Today we talk more about terminal spikes on Phalaenopsis orchids, what they are and what we should do!
▼▼▼More info below!▼▼▼
Phalaenopsis orchids normally create flower spikes on the sides of their stem, in between the leaves. Sometimes though we can find flower spikes growing from the crown of the orchid. At this point one of a few things can happen:
1. Leaves can continue to grow, if the spikes are just not capable to poke through the leaf and grow just next to the crown • Possible terminal spik...
2. The Orchid grows a spike keiki, which appears to be one of the most common outcome. After the keiki forms roots, it can be removed and potted separately • Are these Orchids dead...
3. The Orchid grows a basal keiki, just like in the first case, but this time the baby plant starts from the stem of the mother plant.
4. The Orchid produces keikis, but the keikis grow terminal spikes as well. I think this will result in the demise of the orchid in time.
5. The Orchid doesn't try to propagate and withers within a few years.
You can never know what the outcome will be, but maybe the risk is worth it :)
Try to promote keikis with hormone paste • Trying out Keiki Grow ...

Danny, I have an interesting thing happening with one of my phals....This has all happened over 4-5 months.....I got it from the grocery and put it into leca so all of the roots died. It managed to stay alive and it started to produce 2 basal keikis and what looked like a flower spike, but now its looking more like a keiki. All of a sudden the mother plant decided to grow a leaf, and then one root sprouted at the bottom in between the two keikis. I managed to keep it alive and better hydrated through the one root while it was growing all of this growth!! And then I notice a new leaf popping out between 2 leaves that was not the crown. It decided to grow ANOTHER keiki in between 2 leafs!! And THEN I noticed that after it had already grew two leaves the growth turned into a flower spike. it still only has one root that is now 2inches. LOL I'll try to upload a picture if possible.

Thank you for this video, it is just what I needed. I purchased a gorgeous Phalenopsis "Soft Clouds." It was a large plant with at least two flower spikes, and each spike had multiple branches with many small white flowers. Instead of one arch, it was covered in lots and lots of delicate flowers. When all the flowers fell, I cut the spikes. It rebloomed soon afterwards, which I was happy about, with one terminal spike. I didn't know that was a problem then. I enjoyed the flowers, and when they were gone, I cut the terminal spike back like before. Right after I cut that spike, I saw one of your videos that said I might have gotten keikis if I hadn't cut it. Next, it began creating a basal keiki, and I thought perhaps the mother plant would die, but it didn't. However, it has not grown any new leaves from the crown. Now it is in bloom again, for the third time in 7 months, with another terminal spike. The plant looks amazing - the leaves look healthy, the basal keiki looks healthy, and the flowers are beautiful. This time, I will leave the flower stem, continue my regular schedule of watering and fertilizing, and see if I get a keiki on the flower spike.

I'm a fairly new Orchid Mom, I'm on year 2. I had a wild dream of growing a Vanilla Orchid in my very warm bathroom since I'm not in a proper growing zone, I'm in California's center valley, 9b. I figured my Vanilla sproutlet needed some Orchid sister's to keep her company, so I purchased a few here & there at Home Depot and grocery stores. One recently got a keiki growing off the mother, I looked online and didn't see any keikis growing like mine; I now know from your video it was a Basil keiki. She did also have a terminal spike (I just learned what it was from your videos) out the side of the crown but not through the very top center. Well, she recently withered away. My fiance thinks I over watered, but after watching your video, I know now she probably just had bad genetics. I really wish I saw your video before we lost her. Thank you for sharing your knowledge to the internet world!!

I have a white mini-phal that has been blooming endlessly for almost a year. It had a terminal spike when I bought it but I didn't see it till getting it home. I loved the profusion of blooms and it has become my pampered baby. She now has a basal keiki and 21 blossoms on the momma plant. Each day is a learning experience with these kids. We'll see what she does next. Thank you Dani for all your wonderful lessons.

I have a phal that, after years of flowering normally, developed a terminal spike. This spike flowered beautifully, the stem eventually dried and was trimmed off. The plant itself was healthy so I continued caring for it. A lot of time passed and in June of last year I was surprised to see two basal keikis developing. They appear super healthy and now have four 'largish' leaves each and lots of vigorous roots making their way into the medium. Fingers crossed that when they mature they won't repeat the process of developing terminal spikes. After watching this video I'm a little apprehensive but remain hopeful. Time will tell!

