For those confused: Walrider was a nanobot program that needed a human host to control it. The test host was a patient named Billy, but they lost control of it while he was the host and he destroyed the asylum. The destruction allowed all the scary homicidal inmates to escape and run rampant. Once the reporter terminated Billy's life support, the Walrider nanobots jumped to him as the new host. When they shot him as he tried to escape, the Walrider (now the reporter) destroyed the troops. As the Walrider, he will Outlast everyone else at the asylum.

yukito ko the answer to why they killed him in the end is pretty obvious, to prevent him from leaking all the secrets behind that asylum. But they still failed because Miles became the new host of the Walrider, and he also helped the protagonist in the Whistleblower to escape and to carry on what Miles failed to accomplish.

To people who don't understand what happened in the end. When Miles killed Billy, the Walrider (Nanomachine cloud, the Ghost or whatever you want to call him) became free and without a host, it then fused itself with the main character, who became the new host (which means he controls the Walrider and can use its powers at will, like Billy did). Dr.Wernicke and his guards were waiting for Miles to finish the dirty work and then kill him and destroy the evidence he collected during his stay at the asylum (the camcorder, the documents, the notes...) so that he wouldn't expose Murkoff and their experiments to the world. They realized he became the host of the Walrider AFTER they shot him (they didn't kill him), he then killed them all with his new powers and made his way to the entrance of the asylum, and helped Waylon Park escape to finish what he (Miles) couldn't do (See the ending of the DLC).

Yes, Miles may have “died”, but if you watch the DLC (Whistleblower), it’s about the guy, who originally sent Miles the mail that led Miles to MMA in the first place, and who gets to get out with Miles’/Walrider’s help. He drives off as the sun rises on his way to reveal the truth about this horrible place! :) So, in a way, Miles’ sacrifice was not entirely in vain! :)

EVERYONE who doesn't understand ending or whole thing about Walrider (or Billy if you want ( no more) ) This comment may include some spoilers from whistleblower but it will be like joining both games of outlast... So... Waylon Park (OutlastWhistleblowerCharacter) mailed Miles Upshur (OutlastOriginalCharacter) about strange things happening here so Miles came here. Military came here too way long before to kill Walrider and make a peace in there. Miles is a reporter that has been "invited" here by Park. When Murkoff noticed that Park mailed someone, he wanted to kill him, because that's what you are gonna do obviously when someone talks about secret things. It was bit too late, because Miles has arrived and he started to watch things here. After first contact with variants (those people who pursued you) he wants to escape, but it is not that easy. Park and Miles, both of them know too much information about this project formed by Nazi Scientists too much to escape. Whole project went down, when Walrider started to kill everybody. Our two heroes have never met. They both started to record things there, so they have materials to "destroy" this project. But if they want to escape, they need to kill Walrider.. What is interesting Park went from caves to the assylum and Miles went from assylum to caves. Lol... Nevermind. Billy is human in the glass ball or what it is. And he is alive just because of life support. So Miles destroys it and that's what kills Billy. When he wanted to go out, Military killed him, because he knew too much. He turns into Walrider and helps Park to escape. At the end Walrider (Miles) kills Murkoff (Boss of Park) and Park escapes on car on which Miles arrived. He can't start an engine and when he looks with a camera he sees Walrider (Miles), but he probably doesn't know that or what. Then Walrider helps him to go out and that is the end. I wanted to make a movie, but error 404 money not found. Lol. Maybe next time. WHAT IS WALRIDER? Walrider is ghost like thing, but it is, or should I use they are? o.O The Walrider is bunch (milions) of nanorobots that are barely visible, but they can be seen through the Camcorder Flashlight. Walrider needs host and its host was Billy. You had to kill him because noone could escape. You had to kill Billy, not Walrider, because Walrider is not alive. As I probably said, Billy was the man in the glass ball or something.. So you killed Billy, and Walrider stayed unactive, just finding new host. As I said, they shot you because you knew too much and they are Nazi Scientists so why not. Walrider took you as a host and you (miles) killed the military there as Billy did sometimes. Then you escaped from this place and helped Waylon Park. You pushed your (you are Miles now) in which was Park sitting through the gate and you escaped with him. So Waylon Park and Miles Upshur are both alive at the ending of Outlast...

Just FYI everyone, Miles ISN'T dead, yeah we all saw he get shot, but in case you STILL didn't notice the doctor on the chair said that Miles is now the HOST to Walrider. If the big fat guy (shown in previous episodes) was only touched by the experiments, imagine what the result would be to not only be touched, but instead CONSUMED by the thing that was giving the patients their bigger resistance and strength. Have the full power instead of just a sap is very likely to have made Miles invincible to whatever hit him afterwards, maybe even let him in control of said power...

Guys, Miles (The Main Character you play as) becomes the new Walrider. Listen to what the guy says "You have become the host." Also I'm sorry to say this but I like PewDiePie I honestly do, but this game IS really story driven through the notes you find/the notes Miles writes (You can tell when he writes one when while your using the camera, you hear a writing sound with a flashing camera logo on the bottom right). I'm not trying to "make fun of" or "diss" PewDiePie, but I think if you want a better understanding of what's going on, watch Vash12349's (I watched his walkthrough and it's A LOT more detailed/less edited) playthrough of the game, it's 17 parts long for a reason. In Pewd's walkthrough you didn't even get to learn the "fat guys" name which (If I remember correctly) is "Chris Walker." Again, I typically don't mind Pewd's playthroughs and DO find him funny, but for this game, not really. He also could have avoided A LOT of his death's if he would have just kept the camera on with Night Vision mode on while in the dark area's of the game. But anyways, this is just my two cents, aka my opinion.

I watched the entire series of Outlast played by Pewdiepie, and thoroughly enjoyed it when there are jump scares, and his singing and cursing. I laughed so hard watching this. However, I do wish he read all the confidential files. There's so much more that we don't know and the story will make it much more interesting. I guess different gamers play differently. Some players play for the story, some for the horror.

He did'nt die. If you can see 10:05-10:23, the fact that he regained his visibility again after taking a shot is because walrider is inside. After taking a few more of those shots, he fell down unconscious knowing that walrider left from his body for a moment to kill the guys. This is my theory.

This is a horrible ending because the guy u play as dies by the military. He saved everyone and then the military just go bang bang and the guy doesnt talk to the soldiers and say "im innocent" or "wait!" Because then the guy could have survived the whole experience. I wish the guy survived

Everybody here is so confused about the ending bc pewds didn't read any of the notes or the documents so you all didn't really understand the plot of the game. You should also watch markiplier or jacksepticeye's playthrough bc they played it more in detail and you will understand everything that happened :)
