car character....

Sounds to me that the problem is the self adjusters not working properly. Many of them don’t! Will changing the pads fix that? If not do what needs to be done to make them work correctly or accept the fact your going to have to adjust them by hand every few months.
@fhwolthuis5 ай бұрын
Factory values must be the same as MOT values? They must have some value in there to determine pass or fail?🤔
@SeasideGarage5 ай бұрын
The rules are a bit vauge... the rear brakes needs to be active.. but its actually a calculation on all 4 that matters... not sure of the actual numbers, and not sure the MOT was either.... ;)

I'm also having the same problem and it driving me crazy! Not passing MOT even after I put a new drums, shoes and cylinders on and I don't see the reason to preset the self adjuster by hand it is called self adjuster for a reason...but I gave it a chance anyway I set the adjuster so that the shoes slightly rubbed against the drum but after the first ride one drum got overheated and change the colour to brown and blue, the shoe was damaged as well😅 Did you make new pipepes by yourself just as me? Could possibly be the cause faulty flexi rubber hoses located at the rear axel?
@SeasideGarage3 ай бұрын
The flexi pibes could cause it.. but if its the same force on each wheel its unlikely to be the hoses
@oggy44183 ай бұрын
@@SeasideGarage Make sense. I'm afraid that I mess up the pipe work and that's why there is not enough preassure. I'll give it one try and set the shoes with the help of a calliper to almost match the inner diameter of the drums and see what happens😅 I love your channel by the way. Good stuff!