Thank you for such a comprehensive video! "Terminal spike"...that's exactly what is happening with my very first orchid! (What luck, haha) I repotted it and it put out 2 tiny leaves, and then a flower spike formed right in the center. I had no idea what it was called but I knew it wasn't right. Keeping my fingers crossed that it was just stressed and took a shortcut, and maybe I'll be able to get a healthy keiki!

Ran across this while researching my mini. I bought her with a terminal spike, not knowing what that meant, and I also cut the spike without knowing she might make a keiki. She suffered some crown rot, but i got that cleared up, and she put out a basal keiki early last year. Within the last week, mother's very highest leaf has started to wither, though all her root and her base look greak, and the keiki is doing fine. The keiki is putting out her sixth leaf and has multiple roots, and still no sign of flower spikes. She is, however, bigger than her mother ever was, so I suppose there's hope that although she's a clone, a different aspect of her genetics will take over.

I have a white-mini-phal that has bloomed from not one, not two, but THREE terminal flower spikes as well as a spike from beneath the potting medium, bottom leaves, and quite a few roots of its roots. It is currently out of bloom for the first time since its first terminal spike, two years ago, but is already growing a new flower spike from an already used location (remains of dried flower spike and all) two leaves down. I'm continuing to care for it, and repot it, normally and have no idea what its plans for the future are but I admit I've developed a fascination with my little "mutant baby". I have pictures of the multiple terminal spikes if you are interested.

Wow finally the puzzle made a whole picture. I have this orchid which seemed slightly weak when I bought it, not too strong spikes, but rare colour. The flowers dropped quite quickly and I repotted it. It produced terminal spike soon after, and now again one next to the previous one which I cut half way. Also there is a small keiki on the side. I hope it will still produce leaves as this is my newest orchid, and when I bought it, it had spikes on the regular place, and when I saw it growing spikes (not knowing that middle spike can be fatal :-( ) I thought I did a good job and it was saved...

I just realised that one of my mini phals had a terminal spike. I purchased it like that with two spikes, did not know about terminal spikes at at point. Thanks for the informative video. Now I know what to expect. Both stems eventually faded without making a keiki after a long flowering period. My plant still looks healthy almost a year later, but has not grown more leaves from the crown. It still looks good as a green plant I think, so I will keep it and hope for a basal keiki 🌱

I bought a phal with a perfectly central spike about 3 years ago. Since then, it's grown one leaf off that terminal spike (and no further growing on that keiki), as well as 2 new air roots either side of the central spike, 4 new leaves and another new spike 1 leaf up from the (previously) central spike. It's currently growing blossoms again so it's not yet dying. It looks a bit weird, but it's currently my favourite because of that and because it's got loads of greenery and still gives me beautiful flowers :)

This is obviously late. 😊 Before I knew anything at all about orchids, I bought a Phal with a terminal spike. Without knowing what I was doing, I cut the spike once the flowers were spent. I was lucky, and a basal keiki has grown. It’s been growing for about a year and looks good. The mother plant is still growing new roots. I’ve been really nervous that the keiki will produce a terminal spike, but 🤞 that it was just a one time thing. 😬

As I see it, there are multiple options when dealing with a terminal spike. One is completely experimental and I HAVE NO IDEA if it would work, but it would involve trimming the terminal flower spike as close to the crown as possible and then applying dragon's blood or even another compound that might stimulate vegetative growth from the crown. From the cut spike I would take trim the flower section away from the inactive base nodes and enjoy them in a vase, then use flasking techniques cut the remaining length of flower stem into sections, so there was a single node to each piece and placing then in a culture medium. I know it all sounds like a lot of faffing about, but it really is just possible options.

I do have a Orchid with a terminal spike . The Orchid was given to me as a gift , well over a year ago . Did not know about ...not to cut the spike , which I cut off to the last nod ...sad . The Orchid is at this time not growing , just in the pot , still green leaves , green roots and all ,lol. I really want to take it from the pot and check the roots that are there , just haven't , I am afraid if I do ...then it will surly die . So for now I just water it , feed it ...treat it as if nothing is wrong , don't know how long that will last . I check it every day , mist it , along with my other Orchid . So for now , it is there and I am waiting to see what will happen .

Hi there, just wanted to let you know, same thing happened to me. I was so mesmerized by a beautiful pastel phal in the grocery store with 5 spikes, that I didn't even notice that one of the spikes came from the center of the plant. Back then, I used to cut spikes way back (I don't anymore). In any case, it took quite awhile, but 2 basal keikis formed, but only 1 has grown quickly, other one didn't make it. Believe it or not, the mother plant still looks the same, not even losing a leaf. If you have the patience, I think you will get basal keikis. Good luck!

The keiki with the terminal spike, the spike looks a bit like what could be a keiki on my latest purchased orchid. In my case it's not the case of a central/terminal flower spike on the mother orchid. It looks more like a case of a 6th flower spike that sort of changed its mind and started to produce leaves. I got it because I was curious, so I'll see what it does with it, it may be a funky keiki, it may be a dud as I'm not sure if it's still growing or will even continue to grow but the mother plant is healthy and doing well so far. I've had her and the potential keiki for 3 days, so it's still too early to conclude anything. 🥰 My other 2020 keiki is doing great, growing bigger every day.

It is very healthy 5 mths later and growing what seems to be a larger Basal keiki and smaller new crown. Waiting for roots to determine crown or keikis. It had unbelievable amount of spikes when purchased , my theory some type of hormone tx was used by grower. Very interesting phal. Would like to send pic.

I accidentally bought a phal with terminal spike without knowing what it is. My question is, should I repot it after it drops its blooms if I am interested in continuing to care for it to see if it will grow keikis? When I purchased it it is in bark with what I think is compacted coconut husk in the middle, roots system looks good.

My mother has an orchid with a terminal spike and a keike.. Very interesting as I've never seen this combination in person. But her terminal spike has a leaf sprouting at the top and an opening where a stick is poking out of it (as if the "spike" itself is actually an extention of the leaf and the leaf is wrapping itself around this stick, appearing as a spike with a stick coming out of a hole in the middle of it)! Could it be that the terminal spike is dried up inside the leaf and what we are seeing is the leaf that has grown straight and vertical? Maybe the leaf and spike began growth at the same time and got confused? I've searched the internet and can't find anything that looks like what is happening to my mother's plant 🤯 If you have any knowledge on this I'd be ever so grateful to hear your opinion!

I didn't cut the old spike, so it woke up one of the buds and is growing a secondary flower spike, I can see buds forming on it. I wonder if I should cut the spike to have the orchid put more energy into the keiki, or let it bloom?

I just switched it back to water culture an hour ago...wondering if water culture should only be at night? Also today is first time letting stem touch water versus just the 2 iffy long roots. she's in a south east facing window ..more so east with a big tree near my window..maybe 1 -2 hours direct yellow sunlight..(wondering if she misses the corner where i now house a pink silk anthurium:)...shes got some weird new growth where the bottom leaves fell off..any advice? Some people recommend cutting the flower spike and planting it into moss -- supposedly, it triggers keiki-spawning much more effectively than leaving the spike attached to the plant. I'm inclined to say that it's the plant just confusing what it is supposed to grow where, too -- especially looking at how there are often small leaves attached to the base of the terminal spike. (The leaf growth node transforms into spike growth node.) A hormonal imbalance, perhaps. Which might explain why they're more common in store plants which have been "encouraged".

Hi Danny. Sometimes I wonder if "manufacturers" intentionally try to breed plants that have certain anomalies, sometimes for special effects like your singalo and sometimes for profit. It would be to the benefit of manufacturer if they'd sell you a plant at least once or twice a year and produce plants that won't survive years and years. Have to make room for the newer models of course. Sorry to sound so cynical.

I work in a grocery store in the floral department where we sell different sized phalaenopsis orchids, and about 70% of the time we get in terminal spiked mini phal, and very rarely do we receive full sized orchids with terminal spikes!! I would agree with you on this, as this particular company we purchase from includes on their care instructions to SPECIFICALLY water the orchids with ice 😑 They can't make their money if everyone is keeping their orchids alive!

Excalibur Pie In America we got a taste of this when car makers were designing based on looks and functionality only. But the cars had a built in absolecence to it. In other words were built to be problematic after a couple of years of use. I worked on cars before and seeing the wiring designed to handle less electricity than it was actually using meant switches and instruments would burn out prematurely, and I was constantly replacing parts. Oh gosh I got one of those phals and though it didn’t have a terminal spike didn’t survive either. For no reason at all the stem rotted.
